This is only, what, his 4th game for us in his entire career? Some bloody high expectations that. He's kept the play ticking along wonderfully well and he's been excellent in the tippy-tappy football in the attacking areas, if he keeps this same level for the whole season he'll have been a revelation for me.

Exactly. We were productive because we kept the ball. His interchanging with Anderson and the rest was fine. There were moments where he could do this or that better, but that's human nature and it's not a Cleverly issue. So I agree, if he maintains it then we'll hopefully be watching some great football from united for a long time to come.

He finished strongly. That's what counts.

I don't want to criticise him for playing safely to start with. He's still new to the team and there's a lot of expectation being put on him. With time he will surely assert himself more and start playing expansive football from the start. When he decides to take the initiative his intelligence usually leads to decent chances for us. As a creator I do believe he has what it takes.

He just fits in really, and that's the biggest compliment one can give him. I thought he would struggle in a midfield two as a conventional central midfielder, but he and Anderson's got plenty of energy and gets about the pitch well, taking turns at holding the midfield. What we do know is he's got goal threat and can pass creatively, as he's shown already this season, so expect end product from him when he's fully used to running things in CM for United!

Nah it was the right choice, he should have just gotten it a little closer to the post and it couldn't have been saved by any keeper. There were two people blocking his shot, and Friedel's sight.

Yeah, def the right choice. His decision making is arguably the most impressive part of his game. Hitting it first time for Welbeck's goal made all the difference.

Football premier-league: Exclusive - Sheringham: Cleverley can replace Scholes | Radio talkSPORT

By Wally Downes
Tuesday, August 23

Manchester United hero Teddy Sheringham believes his former side has found the perfect man to fill the void left by Roy Keane and Paul Scholes in 22-year-old Tom Cleverley.

The 1999 Champions League winner watched United take apart another of his former sides, Tottenham, last night and highlighted the youngster as a ready-made replacement for the retired United legends.

Plaudits have poured out for newfound Old Trafford defenders Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, after Sir Alex Ferguson suffered a series of injuries to his defence, but ex-England striker Sheringham believes Cleverley is the man to lead United’s next generation.

“It’s at a time that without Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic they would not have wanted to be starting the season but the players that have come in have done so well. Smalling looks like he has been there for years and the boy Phil Jones looked fantastic last night,” Sheringham said.

“But the two that have been most impressive for me have been Cleverley and Welbeck. Cleverley in midfield looks like a very accomplished player, he plays a very experienced game in midfield, just passing it and moving it when he has to. I’m sure he’s had years of watching Roy Keane and Paul Scholes and the way they play and I think he will be a follow on from that.

“And Welbeck; I am very impressed with him, especially with his movement and his backheel for the goal last night was fantastic.”

I just love this lad. He brings such simplicity to the game. I hope he plays 25 odd games in the premier league for us.

Yeah, who would have thought he would come straight into the squad like this. I still have hardly seen him play. He looks very very good.

He is very promising indeed. I really like his style of play. Will be a joy to watch in the future if he keeps developing as he has done.

Any old fecker can hit Hollywood balls all game long and get drooled over when one of five come off - see Charlie Adam or Jordan Henderson. Cleverley does the small things very well. He's got a great head on his shoulders and his short passing and movement off the ball are years ahead of where you'd expect for someone who's only played one top flight season in a shit team. He's always either offering a safety valve or making an advanced run to give an attacking option after the pass. His ability in the final third has shown to be quality as well - see the inch perfect cross for Welbeck's goal against Spurs and the shot that would've probably beaten 18 other goalkeepers in the Premier League - denied only because Brad Friedel is inhuman against us.

Cleverley was a lot more defensively responsible against City than he was against WBA or Spurs. I'd say it's a tactics thing, not purely a learning thing.

Anderson has made a good fist of doing the holding role in the mean time. Against Spurs he had 6 interceptions and won 3/5 tackles.

But then to be fair against Spurs at times it was like we were playing a 4132 with Anderson sitting in front of the back 4 and Cleverley as a purely attacking mid.

Only takes one touch when many would use two or three - sign of a potentially very good midfielder.

Yeah, his efficieny on the ball not only makes him a perfect foil for Anderson, it suits our other attacking players really well. Gives our other players that extra second on the ball before they're closed down. He makes very astute tactical decisions.

“Regarding Tom Cleverley, I’ve been saying to any United supporter who wants to listen for three or four years that this lad is really, really good, very special just like Welbeck, no question about it. If he had been in that Class of ‘92 he’d have come through just like those lads did.

“Tom is a steady kind of kid who listens and learns – he can get to the very top as a player.

“He’s not like Scholes in controlling the tempo of a game, opening everything up and shooting on sight. He’s more like a Barcelona player, quick with his one-twos.

“He is great taking up positions in space and works ever so well with Rooney. If he doesn’t make it big at United and England I’ll jump in the Manchester Ship Canal.”
--Eric Harrison

Considering Harrison's involvement with the class of '92 that's a big statement indeed...

...still I don't think Eric will be swimming in the canal anytime soon. ;)

I've said it before and I'll say it now, I love that most of us have known of his potential for at least 2 seasons and now the media all of a sudden is just like WHO IS THIS ENGLISH MIDFIELDER WHO CAN ONE TOUCH PASS? WHAT IS THIS?!?

As a citizen of this country I feel its actually quite embarrasing that English midfielders who can play pass and move football are so rare that the media have gone monkeys about him. As a United fan however I'm absolutely delighted that he's come through at our club and not somewhere else. Frankly I've gotten a bit bored listening to how great Arsenal are at honing youth. We've got a potential star in the making again and I gotta say it feels good...:D

Can't wait til he does something like this in a competitive game:

A lot more eye-catching today.

He effectively helped to run the show from midfield. I thought he looked a class apart against the Arsenal "youngsters". I try not to hype him up so soon but he's doing that all by himself.

The kid was wonderful today. Passed the ball with grace and made everything looked so effortless. Was a shame he didn't score.

His off the ball movement is a joy to watch, reminds me so much of the Barca players when they make a pass they instantly move to create space and present themselves for a return.
Being intelligent off the ball isn't given to a lot of players, I love the way he keeps things simple yet so efficient

This.

Only thing he could've improved on today was hitting the back of the net when he was through. Never gave Arsenal's midfield a sniff today and did his defensive work all day long.

He simply improves appearance after appearance...

Very tidy in possession, works hard and he always finds space and knows what he is going to do with the ball before he actually gets it. Needs to improve his shooting!

I don't want to see a United team without Cleverley and Anderson in the centre. They're playing wonderfully well together. Cleverley was great today.

I love how he makes a pass in a tight space, and then immediately is presenting himself asking for the ball.

It's, well, Scholes-like. He is always ready to receive the ball, and he is usually going to do something useful with it.

With Wilshere, Josh McEachran, and Cleverley the English national team have their own set of technical, gifted midfielders coming up.

Tom Cleverley has attempted 168 passes in #MUFC's 3 league games so far, and completed 150 of them, a success rate of 89.3%

That is a staggering stat. If I was to describe Cleverley in two words, it would be SIMPLE but EFFECTIVE. Okay that was three but you get the idea.

yeah, but he's not a central midfielder......:p

Playing well with Anderson. They're enjoying it and for the majority, it was controlled play. There will be sterner tests defensively but I think we've added another bow to our arsenal with his interchanging around the box. Was unlucky he couldn't get more power behind his shot.

Brilliant.

He actually reminds me of Hernandez, funnily enough. Busy player, always looking to be positive, always looking keen. I really like that quality in both of them. Having a partner high on those qualities is helping Anderson as well.

Another very good performance. Such a shame he couldn't put away that chance after the 1-2 with Hernández.

He seems abit like Iniesta. His build and pass and move playing style, and he can get himself out of tight situations as well. Give him the games!
