He was better than Carrick and Fellaini...even Mata at times, but that is not saying much because those players have been asbysmal so far. Kagawa or even valencia or Young should have started ahead of him considering they are more match sharp.

Nonsense. The only time he was pressed on the ball he gave it away at the edge of the box.
He gave plenty of hospital passes to Rafael, because he never wanted to cut inside.
Not one unpredictable pass, not one dribble to create space, nothing.
As expected...

Not saying he played well. Just saying he played better than the players aforementioned.

Watch the game without tinted specs on and you'll see the last part of the 1st half, the reason we put them under so much pressure was because he was dropping deep, carrying the ball forward and releasing Rafa down the right. When he went off we became 10x lighter in the middle of the park and got walked over. It forced us to play on the counter and we were shit at it.

Give me the mediocrity of Cleverley over the mediocrity and absolute brainless thuggery of Fellaini any day. Despise that Fellaini is a United player.

won't judge his personal performance but things got worse after he went off

What do you mean by carrying the ball forward? He doesn't dribble - when there is somebody in front of him or near him.
I will admit it was the best he has played in a long time (apart from giving the ball away at the edge of the box).
However, his level is so much lower than all others, a good game by him is much worse than most other players' poor games.
We shouldn't make him a scapegoat, though. It's Moyes who deserves all the blame.

He picked the ball up and ran forward with it. Yes, he doesn't beat his man, but neither Fellaini nor Carrick actually ran with the ball today.

Pretty much this but without insulting Fellaini. I would rather stick with Cleverley who doesn't stop running for whole game instead of Fellaini who spends most of the game watching our other players chasing the opponents.

Btw, Scholes also thinks he shouldn't have been ubbed off.

There's no point. Cleverley would have to score a hat-trick for people to stop rattling off the same cliches.

Don't think he got injured. When Moyes was asked about him, instead of saying he picked up a little strain, Moyes kind of stumbled on the question then just said "Tom had an injury", and then said he was planning on changing it anyways.

Maybe I was too harsh on him earlier, but I thought he was shite, mostly because he was on the right though, out of position. Would rather have him then Fellaini, but neither are good enough, and Cleverley isn't strong enough mentally to be at this level.

feck, I swear I was thinking the same. It looked like Goeff was pushing Moyes to say he was injured for some reason, Moyes looked surprised at first, but later he agreed more than said he was injured.

Yeah. If he was actually injured, then the manager usually says he has a groin strain, or twinged something, but he clearly wasn't sure of what to say and didn't want to say he hooked him at half time because of tactics.

He grew in to the game a bit before he went off, but I think this just showed the problems of him in a three. He doesn't excel in any of; pace, power, vision, passing or technique, so he can't get away from people nor make the most of an opening that he gets. As the guy between the more defensive/attacking player he could do a job but he lacks consistency in his defensive work and can't press like say Fletcher could. That said I think if we had gone to kill the pace in the game he'd have done alright but where we're looking to hit on the counter and don't have anyone for him to give it to, to carry the ball up the pitch then he was always going to struggle.

Started in a midfield three, got shunted out to the wing in a swap with Mata and still gets blamed for the failing of the midfield three. Linked play with Rafael well, made a few good tackles but was reluctant to play the killer ball. So was obviously shit and isn't United quality.

Yeah, that was far from midfield three, I don't know what are people watching, he spent most of the time wide right.

Should have played his last game for us tonight. In fact, all three in there were clearly not up to it, but Cleverley was visibly scared of getting the ball or taking any real responsibility with it if/when he got it.

No way on earth is that a United player. I could probably find 20 players in the league who could give a better performance. At least.

Carrick is fecking useless and all right now. This is all too depressing for me.

Cleverley was in a midfield 3, we changed it after going behind and our midfield being invisible. He did indeed go out to the right hand side from then on

I'm one of his biggest critics who think he isn't United quality at all, and I thought his start to the game was woeful, but I have to admit I felt he grew into the game and was alright. He was played out right which he hasn't done properly in years, against one of the best teams in the league.

Still think he shouldn't be a first team player for us; in my pecking order he is about 5th for me, and that is no exaggeration at all.

Cleverley and Fellaini won the ball 3 times between them. Cleverley was 2 of them, same as Juan Mata.

It was just far too easy for City to pass the ball past them like they werent even there. Thats why Cleverley was moved to the right, our original formation wasn't doing anything to make it difficult for City. He did okay on the right.

Was key in us getting a foothold in the game, was screaming for the ball in good positions and not being picked out. I knew some people would try and slaughter him but he was pretty much our best player in the half we did good in.

He just passes the ball to whoever is closest to him and then hides. If he can't see anyone to pass to he spins around in a circle looking for that two yard killer pass of his before aimlessly curling the ball up the pitch when he can't find anyone.

Over and over.

When a 40 year old is doing a better job than him you know he's not going to make it here.

Horrible to say but I think he needs another loan, ignore his age, he is behind it clearly due to horrific injuries that may have ruined another's career, Tom's managed to recover but his form is so shot of what it once was and he needs constant game time, he isn't, won't and shouldn't get that here.

The media attention has shot his confidence completely. You could see when he got the ball, it was almost as simple as thinking what will the fans and papers think if I pass the ball here. Feel for him.

He is 25.

Valencia has had injuries. Should we loan him too? Barkley has had injuries, but has looked better than what Cleverley has shown.

I'm aware of his age, what's your point? You are aware players peak around 27-29 in midfield?

Valencia didn't have horrific injuries during the ages of 18-24, very different scenario.

Barkley has had injuries but is of a different set/frame he is a lot more "Rooney esque" in his frame, but it's irrelevant.

The boy is not good enough doesn't matter his age move him on. You can normally tell a players level by the age of 23 and Tom is way short of United class of old. Barry is a better player and that says it all.

TBF at Villa I thought Barry looked a great player. At Cleverley's age has was regularly dominating PL midfields and scoring a good amount from midfield. He's twice the player Cleverley is.

Oh god the 27-29 peak quote.

I could name 100s of midfielders, who peaked before that age. Or you could see they were going to be world class.

He's not good enough.
