Toby Alderweireld

Yeah I am on a Spurs Forum too with over 10,000 posts :D. I'm on here because most of my mates support United and I see the Caf as not just a United forum. I honestly think its a better place for having more than just United fans. Oh and I have a 2 hour commute most days so I have plenty of free time .

Look I am not judging you or anything let alone suggesting you should be kicked out. I resisted the urge of doing that with far more aholes than you lot, most were United fans. However Im curious of why do that. Thanks for replying to my curiosity.

Given his injury woes this past season and time left on the contract I wouldn't pay more than 45 for him. But Levy is a cretin and you just know he will try and extort us and then later in the window will chuck in lowball offers for Shaw/Martial.

We'll get £20 million for Martial and Levy will demand £80 million for Toby. Trouble is clubs see our desperation.

That's just bullshit. We looked like zombies under Van Gaal, but Mourinho constantly being accused of parking the bus by a certain group of people doesn't come out of thin air. Surely you remember that there have been plenty of games where we were 1-0 up and just dropped deep and let the opponents have the ball from the 60th minute mark onwards under Mourinho.
People accused us of parking the bus against Chelsea. People are stupid. we are nowhere near as defensive under Mourinho than van Gaal.

What desperation? We had one of the best defensive records in the league last season. We're augmenting our defense with a player like Alderweireld not desperately trying to replace players.

Apart from Ronaldo, when was the last time WE got a good price for a player.

Yes, They went over the top for Berbatov, and others that we were interested in they rose the price ridiculously.Levy would love to squeeze more out of us.

Not really seeing how its personally against us. City faced the same thing when getting Walker.

Selling within the league generally comes with a premium, and since Spurs are going for top 4 regularly we are also their rivals.

Fairly sensible article which should calm the nerves here.

Basically says two things, there's no chance of Spurs getting 75m for Toby and if they insist on Martial in the deal, then United could walk away from the deal. United don't want to sell Martial to a domestic club least of all.

Decent article but it's Ducker, I don't think there's a single English journo out there who's least bit clued into our transfer activity. Kyle Walker went for £45m + £5m in addons last summer and he was 3 years younger than him and in a position where real quality is very hard to find. I just can't wrap my head around the fact they'd demand 2x/3x the price for what a player would be available next summer. Also while Alderweireld is a good defender, @vadimivich raised an interesting point, he has looked shell of a player whenever he's played this year. Don't know if that's down to motivation or he's physically struggling. It's a similar situation to Sanchez, both have had a meticulous fitness record but their body has lot of mileage in last 3-4 years and I worry if we'd find ourselves in a situation where Alderweireld is not the same CB many were hoping to expect.

I hope we're careful with our spending this summer, last summer we needed a wide player more but for some reason we dropped £40m on Lindelof and as it turned out we didn't have enough left to pay what was required for Perisic. This year with both Carrick and Fellaini (hopefully) gone we need at least 2 CMs in addition to 2 FBs. I'd hate us to get rinsed for Alderweireld and then not be able to sign players in the area which are more pressing.

I think if there is a realistic chance of us getting Martial, negotiations would go much more smoothly. What do you want Levy to do? "Oh hello Woody, here have Toby for £40M and thanks for taking him off our hands".
But he has a history of this. Its OK living up to the moniker of being a tough negotiator but then he bids 25m for Martial last summer and expects a positive response?
Chelsea didn't slap on 30m or drag out a transfer to the last for Matic and that makes it more likely that they can conclude a deal for Martial if we do sell.

Di Maria.
PSG were robbed.

Edit Ronaldo wasn't even a good price. That should have been an earth shattering, Neymar type deal.

I haven't been following this - does it genuinely seem like we're after him? What are the rumours/sources?

It'll get done for about 50-55 which is still massive but it's the way of the world now.

Glaston won't be happy.

I actually think they don't really have any leverage. The player wants to leave, if they don't sell now they are unlikely to play him in the first XI next season instead of continuing to develop Sánchez and he'll then leave for peanuts. They also want to do their business early and they're not known to have a lot of money to spend so they're likely to want any outgoings to happen at the earliest opportunity. And, of course, we can look elsewhere.

If we pay anything more than 50m max we are complete fools.

I agree with all that.

Agreed. Don't see why he wouldn't just let his contract run down and sign for less in January or next summer.

His contract isn't quite that simple.

Officially, it ends 30 June 2019, but there is the option for another year. If that option is taken, there's a buy out clause of £25m, but that clause is only valid for up to 2 weeks before the transfer window closes (which is now even shorter). So, if he stays, there's nothing to be gained for selling him for any sort of bargain price (less) in January. In theory, if he stays, I expect the club would activate the extension in the first half of the season to prevent him agreeing a free in January to a non-FA team.

By the time anyone signs him for £25m, he has a season less left in him. It also gets very Alexis-Sanchez by that point, where any savings in transfer fee are seemingly expected to be pocked by the player/agent anyway.

I suppose the more philosophical question would be as to whether he would be worth the difference in transfer fee by what he would/could offer to another team by signing now, as opposed to in some 12 months time.

There's a problem with the concept of this.

Technically, when does a club ever get a good price (however that is judged) for a player unless the club doesn't want to sell. With that in mind, the question really should be "When was the last time Utd were forced to sell a player they wanted to keep", at which point the answer is really only ever going to be Ronaldo, and even before then - who else?

As a Spurs fan, what has helped us is having a boardroom where we have crept up the ladder of the league by saying "Ok, we accept we're not able to force you to stay, so you can leave - but on our terms". This is why Carrick came at a price, Berbatov came at a price, Bale came at a price etc. The only one I think we (Spurs) actually sold too cheap was possibly Modric, but at the time I don't think anyone valued him as much as they should have. That's not to say that Daniel Levy hasn't got a knack for selling turds for gold - £18m for Kevin Wimmer was particularly impressive.

You can look at these things retrospectively and say that getting £24m back for Schneiderlin has worked out to be good business!

Good player but a tad bit overrated on here. £50m on him when we have so many more pressing concerns would be madness really.

We just need Rojo and Bailly to be fit next season and they're as good as Aldereweireid. Save the cash and spend it on some wide forwards and full backs.

£75m seems... a hell of a lot, even in this insane transfer era

We should use Shaw as leverage if Spurs do really want him.40m + Shaw will be a good deal for both sides.

Ermmm, nope

Can't imagine that's any reflection of reality. 29 isn't old, but next year he'll be 30 and available for just £25m... Probably (as others have said) includes wages, signing bonus, agents fees etc. It's hard to think of a defender that wouldn't be available for £75m.

The new Mirror article today which says we hope to wrap up both Fred and Toby is now saying £45M. The same newspaper has dropped £30M in one day lol.

Being a football journalist is the best job in the world.
You get to watch football all day, every day;you get to meet footballers and you can write whatever you want 55 million, 75 million, whatever comes to your mind.
Man, I really regret my career decision

How would you describe a midfielder who scored 6 goals and made 16 assists in 36 matches despite playing so deep most of the time? I suggest you go past the hype of failed frustrated managers tend pundits whose got a clear agenda against Paul Pogba.

Berg was NOT a regular started during the treble winning season. Johnsen and Stam were our first choice CB with Gaz and Irwin at the rear flanks

Don't forget Pogba also spent two months out with injury.

I think this will get done sharpish. Poch signing his new contract indicates his demand have been met, which includes players being sold sooner rather than later in the window.

That depends on how much we get for Toby and which new CB we bring into the club. If sign de Ligt (for example) for around the same amount of money, then it could well be a short-term loss in exchange for longer-term gain.
