We are so desperate in midfield that wages of 200k plus are absolutely justifiable for a world class 24 year old. If we could pull it off it would surely be one of our greatest ever signings. I definitely think he will leave but not sure it'll be to United.

mata was different though because Chelsea weren't playing him (Kroos has played most Bayern games), Mourinho didn't want him (Pep has repeatedly said he wants to keep Kroos), it's a world cup year etc. If it really comes down to it and Bayern offer Kroos the big new contract he wants, we can't get him, simple as that.

Sure. Whats the harm in trying though? It is not impossible that he wont receive a satisfactory offer from Munich. Combine with an extremely generous offer from England, the chance to play in a new Leauge, the fact hes already got Bundesliga and Champions League medal as well the fact that his Agent/managment would be encouraging such a move as they themselves would receive a much better payout.

It's an insane amount. Don't think it will be a flat wage though. Will definitely come with a lot of riders. If he helps us win trophies then no one would really care and it would be well worth it. Do we think Yaya's salary is justified?

Do we know the salaries of other top midfielders in Europe?

Sorry, perhaps I'm not being clear.

I agree we need to go for the upper echelon of midfielders, nae doubt abewt tha', the problem I have is that he is just going for really, really obvious targets. I mean Fabregas last summer was an utterly pointless pursuit especially as we apparently didn't even approach Thiago, supposedly because Moyes was worried about him settling in here due to his age (madness), it was as if he went "err, who's the best midfielder out there, Ed? Go for him!" Now we appear to be doing the exact same thing, like Vidal (unattainable) and Kroos (longshot). I want us to get top midfielders but we need a bit of realism here too, we don't want a repeat of last summer, go all out for the best possible players, fail miserably and end up having to get a very mediocre backup.

I have always been of the view that just getting a couple of competent midfielders in, while also chasing the Hollywood superstar would be our best bet.

It seems guaranteeing an upgrade and broadening our strength in depth is seen as worse than gambling everything on one target.

Any decent midfielders from any of the top half teams of the top 6 leagues around Europe are better than what we have, its not as if we are in a position where the majority of transfers will be side grades or incremental improvements.

Barring the glaring steaming turd in the room that is Fellaini, there was literally nobody he could of purchased using that criteria that wouldn't of improved us.

No harm in trying, my point is that it better not be another Fabregas situation, we have to have other targets lined up too, more attainable ones.

I agree. Hes only really made that one cock up though. If a trend stars occurs where by we go for top players and end up with expensive average players Ill be worried too. Its not like hes gone public with his interest in Kroos ala Fabregas though. Have to wait and see how it pans out I guess.

Moyes is being blamed for destroying our wage structure?:lol::lol:
Yep hilarious. Lets stick to a wage structure a la Arsenal and see where it gets us. This idea that United can operate in some sort of a vacuum outside and distinct from where all other clubs do their business is non sensical.

If we're offering £260k a week we can afford to. The Glazers might know nowt about football but they sure as hell know plenty about money and if they are prepared to sanction this then thye can fire away as far as I'm concerned.

Even we do sign him, we better not fecking play him in a two man midfield besides Fellaini or Carrick.

I don't mind us paying 260k/week if we are going to sign player like Kroos.we certainly need someone the middle of the park to dictate the play. But the team we are dealing is well know in transfer of their own players,if they are not comfortable in selling we are not getting him eventhough player wish to move.
Instead he can wait for his contract to expire at 2015 and move on from there if he really wish to move by that time,In between lot can happen player might change his mind to stay back, his club may agree to pay wages at par with other top players in the club.Fingers crossed.

Arsenal have one of the biggest wage bills around.

This. In recent times many of us have whined that we don't pay up top wages and agent fees. Now that we are at least looking at paying what needs to be paid, people are whining about wage structures being destroyed?

Welcome up buddy :)

United were serial winners because of Fergie, so I do not understand why would you separate him from the pulling power. RvP knew that with Fergie in charge, United will be there or thereabouts and thus he chose us.
So what top class players joined us in the last few years because of Fergie's pulling power?

I think you might find it's not actually Moyes who negotiates wages with the players and agents.

Nope. And it is also true that Moyes didn't sign Fellaini's transfer or contract, still doesn't mean that he is not to blame 1st for buying him, 2nd for paying over the odds and 3rd to offering him that much (as he knew very well what Fellaini was on at Everton and what he would cost us).

It's completely different not paying 6 million more ONCE to buy Hazard (we should have paid that amount) or actually paying 260 k per week to a 24 year old, that's around 14 mill per year. Even City and Chelsea don't have a player on that wages.

How many world class players did Fergie go after the last few years? He went after RvP and he got him.

For the reported transfer fee and wages, a little more imagination might allow us to purchase 2 young and talented midfielders instead of one, arguable world-class (I dont think he is personally) in Kroos.

The fee and the wages are barmy if true.

But but Moyes' modern and innovative scouting methods only tell us about Kroos, Gundogan, Mata, Fabregas and Everton players!

And in your opinion who are these "2 young and talented midfielders" that we should buy? You do know that Kroos is only 24? He is almost the finished article at 24 and can only get better. He is exactly what we need in midfield - someone who can take over a game. We need to lift with the club and induce some energy into the squad with a world class signing and signing Kroos definitely sends a message.

Sorry thats my point and the sarcasm wasn't obvious. But Arsenal have historically attempted to stick to a wage structure that whilst balancing the books has also contributed largely to them being without silverware for so long.

This idea of "wage structure" is fine so long as you realise that there is a market at work and that if that market decrees you have to pay £250k a week to get the best and you don't beacuse it doesn't fit the "structure" then, well, you won't be competing for the best.

We don't know.

So you cannot confirm. With Moyes we already know about Fabregas. Anyway, I don't believe in this "X player won't want to play for Moyes". Ultimately it will all boil down to how much we offer. That is the whole truth.

Spot on. And we're already paying Wayne Rooney more than this anyway. Hardly "shattering" the budget.

Indeed. Players know managers may not be around for ever and they'll follow the money to a large extent.

Its the reason City have Aguero and Toure. Those players are earning massive money - but also know that big money means better players and therefore a chance of success.

Can someone who watches Kroos regularly tell me just why he would be perfect for United? This post doesn't have a hidden agenda I am just interested as to why we need to go all out for him and where he would fit in with our rebuild.

He wouldn't even be a perfect fit, he is very good, but he is no Vidal. And I really hope Moyes knows WHERE and HOW to play him instead of just buying him because he is a goalscoring midfielder.

Well, to be fair, Moyes isn't doing it but the wage structure will have to change with him in charge. How many great players are going to want to play for him with no European football otherwise?

With Fergie, the club could get away with paying lower wages because there would be obvious bonuses, trophies, and the Champions League.

He is a midfielder who can do everything, really. He's pretty good on the ball, he has phenomenal shooting technique, and is probably the best passer on the ball around, apart from the old guard in Xavi/Pirlo etc... He's also pretty big and can actually defend, contrary to popular belief. The only issue is of course is that he's pretty much a complementary midfielder. If he's the Yin, he needs the Yang. Somebody with the industrial work who is capable to sweep up, or an anchor behind him to keep a defensive screen. It'd be folly to sign Kroos and try get him to fix our midfield in its current scenario. More work must be done, but if it is, it'd be one phenomenal midfield.

How many managers are there like that? All of the top managers want the best players in their side and its no coincidence that the clubs with the best players usually win the trophies at the end of the season.

Klopp, Mourinho or whomever else would want to be backed in the transfer market to give themselves as a good a chance of success as possible. There's nothing wrong with that.

At what price is the question though? Kroos with a 40m transfer fee and a 5 year 260k per week contract, would make this a 100m+ transfer all in all. Look at Mourinho or Klopp. Klopp manages to have one of the best sides in Europe with a squad that earns less than the freaking Spurs. Mourinho splashed some money but also made some very good transfers like Khedira or Özil at Real Madrid or Matic at Chelsea in recent years.

I want the best players in the world, no doubt about that. But only for a price that is somehow justified and not too risky. We've never been the club that buys alot of world class players. Moyes has already bought the same number as SAF (Mata and Veron) Do you think it was a wise choice to back Moyes with Fellaini? No, not because he was a terrible player at Everton, but his desperation made him overpay severly. Same could happen again and I don't want that too happen. 40m+ bid for Khedira. Insane.

Btw. 2 of the best teams in Europe cost a fraction of the other sides. Atletico is leading La Liga with what was considered alot of no names before this season. Dortmund just beaten Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. The best managers want to get backed in the transfer market, but they also have a plan B and don't need as much money as Moyes would need.

Irrespective of whether Moyes leave/stay then the only way to attract the best players is to pay this kind of salary. We can always settle with the likes of Young and Fellaini though, all rumoured to be on 120k a week
