His instinct is to play the ball backwards, rather than forwards. Plays very safely, low risk football, needs to believe more and have the confidence to make more incisive passes. He’s tidy enough in possession though.
That's perfect for Amorim's system. It demands high pass completion and ball retention. Ball progression comes from other areas.

Well that's possibly true but thats EXACTLY what was needed for those last 2 cameos, no? More control, calm possession? Thought he was super effective in both games.

Think he’s done well enough since coming in. Another good prospect who probably won’t make it long term with us but can still be useful in the squad

His passing and vision are nothing to see. But he inject energy by open up as passing outlet, quick on closing opponent, is not hopeless in contesting for ball.

For now, it’s too early to judge if he’s good enough longterm. But now he’s good enough NOT to be liability, and good enough to have some use here and there

I didn't realise we got him from Brighton. He'll definitely want to play tomorrow so!

I don't know how good a footballer he'll turn out to be, or even if he'll make it long term at United, but at least he has a bit of athleticism and mobility which we sorely lack in the team!

He replaces Casemiro in the squad so if Casemiro does the right thing and fecks off this month then Toby saves us a fortune in wages.

He could be the perfect cover for Ugarte.. He's technically very good, good first touch, good passer, and tenacious.. He's pretty rapid too.. We could have a gem on our hands.

I like him, seems that he has the raw Tools to survive in the Premier League. He is athletic and a decent passer of the ball.

From what I saw of his clips from Brighton and England youth games his first instinct is not to play backwards as he always has his head up and is looking forwards. I think it is probably more the case of players not making runs or making themselves available in front of him that leads to the ball going backwards.
Brighton were majorly pissed off when he would not commit to them and I think we are starting to find out why.

He’s been decent so far in the last couple of games, still a long way to go before it’s obvious he’s going to be good enough long term.
I do like the fact Amorim is starting to bring more youth through, no real choice but still great to see. Hoping Casemiro leaves in the winter window, doesn’t seem likely though as not that much interest in him.

Man Utd 1:3 Brighton New
Rabbit in the headlights today. This promotion to the first team squad looks way too early for him.

He needs to be more aware of his surroundings. The pace of the EPL is fast and definitely several big notches above youth team standards.

Youth player looking decent in a somewhat functional team and rather poor in a struggling team. Nothing unusual, not his fault the other options in midfield don't look better

Was good against Southampton and Arsenal but now suddenly he's crap?

He wasnt great in those games, neither is he crap because he struggled against Brighton. Ugarte wasnt that good against them either and hes much more experienced. He didnt really win the ball (1 tackle, 0 interceptions in 37 mins) or move the ball particularly well. He was probably slightly worse than Mainoo who is a year and a few months younger.

I didnt say he was great in those games nor that he was good against Brighton.

I watched his highlights from the last few games and from the pre-season tour and he is not as limited as is being made out to be. He played through balls and long balls over the top and carried the ball forward several times.

Once he is more comfortable in the team, I anticipate we will see more of that side of his game.

Every player looked out of their depth against Brighton. Tragically they're just that much better than us at the moment.

I’d start him tomorrow and give him a proper chance to show what he can do rather than sub appearances when we’re getting beat or under the cosh which seems to have been his lot so far.

Absolutely. Same for 19 year old Mainoo, who is taking pelters from loads of posters.

I don't go on other club forums so I can't be sure whether this disease is shared by supporters of other clubs or not, but United supporters here are excessively harsh on our young players.

When it comes to Bruno, Onana, Maguire and so on by all means have at a go when they drop turds, but we need to understand that young players have a learning curve that is an inescapable part of becoming a professional athlete.
