Great player, but I'm having second thoughts with Kroos, especially if he were to be partnered with Carrick next season. We need to add some dynamism.
The thought of Carrick and Kroos as a midfield two scares me, that would be so slow and static. I'd genuinely rather see Cleverley and Kroos, Cleverley at least provides some energy.

People keep saying this, but do people forget our most successful team of recent years was a midfield partnership of Scholes and Carrick?. Dynamism is great and everything, but if you can have players who work the ball correctly, and are tactically clever enough to get back into shape quickly it won't be a problem.

Sure those as a pair are hardly "dynamic", but I would certainly have no worries against 3/4 of the league.

We might have an agreement with Kroos lined up which isn't too far fetched IMHO, but Bayern is a completely different matter. They won't sell, I bet they'd rather play hard-ball and let him go on a free next year. They don't need the money at all. This is not happening.

That Scholes-Carrick partnership also had a monster defense behind them, tbf.

Not so sure on that. Maybe they arent in need of the transfer fee but its going to be difficult for them to turn down 40 million on the basis of one year. They have sufficient quality that I don't think losing him will have that major a detrimental effect. Wouldn't suprise me if they were happy to let him go for Pep to bring in Fabregas. Obviously whether it is us that signs Kroos is an entirely different matter

The thing is when we had Scholes and Carrick, we also had Ronaldo, Nani and a much more agile Giggs as our attackers. We had pace. Now we have Rooney, Mata, Kagawa and RVP. All very good players but none of them very pacy.

If we are going to stick with our attackers then we need to sign more dynamic midfielders.

Jesus me pants are ruined, cocks out, this will happen! #believe

Based solely on his appearance, I think it is safe to assume he would have been a Nazi officer had he been born roughly a hundred years ago.

That's right. Because all Germans used to be Nazis eh?

Any chance that, in the year 2014, folk can start differentiating between the two?

Finally, welcome to the party sparks

I'm a bit late to get going this year but I'm here now and ready to f.a.p to potential transfers.

Now that Steve round is gone who will be looking after the helipad at carrington?

If we are going to keep Mata we need a solid midfield behind him, especially with our questionable defence. Theres no doubting he's a brilliant player, that doesn't mean he's what United need. I just feel as well, when we have so many slow players as it is this could be a poor signing, especially if we fail to get anyone else in the summer for CM. Him and Carrick/Fellaini would get ripped apart by the top teams. We would really need Van Gaal to bring Cleverly on sharpish if that were to happen.

In short I'd be happy if this were the second CM signing we made rather than the first.

Ive said this a few times, but pep and fabregas were not the best of friends. There is no way he will be going to Bayern....that much is certain.

Rumour is Phil Neville is holding vigil over it with a mop and bucket as we speak.

Nev is normally a top hat but he is right on this occasion. Carrick has been poor for a few seasons now. Not one assist this past season

Carrick definitely wasn't poor in 12/13 when we won the league. Outside of RVP, he was arguably our best and most consistent player. He was very good the season before as well.

He wasn't poor the season before last which I think was the point being made. He was players player of the year and in the PFA team of the year.

He's 33 though, and was never that pacy. He should be used in a limited role this year hopefully.

And in my opinion, Carrick has had an awful season this year almost entirely due to his midfield partner. We always knew he wasn't the kind of player to grab a game by the scruff of it's neck or by making surging runs. But last season he was partnered alongside more athletic and mobile partners, Jones and Cleverley, whereas this season it's been mostly Fellaini or a shell shocked Cleverley. For me that highlights the importance of a balanced CM partnership.

Heh. With all our midfield woes I guess we can only dream of fielding the CM pairing from the team of the year in the season before last.

Oh wait...
To be fair Mata isn't really a central midfielder, put him in a midfield two and he'll struggle - they put him there because he was excellent that season and obviously they couldn't neglect Bale from the flank.

Mind you he's still going to be a creative force in a midfield three.

I know. Was just being flippant.

Mind you, with the form they both showed when that team was picked I reckon most people on here would have been delighted at the thought of the two of them lining up in midfield for United.

I really hope this happens but it just wouldn't make any sense for Bayern to let him go when he will likely stay if given the money he thinks he deserves. Now Bayern obviously think it's too much and are considerate of their wage structure but ultimately Kroos is one of their top players so can command the fee and they won't want to look weak letting one of their stars leave.

If they do choose to cash in then great cos it looks like we're happy to pay what it takes to get him but in reality I'll be very surprised if they don't negotiate a salary he's happy with and he stays put unfortunately. Kroos gets plenty of game time and has been there years so unless he is really unhappy and serious about his wage demands I just can't see him leaving his home country to join us but you never know. Not many of us thought we would end up signing van Persie and Mata though so it could happen!
Can't really disagree with any of that but there is a slim chance that now he knows what we are willing to pay him, not only us but Chelsea/City/Madrid, he will dig in more and the chances of a compromise will decrease . He could see out his contract and then come here where he will make a fortune and have a role as our midfield general as opposed to being one of the superstars in a star studded team .

I suspect United would pay him a lot more than Bayern would - and if you believe the papers, the figures being offered a ridiculous on account of the fact that we are desperate to sign top quality players and will pay a premium.

He may have been fliritng with other sides to get a pay rise, but if we have offered £200k a week (or whatever is being quoted) then that is a game changer. He is then in a position hwere in terms of his long term financial future he may not be able to turn that down. As it is, he finds himself in a good position - if he stays he can leave on a free next year and pick up huge wages anyway.

If Bayern will not pay him what other clubs can he may have made the decision to move. Fair play if they dig their heels in - but if its set in stone that he's off, then a sizeable big makes them think carefully about their position.

Indeed. If Carrick can recover at least some of his top form and we have Mata playing at his best (which he has been very near during his time here) then another good midfielder and a back-up would make it a very, very good midfield indeed. I think even Fellaini has a role to play.

Kroos would be a good signing IMO but there are other players we may or may not get that could be near his level. If we don't sign him it won't be the end of the world, I bet van Gaal has other targets on his mind too.

Absolutely! A big man like that can carry a lot of balls & cones.

He isn't THAT awful. Must be doing something right to play for Belgium, not like they have a shortage of midfield talent.

I guess you haven't watched him this year in United shirt. Playing for Belguim and United are two completely different things. If we get Kroos, hopefully, we need a DM next to him. With Carrick, Fletcher as a backup, I can't see much playing time for Fellaini...

To be fair, a whole load of our players looked crap this season. He deserves at least half a season more to show his worth here.

There are 2 main differences between him in a Utd shirt and Belgium shirt though, his manager and his teammates. I think its very unfair to judge any Utd player on their performance under tactical Dave.

Fixed that for ya.
