Toby Alderweireld

I wonder how he feels about being priced out of a move and relegated to a squad player at Spurs, still earning way below what players of his stature can earn. Would be very keen to see quotes from him in the near future.

Of course it's not. You can develop consistency, performance, work rate, movement, shooting, passing and basically anything a player learns to do on the pitch, but you can't develop either talent or leadership quality, because it's something in your personality. You either have the ability and strong or calm character to lead the team or not. It has nothing to do with age either. It's part of his personality. Some young players show calm and composed personality that shows they can be leaders, while others not.
Let me put it this way, there are people with leadership qualities who are no leaders. Maybe you will get my point easier this way.

Well, that doesn't negate my point then. You need to have the leadership qualities in your personality, and shows you have the character and personality, then work on it to become a leader, isn't that your point ? I don't disagree with it. My point is if you don't have the leadership qualities or the leading personality from the start, you'll never become a leader so it's not something you can develop out of nowhere, unlike other football basics.

What happened to Poch asking for Levy to get rid of players fast that don't want to be there?

So you really think peoples personalities are not developed?
Leaders are developed in all walks of life.

Yes. Some people aren't leaders by nature and will never be whatever efforts you exert on them to become. If it was that easy, anyone would have walked into a leading or responsibility position with a success if he worked hard, which simply doesn't happen, not in football or real life.

Disagree but thats cool

Of course you need to have leadership qualities to become a leader, as you need footballing qualities to be a footballer. I said we need to grow and develop leaders not bring “ready” made ones upon the group, I think we even tried the latter with Zlatan but it was short term.

Doesn't disagree much with this point then.

I don't really want this guy. Good player but way better value out there. Gimenez from Atletico would be my muppet choice.
I believe he recently signed a new contract and is back in good graces with Simeone. He's not going anywhere. He's a potentially great defender though and improving all the time. Has taken a lot of the dumb mistakes and brain farts out of his game. I guess playing alongside Godin so long will do that.

I want us to sign the player, and I'm not one to give much of a shit about transfer fees BUT if we have made a bid of £55 million, that is incredibly generous given his contract situation / age. If that isn't good enough, move on.

I'd rather we stay away from overpriced Spurs players. They hardly missed him last season.

We hardly missed him too. But that doesn’t stop us from wanting to improve. He’s definitely top 3 in the league. But I agree Spurs can get lost if they are trying to price us out.

Spurs will definitely sell sooner or later (in this window), problem is we go elsewhere and then they sell to a rival (Chelsea for example)

From what I hear, he's back tracked and wants to stay (pertuss knowing he can't get the wages/move he exexpect elsewhere?) but has burnt his bridges a little.

There are recent quotes that say that its up to the club if he stays, not him

Oh, can I please lead the negotiations with Levy on this one?! Let David Gill also have a go for all the times he had to deal with the man that’s tighter than a nun’s habit etc...

Levy really has overdone himself again. Walker who is younger and plays on a position that is harder to find players at cost £45m - What does he do? Asks for 55-60 for Alderweireld who is older and where the other club can find alternatives.

Levy is asking to much for Alderweireld. Maybe it would be better to sign a young CB, and next summer sign him for 25m.

Then go find an alternative. I doubt Levy cares much either way.

Money has gone crazy in todays football, and I'm not really in a position where I can say how much is a correct price. What is certain is that Spurs also operate within the very same market and will need to replace Alderweireld. Ajax is asking for 50m for De Liegt for example, Lindelof cost what, 40 million?

He'll end up here, it's inevitable. This is how these things go.

What is most important to him is probably that he doesn't give in to the wage-demands. It's a snowball that will start rolling if he gives in to the first player revolting: Alderweireld.

Alderweireld must feel a bit imprisoned here - Frozen out for not signing a crappy Levy-contract, then after that struggle, Levy overprices him, which probably makes him stay on unhappy - Personally don't think that keeping an unhappy player has ever worked at any club.

I remember being a kid when our priority after missing out on last old First Division title to Leeds was to get a striker. Our first choice was Shearer. We all know we missed out on him. Our second choice was apparently David Hirst from Sheffield Wednesday. We missed out on him. Damn! We ended up signing some eccentric Frenchman instead.

My point is that sometimes missing on some player can be a silver lining. If we're not getting him, I'm hoping Woodward and Mourinho have a plan B and C.

Hopefully, it's Milan Škriniar.

No other club in the world is going to offer more than 50m for Alderweireld. Seems like Levy is cutting off his nose to spite his face here.
Personally think 50m is a fair deal for Spurs(how many defenders in history have been sold for more and he is 29) and we should look elsewhere like if they are looking for more.

I wouldn't negotiate with Levy and spurs , can't stand him, I understand that he wants the best deal for spurs but he takes the biscuit. if the media were correct that he wanted either martial or rashford on leave loan , I know what I'd say to him down the phone line!

That's because it's us asking. He just doesn't like Utd. Assume it's since Berbatov as he seemed ok to deal with on Carrick from what I can remember.

Fair point. Jonny Evans, 30, went for £3.5 million. Taking into consideration injuries, age, game time over the past 12 months, contract length, there's absolutely no way Alderweireld is worth any where near £50 million. He's worth no more than Chris Smalling and we'd probably only get around £20 million for Mike if we sold him to Arsenal, for instance.

It wouldn't be a great negotiating stance with Levy to say that "we want to sign one of your players, but we won't consider selling you one of ours". Indeed, that would seem purpose-designed to get you nowhere fast.

None of our players would want to go to Spurs though.

Good, we don't need your overpriced, injury prone centre back we have enough of our own.

What's most important to Levy here is that Alderweireld sign the new contract on offer. Not giving in to excessive wages demands is simply a given.

Alderweireld has not been frozen out - he started (or otherwise played) in several games towards the end of last season. Nor is the new contract on offer "crappy" - it's a big increase from the current contract.

But if he won't sign (and he still might) then so be it: Spurs can choose to either sell him now or next summer … it'd simply be a question as to where the balance lies between having his services for another season and having more money from selling him now.

True, 50 million is more than fair for a player who is 29,has had a few injuries and has been out of the team for some time. Also it's common knowledge that he has decided to leave and we may even have an agreement with him.

Spurs do not have much leverage in this situation.
I get the Levy hates united part but at the end of the day, it's a business and Levy is a smart businessman.
No other club would pay close to 55 million plus especially when he can be bought for 25 mill next year. He may get 35-45 million at most from another club. Is his hate towards united worth 10-15 million pounds?

I feel one of the main reasons he's asking for this 55 million plus is because he wants to include Martial in the deal, like a straight swap.
But surely he must realise how dumb it is. Even if the contract situation is similar, Martial is a young attacker who could poteibe one of the best in the world whereas Toby, however good he may be, is at the end of the day a 29 year old CB. You can't compare attackers and defenders.
Also if the logic behind the 55 million plus he is demanding is the price Pool paid for VVD, didn't he have like 6 years left on his contract or something?
Not to mention he is younger and Southampton were pissed off at Liverpool for tapping him up.

I expect us to sign him, it may take a while though, maybe when Levy realizes that Martial is not for sale.
I don't really believe these Lengelt links or a CB not being Mourinho's priority.
Is it pure coincidence that after reports of Spurs demanding a huge sum, news broke that a CB isn't one of our priorities? I don't think so.
I think we have been talking to Toby for a few months now, way before the season ended.
I just don't believe that we suddenly decided to ditch buying a CB altogether.

Evans had a relegation release clause though unless I am completely mistaken. Absolute bargain for any club just under the top 6.

In your opinion ...
None of the players who get serious playing time at United would consider going to Spurs, that would be just mad. Some of the fringe players who have not got as much time on the pitch as they would maybe like could make that move though.

Do you feel Alderweireld is worth 55 million plus, do you truly believe that?
And if you do, how much do you think Martial is worth, going by the same scale as Toby that is

We do need experience in my opinion but it's not absolutely essential. So I think we should pull the plug on the deal, hopefully the metal bit will hit Levy square in the fecking bake -- when next season Arsenal activate his £25 million clause.

Get that Sevilla fella in. He looks a good'un.

Ridiculous money for Alderweireld if the 55m number is true. Plus we only let in 28 goals in the Prem last season (1 more than City who had the best defensive record). Even if we really think Alderweireld will mean we let in only 20 goals next season, we still scored 38 goals less than City, and he won't help in that department.

Attack is our problem, not defense. I'd rather spend 55m on helping our attack.
