Tom Cleverley | 2012-14 Performances

He proved to any doubters that he is a true United player that can be a first choice player. Brilliant performance and inches away from the goal of the season. He's a class act.

Big mistake but played well with the ball. Surprised he only made 1 tackle in the match though, this season he's contributed well in that area in general.

Another second half, another disappearing act. Needs to improve on this.

I wonder if he has durability issues. He seems to fade in most games that he plays. Don't get me wrong, he has usually been very good before he fades, but he does fade nonetheless.

He was very lazy with his passing in our half in the second. I could've chinned him after their goal, and a couple of passes right after it that belied that he hadn't learnt his lesson.

Great in the first though. Him, Kagawa and Welbeck seem to be on the same wavelength with the short passing game. If that can gel into a real understanding, Shinji can bulk up a bit and Welbeck can avoid tripping over himself, we could play some really great football this year.

Yes, Clev's carelessness was infuriating. But every single member of the team bar perhaps Kagawa seemed to forget how to pass the ball and keep it under pressure, something we had no problem with in the first half. It's fecking weird and I'm convinced it's a mental issue, it's complacency or something.

Thought Fergie missed a trick by not subbing him off and bringing Anderson in the last half hour or so. Before that he was good.

Him and Carrick have now played at Arsenal and Liverpool(at home) and Chelsea and City(away) and have won all the four matches. That's very promising.

Good point.

The experience he's gaining coming through these games victorious is huge, especially where Europe is concerned.

It's really nice to see that Fergie seems to trust him in these big games, yeah. Gives me hope that he doesn't plan to start Scholes at the Bernabeu.

Another good performance from his, he was guilty of a few risky passes and certainly was at fault for their goal, but still another good game and these things will help him improve. You can see he knows he made a mistake as he holds his hands up, so hopefully he won't do it again.

Same as Anderson tbh. Great 60 or so mins then runs out of gas. I'll take those 60 anytime though, but he needed to be replaced I thought.

Carrick's performance deteriorated more than Tom's, I thought. Although like the entire team, he did either deliberately sit off more or get bizarrely lazy and complacent after the first hour. And of course that pass was so casual it had me fuming. A couple of times in our half he had space and options in front of him, and yet decided to pass back to a FB or CB under pressure, which was odd. As if he assumes that the back-pass is the safer one by default.

But as I said, I think in general other people's performances slackened worse than his did. And... that volley.

Really dawned on me today that he no longer looks like a 'young player' any more. yes, he is still not perfect, nut he is growing in confidence and authority. This has been my main criticism of him before. A few months ago he would probably not have tried that volley, he would have tried to pass responsibility along, and if he was left with no choice but to shoot, it would have been a shy, scuffed one. Hit the ball with more conviction there than I've ever seen him hit a ball in a United shirt before.

Well but Carrick played almost every game for us this season and this is the first time for a period of really great performances that he looked tired.
Clev seems to tire at the 70th minute in almost every game. That's what I meant he's a bit like Ando. More like a general thing I noticed than criticism of his performance today.
He really had a brilliant first half it has to be said. But his bad positioning in the second showed that he was quite tired imo.

There was no great performance from Cleverley today...first half he and Carrick had the freedom of Old Trafford and his attributes were flexed with confidence. Second half as soon as a little pressure was applied he became sloppy and complacent. It was the same against Chelsea and City. He is developing into a fine player but he still needs to work on tracking his runners from midfield and also his general defensive positioning. Time and again second half Suarez, Sturridge and even Borini popped up in space behind him and in front of the defence.

Against Real Madrid it will be Ozil, De Maria and Ronaldo dropping into the space...no let off with them.

To be fair people have been criticising him in recent weeks for not playing enough risky passes.

I'm glad we've got Anderson back just to give Cleverley a little kick up the arse. It's a common theme that his influences wanes after the 70th min mark (not saying he's utterly garbage...don't shoot me).

But for the most part, his link up is top notch. He's got the brain we need in midfield.

Yep. It's been apparent for some time now. It's mental Carrick is our only real CM who has some solid positional discipline.

Interestingly enough, Anderson suffers from the exact same problem. And there is a common factor with both of them - watch them in the first half of games, both are constantly harrying & pressing. Obviously as fatigue sets in, more mistakes creep into their games.

Think both need to learn to pace themselves a bit better. It is near on impossible to maintain that sort of a pressing game for 90 minutes, unless you have the whole team pressing(which we do not!).

I'm only hard on him because its obvious he is a real talent, his ability on the ball and his awareness in possession are terrific. He just needs to get to grips with the all round discipline required of a central midfielder in a Ferguson side. I always try and remember he is fairly new to the position at the highest level. Not comparing like for like but as an example Xavi has been a regular in Barca's engine room since he was 18. Tom has to learn quickly but his progression this season has been a real positive.

He will relish the games against Real Madrid, he's got to express himself while knowing when to maintain discipline. He shouldn't try too hard to impress himself on the game, that is when you can lose focus on the responsibilities you have.

Think he's done quite well in that aspect. He keeps it simple making sure we keep possession while occasionally attempting a risky pass.

What's certainly clear from the game yesterday at least is that Cleverley is a much better player than "the Welsh Xavi".

I'm happy that he took a few risks yesterday, even if some of them didn't come off. At least he's trying to be more on the edge and he'll only improve at mastering that side of his game from here.

People were giving out a few weeks ago that he wasn't taking enough risks, now he's getting stick for it.

Yeah but I think that's from a creative point of view, which tbf he has started to express himself more, I meant defensively where I think he, evra and kagawa were a bit guilty of trying to pass it out of tough situations too much.

Cleverley was only really guilty of that once IMO, but it was costly. Don't really think Kagawa over played it either, it was Carrick that played a few odd ones.

Dunno, Kagawa def too a few risks trying to turn away from trouble in our half, plus def remember clev playing a blind ball over his head to evra which just about got their. Carrick started playing a few questionable passes but don't think they were as risky as some of the others.

All in all it was a team thing, suarez dropped in to the hole and with us using welbeck and rvp higher up the pitch we started to get outnumbered, probs should have moved kagawa inside and welbeck wider earlier.

Yeh he has done well in determining when he simply needs to keep play ticking over, and when to be more forceful. Its difficult to strike the right balance but he has the nous to achieve it. I've noticed recently he has definitely become more ambitious in his distribution. He is looking beyond the little give and go's and picking passes into the forward line and space beyond midfield. We all know he can be intricate in tight spaces, but he can also pick passes from deeper and its pleasing to see him mix it up.

I respectfully disagree.

It's possibly undersold by the fact that the lad singing is either a few too many down the line, or doesn't know the words.

Forget the guy singing it. It's catchy at least!

We need a few new songs and I've heard a lot worse than this one. (again the singing is no doubt awful)

Is it? I'd say the words are too awkwardly crammed in for it to be catchy. I'm not saying a good chant has to be strictly metrical or anything but dodgy rhythm and cheesy lines doesn't do much for me.

Yeah the words are awkwardly crammed, but if sung right(not by drunken, tone deff singers) it has a slight bit of potential IMO. The words could also do with adjustment.

The lyrics sound like they're from a Japanese anime cartoon or something.

"He's not very old but watch him go, fighting against the enemy"...
