long passes fecking ell lads. Our best football is playing short snappy football not hoof it!

I agree but we sometimes need long balls like the ones Scholesy always use to do. We don't necessary hoof it up because we have people who can head the ball well up front but we do it with a purpose. We use wide players often and it is necessary to ping those long diagonal passes.

Anderson is very capable of doing that. As is Young and Nani. I really prefer Toms clean, crisp, short passing, its extremely effective. It will be interesting to see if he starts!

Andersons long passes often leave a lot to be desired.

We should probably wait a while to see if he is capable or not of the longer passes. With his ability and desire to learn, if he is to play a more central role, I think he'll have it in his locker. The short quick passing and ability to handle pressure is probably a lot more difficult to learn than making cross field passes. He may never be as deadly as Scholes but, he'll be fine when it comes to it.

Long passes is about opening up the play not (necessarily) about getting it forward quickly. We use it all the time whether it's Carrick, Scholes, Anderson or even Fletcher (even though neither of the latter excel at it) because we have such pace and width to exploit and open up the game.

Cleverleys only played a couple of games for us. At the minute i'm sure his role is just keepin it simple letting things tick along nicely. Its worked to good effect so far.

Personally i'm a fan of pass and move along the deck, and it pains me seeing long balls unless its someone who can pull them off consistently like Scholes. I think Cleverley has it in his repertoire but at the minute i think he's just finding his feet, with growing confidence after a run of games i think we'll see him try a few.

Rooney is the one player who switches the ball so effectively for us right now. He rarely misses.

I think that's the type of player he is. He'll add bits and pieces and score goals but you won't see too many long raking balls from him. He might add that into his game down the line but it depends how he develops. I'm a fan too of the controlled pass. There are times to play it long but it should be the exception not the rule.

A long pass can be a controlled one. Scholes was the master, when on song teams simply couldn't cope with him spreading it wide to either winger, opening up so many angles of play.

I think Cleverley got a good passing range at his disposal, and it's only going to get better. He's surprising more and more people by the day.

It would halt his progress. No doubts. I wouldnt mind another young midfielder to share the role. But perhaps not someone to nick it off him

He seemed to just take a millisecond too long when he had gotten into some good positions before the assist. After the assist that slight hesitation disappeared completely and he became class.

I thought he was superb against Spurs. He is always wanting the ball and always in space for it but he is very good at making runs that drag defenders out of spaces making channels for his team mates to run into with the ball or to recieve the ball. He looks like he has a huge future ahead of him to me.

I thought he was fine all through the game, his movement off the ball was no different before the goal or after the goal. He is clearly playing to instructions and its clear thos instructions are to be the link man and simply move the ball on with quick simple passes.

Definitely. Similar story for Welbeck as well.

Would have had a goal as well but for a wonderful save by Friedel.

He's just so damn dynamic in his play, always wanting to make things happen. A trait he shares with so many of our new additions.

This season looks so fecking exciting, I'm looking forward to every single game!

Agreed. That goal really benefit both he and Welbeck. He was visibly lifted by putting a stamp on the game and once he'd created that first goal his self-belief was visibly reinforced and he started to really show his quality. The fact that Harry sent for Huddlestone showed how Chunks and Ando (who was magnificent) just ran Spurs ragged in the centre of midfield.

I don't think there is a necessity for Cleverley to learn the art of floating 40 yarders. Sure it is a good skill to have in your arsenal, but he can continue playing short one touch passes to penetrate into the final third. It is equally as effective.

Didn't seem as majestic today as against City, but still a good performance. Cleverley setting up Welbeck, and Welbeck scores.......we could be hearing that for years to come. That's how good these young lads are.

So strange because he didn't seem like this kind of player every time I saw him for Wigan... and I have to admit that I don't recall seeing him much for the reserves... But he's such a tidy player... Knows where people are, where to pass it and which passing technique to use, how to make himself available... The cross was a peach as well :)

I've started to really look forward to seeing him in action.

good game, good delivery. still i expect more from him.

This is only, what, his 4th game for us in his entire career? Some bloody high expectations that. He's kept the play ticking along wonderfully well and he's been excellent in the tippy-tappy football in the attacking areas, if he keeps this same level for the whole season he'll have been a revelation for me.

Anderson and Cleverley are just starting out this partnership together. But you can see how good they are going to get.

We aint seen nothing yet lads.

So far so good but its still early days and i m sure that later in the season both carrick and fletcher have an important role to play.

That whipped cross just had a Beckham stamp all over it. And he was ok, keeping the game ticking along, should have put his foot through that ball instead of trying to curl it around Friedel.

Jesus, read my posts about Tom in this thread. I expect more from Cleverley becasue i know how bloody gifted this player is. he can do better that we've seen today.

Really, we don't need any midfield reinforcements. Just be patient for a year or two and let our youngsters come up. Pogba and Morrison are going to be just as good, we have very, very good talent coming through.

He does remind me a lot of Xavi. Obviously he's still young & learn'n but you can see the similarities. Once he got the confidence after that assist he bossed the game. Fergie has had very big plans for this lad for a long time.

This, I thought he was once again fantastic in tight spaces.

It can be but not everyones Paul Scholes. You don't get the same quality from Anderon or Carrick. Rooneys probably one of the best at it.

The most impressive thing for me was how they relatively quickly (Ando and Cleverley I mean) managed to overcome that 10 minute spell early in the second half where I was worried Spurs were getting on top and were overruning us a bit

Nah it was the right choice, he should have just gotten it a little closer to the post and it couldn't have been saved by any keeper. There were two people blocking his shot, and Friedel's sight.
