Toby Alderweireld

Some of the comments in here about it have obviously gone way overboard.

However, the thing that hurts Spurs in this situation is how hard you make it for players to leave. With all due respect, if Martial did go to you it would be with the idea of re-establishing himself and pushing himself to the top level, then getting the big move back to one of the giant clubs in a couple of years. I could definitely see him seeing you guys as a good option for the first part, but the problem is he then limits himself where he can move to. Spurs would do everything they could not to sell to another English team, the Italians and Atletico couldn't afford him, Bayern never spend huge amounts, so it'd basically just be Real, Barca or PSG.

If he was looking to go that route, he'd be better off looking to go to one of the other teams that are just below that top echelon. Those other clubs would also quite likely be willing to put in a first option clause for us to be able to buy him back in the future, so we may be happier to sell to them.

The only exception I could see is if he truly does love living in England and doesn't want to leave, but I can't say we've seen any of that attitude with him.

I'm confused by the Spurs paradox that exists amongst other fans - we're both accused of being a "selling club" and simultaneously one that "make(s it hard) for players to leave".

We're no different than any other the other "Top 6" out there; perhaps even anyone in the PL for the most part. It's not like we have had any players want to leave that haven't been shipped out mutually (Walker) or any that are at the club by force. Rather, no one really wants to leave - and those that do, are free to do so in a mutually beneficial way.

Considering both Modric and Bale have come to Spurs as relatively unproven players, then after a few seasons are winning CL at Real, I'd say that Spurs are well-positioned as a club to join to try and win things, and if you do well the worse case is that you'll actually be allowed to lift trophies and earn a wedge at someone like Real.

feck wasting time with levy looking to screw us - whack in a €100m for Skrinar from inter. This guy is the real deal - reminds me so much of Stam

Alderweireld should be going to Levy and telling him he wants to go to Man Utd so make a deal. If he wants to stay in the PL, we are by far his best option. Man City don't want another CB and no other club can match us for wages, not even Chelsea (they're not in the CL next season anyway so why would he go there?). This, coupled with the fact that Pochettino does not want Alderweireld at the club, puts us in a very strong position. The deal is nothing like Carrick, Modric, Berbatov, Bale. Spurs are weak here. We need to be taking advantage and stealing Old Toby for £30-35m. If not, we make a point of coming back next season and taking him for 25. At least that way we send out a message.

AOC had only 1 year left in his arsenal contract(he also refused to renew and want to join liverpool only) and he went to Liverpool for £35M. I don't think £30-35m is a realistic number.

You are missing few details too.

such as??

I don't think AOC is as highly rated as Alderweireld in his position and he went for £35M. So Alderweireld is under similar situation but with a longer contract will go for more than that figure.

I can only see him going to Spurs if Eriksen leaves, so he at least has a shot at that left side spot. Completely different players obviously, but I don't think he'll sign on to play RW.

Otherwise, I can't see him swapping one bench for another.

Eriksen doesn't play on the left though, he either plays centrally or drifting centrally from the right. If he is signed I reckon he will play as part of the front three (changing positions depending on what Poch wants), mostly cutting in from the left, and as back up for Kane when rested/injured.

Age and home grown player.

AOC was 23 when Liverpool signed him. I think 35 Million is not enough but the comparison is way off the mark.

You need to ask the question?Would you sell Kane to United? A direct rival in the same league or Dortmund,Valencia ,Inter Milan?

That's a different question. I asked why those clubs would be better for Martial than Spurs, not which clubs would United prefer to sell him to if they sell.

On what basis would Dortmund, Valencia and Inter Milan be better for him than Spurs?
Dortmund have a better record than you with young players, he would be a guaranteed starter. Valencia are back in the champions league with a manager who loves younger players and he'd be a guaranteed starter. Inter Milan too he'd likely be a guaranteed starter judging from the way they chased after him even though they refused to sale us Persic and they are also back in the UCL. At Spurs he wouldn't start ahead of any of your starting 3. Let alone Lamela or Lucas who are bother more natural wingers than he. So I'm wondering why you actually believe that if he is unhappy at United as the rumours claim because of playing time, he'd happily swap our bench for yours ?

Spurs would be better for him than those clubs.

On the other hand though, getting your next move would be easier from those clubs than Spurs.

If I were a massively talented youngster today there is no chance I would join Spurs without having a release clause firmly in my contract, considering Spurs and Levy's stance on players leaving.

Well, maybe because (for all I know) he'd prefer to stay in the Prem than play in the Bundesliga (for example), might believe that he would break into our starting XI and possibly because we might pay him more than any of the above-mentioned clubs.

If he is leaving for playing time wages will NOT figure in his choice of destination above that. He also wouldn't move to a side where he'd be facing a battle to dislodge established starters. After all that is what he'd be supposedly fleeing from at United. So frankly, apart from the fact your manager has been interested in him since before he signed for us, they is really no good reason why he'd swap our bench for yours. At least in ours Alexis who is directly ahead of him is 29/30. None of your starters are old. Neither are your first choice backs ups

Feels like we need to get this done before Real Madrid's new manager jumps in looking for Nacho upgrades.

"Manchester United’s decision to open the bidding for Toby Alderweireld at £50 million may come back to haunt them. Reports from England claim that the Belgian defender’s representatives have now presented Spurs with a new wage offer. It’s very possible that Tottenham may now hold on to their world-class defender.

Originally, Alderweireld’s representatives were looking to secure a deal paying their client somewhere in the neighborhood of £160 thousand per week. That amount is way out of Tottenham’s price range. Paying a central defender more than Harry Kane was a non starter for Daniel Levy and company.

It seems that Alderweireld has found it difficult to conjure up clubs willing to meet his wage demands. It’s even been rumoured that United balked at his asking price. Now they are offering Spurs the chance to re-sign him for a deal that would just eclipse £100 thousand per week ...."

Are they reliable? Because every other article out there is saying the complete opposite.

I don't really understand this because whoever the CB is we buy will definitely be on more wages than Alderweireld (definitely over 160k+ going by recent signings) and I'm not so sure the asking price would be that much different either. However Alderweireld is an established world class defender.

The article contains a tweet that quotes the sun, if that's where they got their information from then I doubt there's much in it.

They may end up doing us a favor in all honesty, we don't get Alderweireld and we go and spend those 50m on a younger CB like Skriniar/De Ligt/Pavard. I have nothing against that.

The dream signing of the window but it seems Inter have no interest in selling at all. I'm quite happy with Alderweireld though, we've got plenty of CB's around their early 20's. Alderweireld seems like the ideal fit going with our squad composition, only thing is Skriniar seems to be playing beyond his years, can already tell he's going to become an elite CB.

Good a player as he is, if we are going to pay much more than £50m I'd prefer we look for someone else. He's a very good CB, but he's not one of the greats of the game.

Our central defence isn't bad (especially fit & on form), and if we could use an extra £50m to compete for world class players in the midfield, left back or right wing positions. If we could add a right winger who scores 20 goals a season we'd have less of a need for clean sheets.

Inter are playing with 4 at the back under Spalletti, and they have brought in De Vrij already. That leaves them with 3 world class center backs in De Vrij, Miranda and Skriniar. Of course they want to communicate that Skriniar is not for sale in order to increase his price, but I think they will let him go if the right offer comes in.

What a rubbish source, makes the metro look like the bbc. Utter garbage, Toby could stay but more likely will be moved on now.

Lads can anyone tell me have any reliable sources reported this? This is my dream signing and I don’t know if there is anything concrete enough to have my hopes up all summer.

I find it hard to believe Ed Woodward would baulk at paying a player £160k per week. Considering how much we are paying the likes of Pogba, Sanchez etc. and especially when even squad players like Lingard, Fellaini, Shaw and Jones are on salaries comparable to Liverpool & Spurs top earners.

I suspect the price we are baulking at paying is the fee that Spurs want. The problem is I can't see anyone except for us willing to pay the wages Alderweireld wants and none of which will pay more than £50m. Hence we're likely to be at an impasse for a lot of the summer.

I'd cut our losses and say Spurs want too much.

Yeah United deciding the fee is too much for a 29 year old player with (i believe) only 1 year left on his contract, that i can buy. But not the wages part.

Was watching a few short clips of some of our matches over the weekend. I can't for the life of me understand why some say we don't need this guy. The speed we move the ball from back to front is criminal. He won't solve everything but he'll help a lot, along with another two new fullbacks.

The risk is that hes permanently crocked, and if teams aren't convinced he is healthy then they are going to pay him a huge wage.

The market is very soft for him because nobody knows if he is any good anymore.

Exactly and it's a shit source.
