Toby Alderweireld

Levy's tactics must be working, because logically 30 million is already a lot and anything above that is crazy money. Maybe in some alternative universe we could give them Blind + some cash.

You're nuts. Toby is one of the best defenders in Europe.

It's pretty obvious we're not goint to be interested in United reserves either like Jones, Smalling and Blind. I always find it amusing when United fans suggest that sort of thing.

I think what works in our favour here is Pochettino.

He seems to have a good influence on Levy and I gather he wants quick sales of outgoing players. Presumably he wants to be able to get on with his own business and not hang around all summer while Levy plays games.

If Alderweireld isn’t going to sign a new contract then Spurs want to sell him. I genuinely don’t think they care where he goes. I’d expect £40million will see it done.

Perfectly fair for Levy to ask for an insane figure like this obviously - the important thing is that we don’t even entertain that type of nonsense.

I’m not that fussed whether we sign him or not TBH, so I’d say we put a limit of say £40m on the deal, with £5-10m of that being add-ons. He’s a quality player obviously, but if Levy won’t deal then I’d spend the money elsewhere.

Waste of money. Sign De Ligt for a fraction and move on to more important matters.

Alderweireld will probably end up costing less than De Ligt (City are apparently bidding around £60m). But I'd rather get the latter if we were to sign a centre half this summer.

Suspect this is what will happen, Alderweireld's head is turned as well and there isn't much competition for him from the 4 major European clubs that could threaten us for him.

I'm gonna call this now, you will get him for minimum £50-55M and most Spurs fans with be that bothered by that fee and you will have a very good CB.

No denying his talent but that seems too much for a CB with one year left on his contract who wants away, try 40-45mil.

We definitely need an experienced and PL proven head in our back-line. Give them our least pretty head in Jones and £25m.

Unfortunately, I don't think Levy is that stupid on buying Jones. If we offer him Smalling, he might bite, though.

You have to ask yourself why Spurs - a CL qualified club with ambitions of challenging for the league, would entertain the idea of giving up one of their best defenders and replace him with De Ligt, who is 11 years younger than Alderweirled. If De Ligt is a better option them why don't we just buy him instead and pay one fee now for a player who could stay with us for 10-15 years.

If this is true, this would be just another baffling transfer saga where the club would endure yet more ridicule for paying 30M over the top for a good player, but is he really in the top 10 Centre Backs currently playing in World Football?

For the record VVD (26) was 70M + 5M (who is in the top 10 CB's in World football) the 5M will only be paid by Liverpool if they win the CL, which ofcourse we all hope does not happen!

L Bonnuci (30) last year transferred for 31M and was widely considered one of the top 5 Centre Backs in World Football alongside Ramos, Boatang, Chielini and D Godin.
Jose, right now has more than enough to deal with by getting a tune out of Sanchez and Pogba and surely would not want to make the same mistake again by overpaying with high wages or an inflated Transfer Fee for a player that's been out most of the season with an injury.

Plus more importantly would an injury plagued CB really be the Elite signing and leader the club needs and at £75M does he represent better value than any of the following;

1. J Boatang (30) - probably available at £50M
2. S Umtitti (24) - Available at £53M
3. Tiago Silva (32) - probably available at £30M
4. R Varanne (26) - Probably available at £60M
5. K Koulibay (28) - probably available at £70M
6. Jamar Laceylles (24) - Newcstle probably take £45M

This deal has some merit but we should tap the player up with a wage offer of 140K per week, four year contract and tell him to demand a transfer to United but the club are only prepared to pay at double next years transfer value of 45M. If Levy says no then tell the player to just see out a season at spurs in which case we will pay the 22M next year and give him a 3 year contract for 180k per week!

Woodward needs to teach Levy a lesson, it's no good being the richest club in the World if your CEO doesn't know how to wield the power.

Why are Spurs selling Toby - Toby won't sign a new deal and so they have no choice but to sell him.Maybe we already have some agreement with Toby and so we are negotiating with Spurs.

Why are Spurs interested in signing De Ligt - because he is obviously the best young defender out there. Add that to the fact that they have had a lot of success with young players from the Dutch league.

Why aren't we going for De Ligt - because we already have two 23 year old CBs in Bailly and Lindelof.
We have two 20 year olds coming back from loan in Tuanzebe and TFM.
We do not have a fixed CB pairing unlike Spurs. Spurs have the luxury of slowly integrating a youngster into their squad whereas we need our new CB to come in and hit the ground running.
Spurs already have an experienced, ball playing, calm leader at the back in Jan, but we do not have anyone.
The level of performance are we expecting from our new CB is very high, asking an 18 year moving from a much easier league to be the foundation of a CL challenging defense is not the best plan.

Also currently De Ligt is not a better option and there is no guarantee that he would stay with us for 10-15 years.

I do see how talented De Ligt is but unless we are selling 2 of our senior CBs and maybe TFM, I don't really want him as I would like us to see give a few chances to Tuanzebe as he was really good whenever he played for us.

Is he really though?

I must admit that I've only seen him play about a dozen or so times, mainly against United or at international level but from my limited time watching him he wouldn't even be the best centre-back at United.

We just bought two prospects in Bailly and Lindelof. How did that work out? What if de Ligt is exactly like them, then we will be stuck with 6 CBs doing a merry-go-round for the 2 CB positions every game.

Just because a player is young and shows potential does not mean he will make it. We have bought one such player in Bailly. Now we need someone proven -- a 27-30 yr defender who can be a leader and is also world class or close to it (not Smalling for sure).

The only concern I have with 'Weed is his injury problems. Don't want him sitting out half the season. Otherwise the deal makes sense, though Spurs are obviously ripping us off if the 75 mil price is true.

That's precisely the point. We bought CBs in consecutive years and its literally the last position other than keeper we need to prioritize this summer. If necessary invest in a top young talent who can contribute for a decade or more in the Rio mold. Mourinho clearly doesn't have two consistent CBs - more like 5 players who rotate based on form and availability so there is no guarantee Alderweireld would play consistently if he came.

CB is not priority but it is a concerning position for us despite the 5 options we have. Mourinho has made mistakes in the market. We are conceding goals and Lindelof shouldn't have been bought when we had Bailly, rather someone like Toby should have been bought. He is simply correcting that mistake.

Toby-Smalling would be a consistent pairing next season if this happens, I reckon, with the others getting some opportunities now and then.

There's no chance that Toby will go for VdV price. Spurs don't have much leverage here.

We're not conceding goals. We had the 2nd best defensive record in the league. You can argue that De Gea was part of that but the fact remains we conceded far less than Spurs, Pool, Chelsea, and Arsenal. That's always going to be the case because of Mourinho's tactics. Our lack of success this year had nothing to do with CBs and everything to do with an anemic attack, which should be the number one priority.

40m + add on based on appearances. We shouldn't go for more than that unless someone else outbids us.

The only way this deal will make sense is if all 26 year old+ leave. If Smalling, Jones and Rojo can't lead the defence then it makes sense for Toby to come and them to leave. After that, we bring back Tuanzebe and possibly some other young CB and keep Bailly and Lindelof.

Simply because Spurs can't afford to pay him the salary that a top class defender would be looking for, coupled with the fact that they can't afford to let him leave for £25m next Summer.

Spurs' business model is to buy or develop young players who are paid a relatively low salary, develop then into much better players and sell them on when they prove themselves as top class and demand the salary to match.

They don't have the resources to "have aspirations of challenging for the league", their only aspiration at this point is towing the fine line between investing enough money in fee's and wages to remain in the CL, whilst being profitable enough to service their huge imminent debt.

With Alderweireld they can't afford to offer him a £160k weekly contract as Erikson, Alli, Kane, Lloris, Verthonghen etc would all be demanding at least the same. Therefore from their point of view swapping him with a player like De Ligt who is much riskier but who'd also accept a third of that salary makes great financial sense.

From a squad point of view it's a clear drop in quality though and is very risky.

Its a given that he would make higher wages here, but I don't see anything special about him to where he should command 160, even here. That's twice what our current highest paid defender (Smalling) makes and is more than double what Alderweireld currently makes at Spurs. He's just not good enough to be on highest wage in the league for a defender imo.

You keep saying "prioritize" like Ed is only capable of doing one deal at a time. That's not how it works. We'll have multiple balls being juggled. Moving for Toby doesn't change anything with any of the other deals.

We don't concede many because we play a low defensive block, are well organised as a unit, and don't take many risks. Do you think LvG built a great defence too? Or was it that he had his CBs pass the ball 5 yards to each other all match and attempt to have 90% possession every game? There's having a great defence, and then there's utilising a style which nullifies an opponent while not allowing any creative freedom for yourself. City conceded less than us, but scored 40 more. It's not about not conceding goals, it's about the ability to build from the back. Read this about Toby's influence on Spurs' attacking and you'll understand why we'd want to replace those 2 clodding hoofers with him https://www.fourfourtwo.com/feature...st-important-player-and-his-absence-proves-it

In the mirror today he’s rated at £75m.... Why we ever try to negotiate with Levy is beyond me.

Walk away there are far better CBs at significantly less money (even at £40m) at a younger age.

Remember when Pogba’s fee ranged from 145m plus agent fees to 120m plus agent fees only to turnout that we paid 100m including agent fees and stuff.

Spurs aren’t doing this because they want to. They are doing this because they don’t have a choice. If Toby signed a contract, they would rather that than signing De Ligt.

If you believe mirror then everything is doom and gloom

If Alderweireld is the one José wants then we should just pay what it takes. Transfer fees are so stupid now they’re almost irrelevant. If he works it’s value for money regardless of how much paid. If he doesn’t then it’s a waste of money regardless of how much paid. Other names have been mentioned that might cost the same or less but are they as gettable as Alderweireld? Also, this idea he’s injury plagued...he’s had one serious injury in his entire time at Spurs and along with Van Dijk is the best centre back in the league, easily. That comes at a price.

Didn't know about this £29million release clause that gets triggered next summer.
Bit of a game changer.

If Spurs genuinely ask for £70 odd million, then I think we can get someone equally as good/better for cheaper.

I think he'd be a great signing but £75m for a 29 year is too much.

We're spending fortunes on 'old' players which is starting to get worrying.
