Toby Alderweireld

Thats marking. He's also given the toughest assignments on set piece duty and the offensive player always gets a run on the ball, so a good quality of cross means they always have the advantage over the defender. He can still do better sometimes than he does on set pieces, could probably use his body a bit better to block that run at the ball but thats another thing that can lead to a foul like the shirt holding.

Yeah I agree mostly but attackers don’t have the advantage it is defenders that have the advantage. Hence the reason forwards have to try and move to head the ball and we see most set pieces cleared. Quality of cross I get especially if it’s low and flat that can alter things but for the most part it’s still advantage to the defender. Smalling has been caught out a few times with marking, he either is not close enough or gets too tight and gets rolled (Kane plays on this with him). We lost a couple of notable goals over the years from him getting too tight. The Spurs one this year (or was it last season) you could actually see Jose do his nut about it on the bench afterwards with Rui. I like Smalling but he’s not without his faults though and marking and in possession can be considered weaknesses in his game but then we could do that for most centre backs in the epl to be fair. Not a great standard at the moment and a lot of them cost a fortune (Mangala £57m, Laporte £60m Stones £50m) are jaw dropping amounts for guys of this quality. VVD was also a ridiculous price although I rate him the best in the league and he’s worth £75m to Liverpool but it’s ridiculous to think the Pogba price gets quoted all the time when defenders are going for near enough the same price range.

If the cross matches the run of a player, the defender has no chance with a standing jump. So its about whether the two players can get it right.

Never really got the impression he's an organiser tbh.

Yep. I’m not seeing a player that’s any better than our current bunch of (very good) defenders. Swap him in for Rojo by all means, but I wouldn’t expect fireworks.

Strange that Romero has conceded very few goals when starting for United. 16 goals conceded in 38 matches in all competitions. 2 goals in 7 matches in the PL.

Alderweireld would be a strange use of transfer funds and space on the wage bill. He has already rejected a salary offer from Spurs that is close to what United pay our central defenders. 29 and missed a big chunk of this season. Plays in a team that uses a completely different system to us.

If you're going to use Romero's record then you need to consider the opposition he plays against

Yeah I agree but you are missing the bit out before that (the important part). Where you have to get touch tight and block/check/delay their run to stop this. If the defender does this properly it’s not a foul and the attacker has very little chance. So if the defender is switched on the attacker no matter how good he is, should not get near scoring regardless how good the ball is. Ramos at Madrid is an absolute master of this.

I actually don’t think our system is or will be very different to Spurs next season.

They play a 4231 like we do, they play with wingbacks who push high to give width like we most likely will do next season. They play 2 dms with one defensive minded (Dier or Wanyama for them/Matic for us) and one who can bring the ball forward (Dembele/Fred or whoever we sign).

They play one inside forward on the left (Son/Sanchez) and one playmaker on the right who drifts into the middle (Eriksen/Lingard or Mata). One no 10 who makes late runs into the box (Alli/Pogba who’s started to do that for us) and then one complete forward who scores and contributes to build up (Kane/Lukaku).

In terms of the defence they play one pacy stopper (Sanchez for them, Bailly for us) and then one cb who can bring the ball out from the back (Vertonghan/Lindelof or ???)

Taking all that into account then it makes a lot of sense getting in Toby. If Lindelof isn’t ready or good enough then Toby would definitely be a great signing and would fit our system well.

Depends where the run is from. If its from deeper you cant have your best CB in the air around the edge of the box, leaving the box vulnerable

So what is the likelihood of this deal actually going through? Have any reliable sources reported it?

When defending a set piece everyone is a defender buddy.

Yep piss poor defensively for us but why am I being asked to explain his poor defending? Not sure what you are meaning?

That he clearly wasnt a defender :D More like an attacker for the opposition. And De Gea isnt a defender at set pieces either, else he wouldnt be able to use his hands

Why aren't City interested in him? I think he's a really perfect fit in Pep's playing system and a great replacement for Kompany

They can't keep stockpiling sky high priced centre backs. Laporte, Otamendi, Stones for three. Kompany still around as well. Is Mangala still hanging about?

It’s not that tricky of a name to spell. You can just call him Toby anyway!

Nobody knows. The links to CBs, and fullbacks could all be fabricated nonsense - we may not even be looking to sign players in those positions. All we know is that we'll sign a midfielder to replace Carrick, because the manager said so. Beyond that, we're in the dark.

I've been thinking you would start playing with wingbacks and push them higher for a while now, but it hasn't really happened yet, and imo it is one of the main reasons you have an excellent defensive record while also being more predictable in attack. So I'm not as sure as you are that you will push them up next season.

We don’t push them up because we don’t have the players to play that role. When both your fullbacks are 32 you can’t really expect them to be complete box to box wingbacks

Even for prime players Poch still heavily rotates his fullbacks and it’s why he always has 2 players for each fullback position. It’s an extremely demanding role physically and Young and Valencia are simply too old to do it. Look at how much a difference it made to City replacing their ageing fullbacks, we’ll definitely push them higher and it will have a big affect tactically for us when we get younger and better guys in

I agree, in my head it was a position I thought you would target for quite a few windows in a row, just like I thought you would buy a CM during the latter Fergie years. We'll see though you may do it this window.

Smalling made a few, Jones a little bit more but you'll find that from all the CBs out there. There is no CB who doesn't make a mistake now and again. Smalling managed it for most of the first half of the season though before he did have a couple of off games

What a surprise... Jones again. And yes every CB makes mistakes, but have you been reading what I say. Smalling and Jones are prone to making them, that lead to goals from the opponent as well. Neither of them are improving. They are CBs we don't need in our team, they aren't good enough for Man Utd. You can't compare Alderweireld and Bailly with Smalling and Jones. That's the difference between pushing for the title and coming 2-4th.

Have you been watching over the course of the season? We've conceeded very few goals from open play. And yes a couple of them are Jones' fault, just like today where he was exposed by a top player making use of what they are good at. I've never suggested that he cant be improved upon.

But how the feck are you blaming Smalling as well? Talk about agenda posting.

To play Jones and Smalling ahead of Bailly is just insane. Mourinho got what he deserved there.

Watched practically every game apart from when I've been at work. And ur also misreading what I'm saying... Again. I said he hasn't improved not whatever ur suggesting. We've conceded very few goals thanks to De Gea Making absolutely class saves... Did I ever blame Smalling for that goal as well? No I said he makes mistakes just like Jones. A CB pairing with Alderweireld and Bailly would fix these problems and if your suggesting otherwise ur delusional.

You lumped him in with your complaint about Jones after talking about Jones mistake today. Yes, you made it about Jones and Smalling not just Jones.

And yes Smalling has improved a lot from the youngster we signed from Fulham who's main claim to fame was doing quite well for a young lad against Chelsea where he scored an own goal. He's now one of the best defenders in the country. On the ball he hasnt improved much I guess.

Bailly has made more mistakes this season than Smalling so it makes no sense whatsoever. You just have your prefered players and are trying to shape the truth around making your prefered players out to be better than they are.

Smalling is fine - fewer errors than Jones and Bailly. Pair him with Alderweireld.

I included Smalling from the start what are you actually on about?? BEFORE THIS MATCH... I was just saying he's prone to making mistakes as well. Can you understand that? No idea how you can say Bailly hasnt been solid this season. He has made no wear near as many mistakes as Smalling. My guess is you support whatever Mourinho goes by.

Bailly would've prevented the goal in this match it he was in that situation without a doubt, and if u say otherwise u clearly gaventh watch any games this season

Well you just proved that you're full of shit. How the hell could you possibly know that? Do you have a crystal ball? What are next week's lottery numbers?

Bailly has pace. He would've kept up with Hazard and he's better under pressure. Hazard wouldn't have made it into the penalty box. Bailly would've been at better match. Do you all of a sudden believe Jones is the best defender on Earth? Just look at social media comments - flooded with fans asking why Jones started over Bailly. This is why we need Alderweireld, Bailly is injury prone and Jones needs to go.

Bailly is also extremely rash and has been caught out several times this season because of that. Plus its literally impossible to know what you're claiming you know. You dont, you made it up in your mind

Need to get Toby in.

Can't have another season of Jones and his ugly mug.

After seeing him linked to both us and Chelsea recently I wonder how much that result could impact any decision.

And some people say they don't want him because he's 29? I'd fecking take him If he was 59 because he'd still be an improvement
