He should have scored today. He was absolutely open and he did not finish well. Hopefully he can score a few goals this season.

Carrick
Cleverly------------------------Anderson

will be the midfield which we will play against big teams surely a lot this season..

I don't think we need to play a 3 man midfield in the group stages. They are not overly strong opponents. But in the later stages, yes.

But he should have scored......a goal would give him more confidence too.

He's hardly lacking confidence. Sure, a goal would have been 'nice', but he's a young lad with huge confidence in his own ability - he's clearly not lacking any.

-------Jones------
Cleverley--Anderson

In the big games? Jones is very mobile so could be a better alternative to Carrick

It's pleasing how mobile he is actually. He's big and stocky but has that in his locker. I think if you take him out of the team right now, we'd miss him and so he should be a consideration anyway.

What were his passing stats?

Tom Cleverley attempted 69 passes today and completed 89.9%. Dare I say it, almost Scholes-esque. #MUFC

Tom Cleverley has attempted 168 passes in #MUFC's 3 league games so far, and completed 150 of them, a success rate of 89.3%.

Great form...he'll score sooner rather than later. He's had good chances against Spurs and Arsenal. Nice to have a midfielder who's getting himself into that position.

Great player, he'll never be as good as Zindane, but you don't win anything with 11 superstars. You build your team to the strengths of a few and plug the gaps with great players who would give everything for the club.

I really hope he is here in 10 years time.

Cheers! He gives the ball away so few times, brilliant to see

I like the ease in possession Cleverley has, I think him and Anderson can get 10 goals between them this season as well.

My first post in the mains! As the maintainer of the Cleverley thread in the newbies, I'd just like to post here first! I love this little guy, and he's blown all my expectations out of the water!

He really does look like Iniesta out there the way he moves in space and knows where he's going to pass it before he even gets it. Haven't seen him looking surprised or confused for even a moment, looks like an old pro out there.

He looks like a cracking little player with a good workrate and solid attitude. One of his most impressive traits is his link up play, he has a great ability receive the ball and pass it on quickly and has real awareness of where his teammates are. Another thing I saw yesterday was a surprising strength on the ball which I've not seen before from him.

He's been very impressive of late, my only quarrel is that he should have had a couple of goals given the positions he's got himself in.

As long as he's playing this well... I don't really mind about him scoring. Just like the chief, I think he could have put away most of his chances so far but lets just say he's focusing on using that current ability to focus on his short passing right now which is definitely making us tick.

We have many other players that can score so I'm not worried one bit.

I don't want to see a United team without Cleverley and Anderson in the centre. They're playing wonderfully well together. Cleverley was great today.

a bit nuts that Carrick, Fletcher, Park are going to have to force their way back into the 1st XI which of course they eventually will, but I love how SAF has backed youth a ye start of this season.

How does he do it????!!!!! He just knows exactly the right time to blood in in young talent and make experienced players like Berbatov stew in the stands whilst a kid called Welbeck plays in his pace. Its great to see.

Are you serious? You make him sound like a water carrier after 3 games lol

What I don't get is why his goal getting ability seems to have abandoned him. In the past I'd have backed him to put away the easy chances he has had in recent weeks away easily.

I disagree. He scored a good goal in pre season. Against spurs he had a good effort saved. Yesterday his first chance maybe came at him too quickly to adjust his body. The second he should score from but just doesnt get power behind it but he's shootings been 'clean' so it's just a matter of time i think. I reckon he'll get say 5 goals or so

I am fairly serious, I'd be surprised if he turned into one of the best ever, but I think he is perfect for us.

Wow, captain obvious.

One of the best ever? Christ.

Really sticking your neck on the line with that one.

All those quick passes mean that the defense has almost no chance to close down and double team the man on the ball.

An underrated skill, especially when you don't play as cautiously as Barca where 2 out of 3 of Xavi's passes go backwards.

Can't wait to see him play for England, I think he'll be like medicine for that sick team.

keep him away from England. That's a toxic team.

 FFS....

I've loved seeing him (and Ando btw) so far this season, its great to have Cleverly in the first team and playing the sort of football he is.

It'll be interesting to see what sort of partnerships he can forge with players like Carrick & Fletcher when they come in, see how the dynamics change.

Yeah, it does worry me that England could infect our players. But if over half the team is United, especially in attack, I think we could also cure that sick beast.

Though England is very cursed, the power of football taught by Matt Busby can overcome!

He has the confidence to be the new Scholes.

Just wait and see the season he will have.

When I saw the long pass to Young that led to the free kick from which Rooney scored United's 3rd goal I was thinking to myself: I wonder if anyone on the CAF still thinks Cleverley can't pass over distance? As I've said before one of the most stunning parts of his game is his decision making. Invariably Cleverley makes the right choice at the right time whether that be short or long, one touch or two touch. Remarkable player in the making is Tom Cleverley.

Agreed. Was very pleasantly surprised at his long passing in that move. Playing CM for United means you'd have to be very good at spreading the ball to the flanks, usualy over long distance, ala Scholes. I think Cleverley has it in him to play that role.

Only god knows eh...

Hes making fantastic strides, even the likes of Zizou had to do this before becoming the player we all remember so fondly.

If he keeps it up the sky is the limit. He's got a fantastic footballing brain. Brilliant work ethic and all he needs now is his first goal, and dare i say he could catch fire like our ginger ninja used to.

Why in the hell are you comparing him to Zidane?

It'll be interesting to see how he does once the dust settles down and the games start getting tough. He's flying at the moment.

I've really taken to him. I love the way he just plays with composure as if he already thinks he's the main man, but at the same time has that teenage Rooney-esque buzzing energy about him. He's really sharp too. He doesnt always see the right pass, but he is a pretty good judge of whether a pass is on or not, and his first touch is always about where he's decided to move the ball onto. Not a lot of midfielders can do that without receiving the ball first and then looking up.

Why the feck were Wigan and the U21s playing him on the wing?
