I know you intended them, they still hurt me inside. ;)

True, we don't want to get into jinxing territory. I'm very superstitious about that shit.

I'm told I'm going to hear some very colorful language when I finally, after all these years, go to my first prem match on March 30 at Sunderland. Wife and kids in tow, too. I fear the worst, but I hope for the best!

Annoyed me today. Most so shortly before the offside Wigan goal where for some reason did not crosss the ball and lost it.

Just seemed a bit slow in seeing things. Oh well. Still doing a lot of good things.

fair point shimo. For me, I liked that he stayed more disciplined and made sure he was an option wherever he was around the pitch. This didn't really happen until the team started to pick it up. I noticed Wigan's tactics would be to pick up the CM who made an advancing run. Usually that was cleverley so he always had someone tracking.

Then he adjusted by starting deeper and making better runs. It was a good performance and he wont be talked about much because similar to carrick, alot of his work for the team goes unnoticed.

What he adds to the team is invaluable, and one of the main reasons you see less "zombifying" - movement. He plays quite high up the pitch, but he has the energy and stamina to make up the ground in the middle again.

His presence in the opposition half opens up so much space for our attackers and gives them another option to pass the ball to, when under pressure. That's probably the main thing Scholes can't offer to the side anymore.

Also, he's trying to keep it quite simple at the moment. Retaining possession. Laying it off to our other attackers. I'm sure, with a bit more confidence/when he feels like he's a undisputed starter in this side, he'll add a bit more variety/risk to his game.

He's been a solid 7/10 in most matches for us this season & he's complimenting Carrick very well.

Certainly, he has a great unique technique.

Lovely finish, made it look so easy.

He's always had it in him to score goals, wasn't he Watfords top scorer one season? He's had a couple of games for England where he seemed incapable of putting the ball in the back of the net. He's getting that confidence and if he could turn into a 10 a season player that would be great.

Certainly, he has a great unique technique.

It's Beckham. Classic curling finish from 10-15 yards out like v Blackburn (00:32):

Cleverley wraps his foot around the ball beautifully.

He has stated Beckham is his idol. No surprise he's trying to copy his technique.

I likened his style to Beckham in the newbies. Still, very unique in the PL, I don't see any other player like him.

Absolutely brilliant tonight. I'd go as far to argue he's on fire tonight and that whatever the score, he'll of contributed to a very high standard throughout the game, right up to the final whistle.
His control tonight has been even better than usual for me, as surprising as it sounds.
His touch for the goal was sublime and it's testament to how far he has come. He is an incredible player, and tonight we're seeing him in a consistently good form.
He's not excelling by any stretch of the word, but he's been consistent and hard working and has played well, linked up brilliantly and has contributed to a very high standard in my opinion.

He is coming along well but is going to be one hell of player when he gets some more experience under his belt and improves positional sense when we don't have the ball. His headless chicken running at times leaves him breathless and is the only thing stopping him from controlling the tempo of the game.

He can be our very own Iniesta. He's been trying to learn from Barca's midfield geniuses and i'd say he's picked up a few things. Goalscoring was the main facet of his game holding him back, but dare I say it, not any more.

He's done well in my eyes and his application is spot on. Slowly establishing himself in the team. Keeping to the basics and now getting amongst the goals as well. Keep it up Tom!

He's still ballooning the chances that come back to him from half cleared crosses, which are likely to be the chances that come his way more commonly. If he can learn to keep these down and work the goalkeeper it will be another significant string to his bow. Lampard, for example, is obviously excellent at this.

Yeah I was extremely disappointed that Tom didn't manage to keep that shot down early in the second half. I like that Cleverley has a way of hitting the ball and it does seem to work particularly when arriving at an angle, as we've seen today and against Sunderland and Newcastle. But sometimes I'd just like to see him put his laces through his shots like Lampard, Gerrard or Scholes have become known for especially when arriving square on. Happy with his performance, he's getting back to where he was at the start of last season now, but that is something I'd like to see Clev add to his game.

He is a player that always seems to be improving as seasons go by. He seems to be able to cope with every step up along the way.

He can be our very own Iniesta

Please don't be ridiculous, that is some RAWK shit right there. Iniesta is one of the best players in his position of all time. Clev is good, no question, but he is never going to be that good. I for one am worried about him fading after 60mins in games recently.

He didn't say he'd be as good as Iniesta, he said he'd be our own Iniesta. No mention of quality, simply a reference to playing style I would assume.

My mates rave about him but I'm still unsure, I think he's alright don't get me wrong but with everybody else giving it a Cleverley love fest I'm thinking maybe its because I've been spoilt with Robson Keane Scholes and even Veron that I can't yet see it with him.

That was my interpretation also.

He's a good player but he's not a great one. He does the basics well and will improve but for me, he's not a 'star'.

Not that it's a bad thing - on here it's like we only have "shit" or "world class" players. IMO Cleverley will grow into an accomplished footballer at the top level but lacks the quality to be a truly great player.

not sure where you lads see the Iniesta likeness. I see him as our Xavi. He's so economical with the ball. He seems more concerned with keeping possession than playing a risky pass. Iniesta is definitely the riskier of the two. I will say though, his movement does bear a slight resemblance to Iniesta.

He has a very strange way of striking the ball with his right foot. I think he raises his right arm, which is a bit weird. Usually it is the opposite arm that goes up to give balance. Then he sort of swings the right side of his body around to connect with the ball. Not so evident in yesterdays goal, but very evident in his longish passing and in his screamer from outside the box earlier this season.

Strange technique, yet still he is becoming pretty effective.

I agree with this. He can and should have a more than decent career with United all the same but we can't really expect him to become a "legend".

When it comes to it, I agree with the majority on here. I like him as a player and I think he is deserving of his place at the moment. But it terms of making a push to being one of Fergies best ever midfielders, he's not close to the likes of Robson, Keane, Scholes etc.

I like him, but if we got a new manager tomorrow with no loyalty to Manchester United as such (Mourinho for example) I think Cleverley would be one of the first players replaced.

I doubt that. Cleverley is not starting because Fergie has some kind of personal preference with him. He's starting because he is a very good player and the best thing about him is that he keeps on improving game by game. His technique, one touch passing is right up there. his long range passing is inconsistent but again improving all the time.

I'd have absolutely no issues if he was at the heart of our midfield for the next 10 years. Very good and judging by this page a very underrated player.

Another impressive display from him yesterday, on a slightly different note his partnership with Carrick is one of real quality. Both have different qualities but compliment each other perfectly for me.

Good to see him pick up another goal. Nice finish as well. Would be nice if we start to see him getting on the score sheet more regularly now

Shouldn't be compared to Xavi or Iniesta in style. More like Marchisio imo, obviously not as good though.

They show similarities for me. Marchisio was once used as a number 10 for Italy and it didn't quite work out although you could tell he was a good player. Similar to Hodgson trying to play Cleverley as a number 10. Both work hard and play short passes, they are neither defensive midfielders or attacking midfielders. Cleverley's best performance for us imo was against Newcastle in a diamond, similar to the role Marchisio has played before.

I don't like Cleverley as a number 10. His best role for me is somewhere between a more defensive minded midfield partner and a real number 10, in our team that's between Carrick and Rooney/Kagawa. As a number 10 he'd have to attempt a lot more risky passes and that's just not his game. In his current role he can still go on the attack when it's really on, but he can pick his moments instead of having to do so constantly. It brings out the best of his possession based short passing game.

I agree, I don't get this #10 thing at all really. Compare him to Kagawa or Rooney and you see the difference in what a #10 should be. I think right now he's been used where he should be, in the middle of the park, with a bit more freedom because Carrick is there, so that he can get forward and score some goals, play one-twos and help make things tick.

Incidentally, when Anderson is back and (when pigs fly) fully fit, would people rather see the two of them together again, or do we all agree that Carrick - Cleverley is the best midfield pairing we have?

Carrick is twice the CM Anderson is right now and will last the whole game without burning himself out. I think Ferguson knows the strongest pairing is Carrick/Cleverley as he's used it away at City and Chelsea. Giggs played instead at Anfield and we got bummed for most of the game by 10 men.
