I agree, I don't get this #10 thing at all really. Compare him to Kagawa or Rooney and you see the difference in what a #10 should be. I think right now he's been used where he should be, in the middle of the park, with a bit more freedom because Carrick is there, so that he can get forward and score some goals, play one-twos and help make things tick.

Incidentally, when Anderson is back and (when pigs fly) fully fit, would people rather see the two of them together again, or do we all agree that Carrick - Cleverley is the best midfield pairing we have?

For me there's no doubt Carrick - Cleverley is our best and certainly most consistent combination. Cleverley has shown more this season and while we know Anderson is capable of great things, we can't count on him. Cleverley's progress over the past year and a half is evident, and he's still improving. I really don't know where Anderson is in his development right now.

Further than Cleverley. But, as you say, he's not dependable because of his injury concerns, but he is still the better player.

He's a great player IMO. I'm aware that he was at one stage overrated during last season, but now I think that he's being underrated. His impact on our midfield this season has been huge, especially in some of the bigger games. Not many players can handle/frustrate Yaya Toure the way he did.

Anderson still has a bucket-load to prove IMO, in terms of consistency and staying fit.

He's awesome.

Lucky to have a player like him coming from the youth team.

Yet another poster overrating him. Its only a matter of time before he gets called Man Utd's Mikael Arteta...

...Forgive my sarcasm. Sorry couldn't resist. The lad is constantly taking unjust criticism when he's developing into a brilliant little midfield maestro. Thought I'd use your post to illustrate that for all those who fail to see it themselves.

I think you lot are confusing him with Carrick today.

No I think you aren't watching the match. He's been very good. His energy and closing down is very vital to how Carrick plays.

Amazing linkups with Kagawa. Clearly Shinji is more than comfortable in that left wing position as long as he has Cleverley close by.

Carrick has been great too.

Carrick has been immense and as a result is making Cleverley look better out there. Cleverley has gotten some crazy praise on here lately when in reality it's Carrick who has been putting in amazing performances and Cleverley who has been playing pretty well alongside him.

Does so much off the ball and keeps us ticking over, his energy's one of the reasons why Carrick's been so good this season.

Cleverley is one of the least criticised players on the forum.

That's such rubbish. Carrick has been getting heaps of praise lately and for good reason. You're making it sound like Cleverley is getting all the attention. It's just that Cleverley has been excellent as well, and rather than saying one makes the other look good, how about we just say they work well together? They're both our players, they work great as a team and that's fantastic. The feck's wrong with some of you lot.

He's been good, but not great, not "Paul's heir" great, that's for sure.

If Scholes had been playing today he would have played in either Kagawa's or Carrick's role (well kinda with Kagawa).

He's been great in the link up.

Carrick has been the better of the two but that doesn't mean Cleverley hasn't done very well. It's no coincidence that Carrick started playing extremely well when he began being consistently paired with Cleverley.

Both Carrick and Cleverly have been excellent in their own right. Why does only one of them have to get maximum praise?

Sigh, never said he wasn't. Never said they didn't work well together (the opposite actually)

I don't think Cleverley has been that good, not good enough to receive some of the labels here. Carrick has been way better.

Cleverley is clearly talented and has it in him but he doesn't impose himself on games enough, bar the volley, he hasn't done an awful lot. Carrick has been our midfield maestro both defensively and offensively so far.

He is demonstrating to Gerrard how to play football.

Cleverley has been really good today. His possession play and speed of thought in tight situations is quality.

I agree in general but I don't think you can say he hasn't imposed himself today. He played a key role in our goal, he's made the second most passes in the game (2 less than Carrick), he's worked extremely hard defensively and he's been a constant option for Welbeck and Kagawa driving the team forward.

He's played well for sure (just not great, like some have said) but whenever I see Cleverley play I always get the impression he can do more, cause the talent is of course there. I dunno, maybe the fact that Carrick is playing so good right now is limiting him a little, sort of like how Scholes use to limit Carrick a bit?

I know what you mean but I don't see it. Maybe he's doing a bit too much running to try and create options for Carrick constantly and he's tiring himself out but other than that I think they're gelling really well and Carrick's bringing the best out of him.

You're leaning towards that little bit of magic, the amazing pass out of nothing.

Brilliant, but his mistake led to the goal.

With maturity, he'll cut that stuff out.

Gerrard showed a lot of hunger to intercept as well. Sometimes it happens.

I actually thought Gerrard fouled Carrick. His foot was too high when he made contact with the ball but Webb is a cünt. He let Liverpool get away with every 50-50 ball out there today.

I thought he should have got closer to Gerrard on their goal but overall he had a good game especially when it came to linking between Carrick and the front-line.

Great performance by Cleverley and was consistent for the whole 90 minutes. Him, Kagawa and Carrick linking up really well for our first goal. Although he made a mistake with the pass to Carrick that led to their goal. With experience he will learn when to play the dangerous tippy tappy pass and when to boot it down field.

Deserved a goal today.

For the fiirst half, outnumbered in the midfield by Xavi junior, the greatest defensive midfielder in the world and england's most dynamic man since the caped crusader and robin thwaked the penguin captain , he and Carrick gave them a football lesson the like I havent seen since Micheal Owen's Soccer Skills was aired.

hes not the finished article, as the odd mistake in the second half showed, but hes got the potential to be the man for us and england for a fair few years to come.

Same as Anderson tbh. Great 60 or so mins then runs out of gas. I'll take those 60 anytime though, but he needed to be replaced I thought.

Poor pass lead to their goal. The quick passing is great but, not in that area. Done well overall though. So glad to have him in the side along Carrick.
