I wouldn't go with Pogba from the start. I know the Europa League provides us with an opportunity to maybe rest some players and give youngsters a chance, but Ajax are tough opponents and I don't think we should really go and throw Pogba straight into the action. Maybe start him if we get a good win in this leg and can afford to rest players for the return tie.

I'm not sure whether Cleverley will start or not, but I've got a feeling that Fergie will put him on the bench and then bring him on towards the end of the game. He's been out for quite a while, so simply throwing him straight back into the first team could be a risky move. For this game, expect him to go with a more experienced midfield pairing. I can see us sticking with Carrick and Giggs in the centre presuming they'll both be available for the game.

Honestly i would be shocked if we see Carrick and giggs feature at all in this game. they have been our first choice pairing really, and will undoubtedly be again for the bigger PL games to come.

I suspect maybe Park or Jones may feature alongside a Cleverley or Pogba, maybe Anderson if he is fit, or even Jones. Not sure Fergie is too arsed about this competition tbh, so i fully expect many of our first team rested, with some fringe players or players returning from injury to feature.

I dunno, I can't see fergie not wanting to win this. We're out of both domestic cups already I'm sure he's like this to compensate. We're not playing this weekend either. I agree though that we should rest some players such as the older ones and Valencia. Ideally carrick too but as he's the only midfielder we have that can play that role with fletch out I think he'll have to start. Can't see Pogba starting having not been deemed ready to start in league cup matches. Hopefully if we're comfortable we can take carrick of asap and get someone else on.

Possibly. I hadn't really thought of Park or Jones in all honesty. Both may not be out and out central midfielders, however they can both play there and aren't guaranteed to start for the league matches. Again, I don't see Cleverley being thrown back into first team action. I think he's more likely to come off the bench if anything. I also don't see Pogba starting, because he is still inexperienced. I don't think we can put him in the first team based on a decent cameo against Stoke.

Anyway, I think he's likely to go with one of Carrick or Giggs to try and seal if this tie in the first leg if he can. It's hardly our main priority, but given the chance to win it, I think Fergie would still like to do well in the competition nevertheless.

I can see Cleverley starting, actually, though obviously none of us know how much he can offer. If he's physically capable of starting, I think he will, because we want to take his return forward and because we'd like to give other midfielders a rest, but it won't be alongside Pogba, that would be a little nuts, assuming we want to win the game.

Should be a fairly strong team, with the odd rested player, also dependent on who we have available back from injury. Should look for a good result which would allow us to rest a few players for the return leg, which comes ahead of the Norwich game.

I definitely think he'll start, after Giggs and Scholes both playing 90 minutes. It would be nice if Anderson were back as well, what the hell is up with him?

In the starting line-up.

Good to see him getting his first appearance since October. And will be interesting to see if he plays as we expect - playing alongside Carrick certainly will help him.

He's done ok so far. Him and Carrick have been arse raped in the middle of the pitch by Ajax though.

Excuse me, what was that?

Christ, some people really are hellbent on talking down our central midfield.

We've pretty much controlled the match so far without really breaking a sweat.

Been good so far. But our central midfielders can't do that much when our wingers are so off color.

I really like how he has that bit of movement to create space and make himself available for a pass. Similar to what Eriksson does for Ajax (but further up the pitch). I think he's lightyears ahead of Anderson when it comes to that

feck I feel bad getting so excited and heaping so much pressure on young shoulders but the boy can play. He's great at pressing too, wonderful to have him back.

Brilliant to have him back available, he looks like he's never been out. Good run today and the return leg next should have him back to fitness ready for the league matches.

Another good performance from Tom. Did a great job tracking back and winning the ball as well. Nice, quick, short, crisp passing from him and we looked better tonight. Was hoping to see him and Scholes work together but he needed to come off and it was the right decision.

He's an extremely mature player considering how little football he's had at this level. His movement, passing and overall awareness on the pitch is what sets him apart.

Seems to have come back sharp, some of his one touch football was fantastic. No need to rush him back when we have an ok debuty waiting on the bench. :smirk:

That one long, quick pass was just superb and shows what he brings to the side. Plus, one of the few midfielders that actually plays and moves that we have

He played two superb passes.

One first time down the flank to Nani(?) and another lofted into the box for Hernandez who could've done better with his pass.

The rest was very neat and tidy and I'm pretty sure he didn't give the ball away once.

Great to see him back in the first team. It's going to be interesting to see if he can nail down a place in the first team again.

Ajax' academy often, and rightfully, gets a lot of praise but blimey do we have some proper talent coming through as well.

Great to see him back. Played as if he had not been away.

I actually thought he looked rusty, he wasn't closing players down as quickly as he did and it looked as though he was thinking about the odd pass. Still good enough peformance for his first proper game back. You could see him though expecting more of the ball from Carrick, calling for it quickly after he passed to him. What did surprise me was how broad he looked in comparison to pretty much the entire Ajax team. Strangely I thought hewas getting to his best when he was taken off.

In case you missed it, thanks again for the stream links on your homepage.

Manchester United's Tom Cleverley gives glimpses of his special touch

Midfielder's comeback is perfectly timed for the business end of the season and makes a great alternative to Paul Scholes

England can forget about Paul Scholes, as Sir Alex Ferguson made plain with undisguised Scottish disdain before Manchester United's entry into the strange land of the Europa League, but it will not be long before they call for another precision midfielder who has reappeared at an opportune moment in the champions' season. Tom Cleverley was eased back against Ajax and even in a low-key return he showed why he has attracted more tributes than appearances for United.

The first-leg meeting with Frank de Boer's pragmatic Ajax will not register in the annals at Old Trafford other than for the night Cleverely made his European debut for the club at the age of 22. For a United player of such promise it has been a long time coming, a reflection of the level Ferguson's teams had been operating at in Europe prior to this season but also the injury problems that have curtailed Cleverley's progress and saw him given only 60 minutes against the Dutch club.

This was only the midfielder's eighth appearance in a United shirt in a season that was interrupted for six weeks after a foot injury sustained in a challenge with Kevin Davies at Bolton and then, two matches into his comeback, another four months after suffering ankle ligament damage at Everton. His previous seven outings had also resulted in a United victory, notably that 8-2 destruction of Arsenal and his display against Manchester City in the Community Shield when, for the undoubted promise on show, predictions of the new Scholes or the cheaper alternative to Wesley Sneijder always seemed a little premature.

The game reflected the status of European football's long, winding and overblown second competition rather than that of the two opponents but there were occasional glimpses from Cleverely of the energy and accuracy he brings to the United midfield. A direct confrontation with Ajax's coveted young Dane, Christian Eriksen, a player linked with Old Trafford, offered the glimpse of a potential midfield of the future. That never materialised as caution consumed the two sides.

Twice Cleverley demonstrated vision worthy of Scholes. In the first half he demanded a ball inside from Michael Carrick and instantly swept a superb pass for Wayne Rooney in space down the right. In the second, as Ajax cleared a United free-kick, he picked out Javier Hernández inside a crowded penalty area with a precise volley. Both opportunities were squandered by United and it did not help Cleverley to find so many of his outlets – Nani, Hernández and Ashley Young, irrespective of their goals – enduring nights when a good first touch was often beyond them.

United's young players require European experience as the team's feeble exit from the Champions League in Basel, and the analysis from Roy Keane that so irked Ferguson, underlined. Injury absolved Cleverley from any culpability for the Champions League campaign and here he showed the pace and movement to support the United attack as Scholes once did but no one could in their absence in Switzerland.

To the United manager, who recently salivated at the prospect of his midfield being improved by two players at opposite ends of the age scale, Cleverely's comeback is perfectly timed for the business end of the season and allows him an alternative to playing Scholes for 90 minutes, regardless of how exemplary those 90 minutes were against Liverpool on Saturday. "It will be great to get the boy back because I think he's special," said Ferguson as Cleverley completed his latest rehabilitation. "He will be desperate to play with Scholes. We have a great collection of midfield players."

The master replaced the apprentice in Amsterdam and the expectation upon Cleverley is immense. As Eric Harrison, the former United youth coach synonymous with the best of the club's production line, said: "Tom for me is, without question, so good that he is the best young player at United since Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham came on to the scene."

Barring injuries he'll be at United for the next decade. If anything Anderson should be worried about his United future who's had a horrid time with injuries, resulting in him being very inconsistent.
