Manchester United's Toni Kroos transfer chase means a Munich sleepover for Woodward

Manchester United supremo Ed Woodward will stay in Germany overnight in a bid to thrash out a deal for Bayern Munich star Toni Kroos.

Woodward wants straight answers from the midfielder, who helped Bayern knock United out of the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Kroos is David Moyes’ top target and would take up the biggest slice of the Reds'summer transfer budget.

The Old Trafford executive vice-chairman is keen to know if Kroos is as committed to the potential move as reports from earlier this week suggest.

United do not intend to be used in any attempt by the Kroos camp to squeeze a bumper pay-rise out of Bayern.

Woodward will try to convince the European Cup holders that United’s £40million offer - a blockbusting bid first revealed by MirrorSport last week - is enough.

He knows that United face a whirlwind amount of buying and selling in the coming months, but Kroos is key to that strategy.

If he joins, other players can be sold. If he is not landed, United will have to look elsewhere.

I know it's the Mirror but it's on like donkey kong!

He will ask for us to double his pay in order for him to suffer the horrendous football tactics he will have to be part of next season.

When did his agent change from this:

To this:

His "agent" I'd most likely a company dealing with players contracts. Not the single person you imagine who wrangler himself into a players life and has now manipulated himself into a position of power.

I dont believe there's even a slight chance we'll sign him as he wants a payday and either Bayern will cave, or another team will offer more money. I'd take Kramer and Geiss as consolation prizes though

The Bayern fans I spoke to last night wouldn't be upset if he left and think Bayern are simply trying to drive up his price before an eventual transfer.

I heard his performance last night on my way home on the u-bahn described as a "katastroph" by many of their fans.

From watching him over the two legs, does anyone else think he looks very slow and immobile, almost carrick like. His ability on the ball is great but he doesn't strike me as someone who'd take the game by the neck when the going gets tough which is what we need from out midfielders.

to be fair: playing him as the DM in a rather awkward 2-3-3-2 shouldnt be the benchmark. He isn´t a fan favorite, but the club doesnt care if he is loved by the fans or not and I doubt that he cares about that; he is pretty unemotional. Slow and immobile is more or less true so. I still think that he is best as attacking midfielder, but I guess I am the only one who thinks so.

We need a Lucas Moura type more urgently, in my opinon. An energizer. Kroos is not such a player, although he's certainly a player I wouldn't mind seeing in our midfield if he had a Moura type next to him. Basically Kroos is better than what we have, perhaps bar Carrick for his defensive work.

Moura is a wide player, not a cm.

I don't get the hatred from the fans towards him, makes not the slightest bit of sense. Thought he did a wonderful job as a holding midfielder for a supposedly lazy and slow AM, who often doesn't care about defending. I've no clue what people expected him to do in the role he played yesterday.

He has always been a wide man!

He played centrally for Sao Paulo more often than not but it was more of a Number 10 style role than a centre mid. He's certainly not the answer to our midfield troubles but he'd answer a lot of questions on the wing.

For all the talk of media rubbish regarding his transfer, he does seem to be burning bridges at Bayern. I thought he was fantastic over the 2 legs, only disappointing aspect was his shooting IMO as he is capable of the spectacular on a regular basis. Ran both games, makes you wonder why it's taken 24 years to find his position as a deep lying playmaker.

Don't think he's burning bridges at all. He hasn't said or done anything wrong, not moaned when he was played in more defensive positions and fulfilled his tactical roles perfectly. He wants more money, that's it. If we can't agree on a deal, that will be the main reason, imo.

Also:
I actually believe his defensive contribution is underrated while his goalscoring is signficantly overrated.
Yesterday kinda proved the point I made 2 days ago.

He certainly wasn't fantastic in either of the two legs, neither do I think he was bad. Generally though unless we get walloped by a team I tend not to notice how well the opposition players play as much.

Yea I'm the same. Thought he was absolutely brilliant against Arsenal in the first leg of their tie though.

His defensive contribution is definitely underrated. He is very good in disrupting the build up and he knows when its necessary to stop his opponent.
The main reason why people think he is lazy/bad is, because his style is unspectacular and he doesn't really excel against bad sides, which is pretty weird.

Definitely, his goal was fantastic and the ball to Robben for the penalty and red card was sublime. He completely ran that game.

Maybe not with you, but seemingly with other Bayern fans. His agent seems to be adding fuel to the fire at times and the lack of any sort of denial must be frustrating. Then the little strops after substitutions. Small things that might only annoy a minority, but still become a cumulative annoyance.

And fair point regarding his goal scoring ability. You've obviously seen him more than me but I feel he's a scorer of spectacular goals, but obviously not a spectacular goal scorer as he doesn't get in the box much and the deeper he plays the less long shot opportunities he has. I've always thought his defensive work was decent.

His mobility, whilst not speed demon like, is still better than all our other options in CM, and he's clearly much more comfortable on the ball than all of them too. People forget that Carrick is the wrong side of 30, we need someone who can keep our play ticking over. Football isn't all about "taking the game by the scruff of the neck". I think sometimes fans overvalue those who are "flashy" and forget about the metronomes who keep the play moving along and dictates the speed of play. I mean, Scholes in his later years was more immobile than Carrick is now, but still ran games simply through his passing, knowing when to go short, when to go long, when to switch player similar to how Xavi was for Barca. It's like the England setup, everyone always wants the "all action player", but in reality what they really need is someone who can actually set the rhythm for the whole team.

He would be a massive asset, especially if we got a faster midfielder beside him like Carvalho.

I don't really think any of the Bayern players except Robben looked partiularly dangerous or exciting. They are a very pragmatic team and Kroos is key to that style of play. He is quite metronomic and dictates the pace of play, ideally suited to Moyes' style actually. If we do get him we will definately need some mobility alongside him though, a powerhouse Toure type.

Am I the only one that was rather underwhelmed with this lad over the two legs?....It also worries me that Bayern fans don't seem that bothered about him going.

Yet, we're supposedly going to pay £40 million plus £200,000 odd in wages. Are we being robbed blind (again)?

There isnt another player like him in the PL the only other one in recent times is Paul Scholes. So yes the fee is very much worth it.

I'm with you there .Never really saw what the fuss was about over both legs. But then again i don't watch the Bundesliga so some on here may have a better idea.

He was devastating against Arsenal. The way we set up against Bayern was quite successful at nullifying a lot of their strengths. Kroos is fantastic and would be amazing at United.

I too wasn't really blown away by his performances against us. I was a bit unsure of exactly how good I thought he was anyway, but I'm none the wiser after the two legs.

I can see he's got a good range of passing and a goal threat, but as far as comparisons with Scholes go, he was so much more than that. Perhaps in timw he'll turn into a real top class midfielder, but at the moment I'm leaning towards Koke as my preferred midfield acquisition.

Koke is having one great season and people are going into raptures about him;Kroos has been a consistently great midfielder for a couple of seasons now.

PS: Koke isn't going to leave AM for us
