The risk is that hes permanently crocked, and if teams aren't convinced he is healthy then they are going to pay him a huge wage.

The market is very soft for him because nobody knows if he is any good anymore.

He's not permanently crocked at all.

He has been fully fit for months, he has not been playing for Spurs due to the contract situation.

He was attrocious when he played (the Leicester match was the worst 90 minutes of football I've seen a Tottenham center half have in close to a decade). He simply hasn't been the same player since his knee injury last season.

I think both his camp and Spurs are hoping someone pays big £££ soon.

I guess we'll find out at the world cup

While Alderweireld has a bigger name, Jamaal Lascelles has been doing really well for Newcastle. Liverpool and Everton are interested according to reports. He can be a Mane/Salah kind of signing for Liverpool.

So, he can go at the end of next season for £25m as he has a release clause that triggers then.

No way we should pay more than £50m for him. I'd rather just wait it out.

We could do with him now, though.

The links have got quiet? Pity, I really want him at O.T!
Levy is seriously ABU and wouldn't sell to us for a sensible fee, hence, perhaps, the £65m + figures quoted in the papers. The Clement Lenglet links keep popping up. I wouldn't be surprised if we've moved on and made him our main center back target.

London Evening Standard write we are still confident of a deal but talks on hold cause Spurs want 55m.

Seems like Levy couldn't give a feck about Poch if he's unwilling to listen to his demand of selling want-out players quickly. We shouldn't offer more than 40m imo, take it or leave it.

It's hard to change what's in your nature. Levy has an asset he KNOWS he can milk more money out of if he plays hard ball long enough. Selling for a reasonable, yet still hefty price would pain him so much he can't bring himself to quite do it yet probably lol.

Let's sign the young Sevilla CB then.
I like Toby but 55m is ridiculous, lets wait 12 months and go again when Spurs aren't even a factor anymore.
We shouldn't be buying within the league anyway, we should be using our financial might to bring in players from Europe from less well off clubs.
By all accounts we could spend 100m on Fred, Degot and the Sevilla player and potentially sort out three troublesome positions for the next 3/4 years.
Why change that approach? 50m for injury plagued Rose, 55m for Toby who Poch doesn't even use anymore, 50m for Aunatovic (sp) for feck sake!
Then Spurs come out with their begging bowl looking for Martial or Juve trying to get Darmian for a round of pints.

We’ll get him I reckon. Sounds like the usual Levy United saga

So Fred and Dalot deals are done, which is the next thread to camp?

This one?

Hope so. We have now added some youth to our defence so it’s time to add experience. Alderweireld is a proper organiser, so it would be great.

Yeah, organiser and also his passing from the back is so good.

I don't see this happening before world cup. Belgium will atleast go to knockouts so I see this dragging out quite a bit

I don't think signing Lenglet alone sorts out our central defensive issues. He's a very good defender, excellent on the ball, what he's not though is a a leader. We've a whole set of central defenders who can be very good on their day but are all prone to lapses in concentration. A leader back there makes them all better, someone who can organise, keep them focused. I like Lenglet but I'd rather get what we need

Indeed, regardless of what Poch wants this'll be a near to deadline deal if it happens at all

Can he? In a year time he can live for 25m and he will be stuck with an unhappy player until than. Unless there is another club ready to pay more, I think we should offer them 40-45m, take it or leave it, our priorities should lie elsewhere anyway.

Exactly. If Levy wants to bring this saga toward the end of the transfer window, then United will have the leverage. We could hold out and just say screw you if you don't want our 40 million now, we'll just get him for 25 mil next season if we are still interested. It all depends on Alderweireld wanting to join United as well because he could easily just move to another team if they offer what Levy wants this season.

Oh I think that's exactly what we should do. I'm saying that I think Levy believes he can extract far more than that.

We should also factor that, there is hardly anyone who can offer as much as we do in wages. Those who can, haven't been mentioned as interested as far as I've read, so Toby himself will want the better deal even if someone offers more to Spurs.

You are right, but pricks like him get their own medicine sooner rather than later.

I would prefer to sign De Ligt this summer, and wait one year to sign Alderweireld for 25m.

I see people mentioning we lack leadership in the back, thus wanting Toby, I agree we lack leaders and characters, but I think we must develop leaders, grow them rather than buy them.

I want him because he has qualities we severely lack. Furthermore, the last thing we need in defence is another "project".

Leadership isn't developed. You either have a player that has this ability or not.

Not a good muppet day what with this and no LB (apparently)

Leaders are developed, leaders are build on their qualities, leadership is one of them. My point was we must find players with leadership qualities while they are young, and develop them, the footballing side together with their characters.

Of course it is.

Do you think some academy graduate is going to walk into a side as it’s captain and leader?

Of course its developed

Not having a dig, but I can't name a single United player who developed leadership skills. Even players who developed skill-wise, never became leaders. Johnny Evans is the one who springs to mind, became a very good CB for us but the leadership skills of an aubergine.

Of course it's not. You can develop consistency, performance, work rate, movement, shooting, passing and basically anything a player learns to do on the pitch, but you can't develop either talent or leadership quality, because it's something in your personality. You either have the ability and strong or calm character to lead the team or not. It has nothing to do with age either. It's part of his personality. Some young players show calm and composed personality that shows they can be leaders, while others not.
