Christ sake, what is wrong with looking to recoup money from player sales?Yet everyones asking why we aren't buying players and all the talk is that we have to sell before we buy.
We only have to sell before we buy because our squad is bloated and the wage bill keeps increasing. We could quite easily afford to buy Willian and Maguire/Alderweireld without selling a single player if we really wanted to. It's not like our bank account has gone in to its overdraft.

Seriously, why are loads of people going on about re-sale value? When has that ever been relevant? Why should that ever matter to United?

Why not ?He won't cost too much in January and jones/Smallings injury records aren't great so there won't be any over crowding.

I just asked earlier. The clause doesn't kick in until the summer. They have no need to lower the price in January.

Don't twist what you said. You didn't say recoup money from player sales. You specifically said re-sale value and insinuated that we shouldn't be buying players with no re-sale value as if that should matter to a club of our statue. I guess you were outraged when we signed a 29 year old RvP and shifted him for peanuts.

Sorry mate but you are wrong,I did not insinuate at all,I made a point that buying two 29 year olds(almost 30 for Willian) for about £120m on at least 4 year contracts would see us get absolutely nothing back for them once we moved them along. You were just looking for an argument.

Van Persie didn't cost 120 million.Great signing for 1 season though.

Given our record with buying CBs for high fees and them not working out in a way that explains why we bought them for so much over the past couple of years, I think its a very smart criteria not to be buying a player who if it doesnt work out, wont recoup much of his fee

Who have we bought for a high fee?

@InLevyITrust, what do you think of all this Maguire is a smokescreen for Alderweireld deal? Do you think that's what's happening?

I have no idea, some people were suggesting that we were interested in Maguire a few weeks ago although I didn’t see it. I think there has been a figure mentioned to Woodward that Toby will cost so much if Martial was involved (2 separate transfers off) and a little less realistic price if Martial isn’t involved. From what we know there has actually been no offers received for Toby from anyone.

Taking this whole saga back further there was rumours that Toby had originally said he would sign a contract for £140 a week, he then decided that wasn’t enough, that pissed Poch and Levy off no end and refused point blank to negotiate further although the new contact is still there is Toby chooses it. How much of this is true I have no idea but it would certainly explain why Toby suddenly fell out of favour.

Anywho I think he will end up at United I’d say around £50M, just a hunch nothing more.

Someone who understand that increased cost today will make us less competitive on the transfermarket on a later stage?

Then, why is there such an outrage over selling Martial? At around £60 million, we'll be making a profit.

Appreciate the reply mate

Probably because a player like Martial could be useful for the next ten years. That means he is valued at £6 mill per year. Willian is quoted at £60 mill. He will probably not be worth anything in three years time. Thay imply a cost at £20 mill per year. And probably a lot higher wages. It drives our cost up. It makes us less competitive for other players.

And usually a player is better in the age period ranging from 22-25 than from 30-33.

Couldn’t care less about profit or loss. I want to keep Martial because he’s clearly an extremely talented player and we’d almost certainly regret selling him, especially for a short term fix.

We have plenty of money. Our aim is to buy players to help us win trophies, not to sell on at a profit.

He doesnt want them to be a profit. He wants them to have some amount of value if they dont settle at United so we dont end up with nothing

We've had plenty of players i nthe last 5 years who have come and gone, and only Zlatan went for nothing. It's not something worth worrying about

We should not be worried about selling on players we are buying in the peak of their career.

No. But we should be worried about the cost of our players if we want to stay competitive. And knowing the potential «sale value» give an indication about cost. Thats the point!

If we want to be competitive we have to buy the right players. The resale value means feck all to us. We only sell deadwood anyway. We aren't Liverpool, we don't need to sell our best players to spend big on players.

Actually we sold most of our players in that time for very little
We didn't make a massive loss on any of them. Our revenue keeps increasing each year so I'll say again, the resale value means feck all to us, unless we're consistently buying players for £40-50m and selling for £10m a year or two later, which is never going to happen.

"Dead wood" = players who we bought, didnt settle or didnt find the form they had at their previous clubs. Plenty of our CB signings would fit that description and thats why a 29 year old for the biggest fee of the lot of them is a risk.
