That my friends is literally a death trap.
Holy hell.
That my friends is literally a death trap.
David Pogue, who went on board, reported that he read a waiver that described the submersible as an "experimental" vessel, "that has not been approved or certified by any regulatory body, and could result in physical injury, disability, emotional trauma or death".
OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush then gave him a tour of the submersible, where he revealed the vessel only has one button and is run using a video game controller.
Dunno.Has old Elon weighed in with any hot takes/solutions for this yet?
Feck.Yeah feck that.

You're right on helicopters and small planes being more fatal than commercial planes, but the deadliest form of travel remains car travel.
No offence but I find statements like yours odd. It could be an age or generational thing. I’m 50 and enjoy doing things that are unique because of the experience I have. Not to impress others. Not to take and post photos. Only because I’ll be dead soon and experiences are way more valuable to me than anything I could own. Harding is a renowned explorer first and foremost, so I could imagine he feels similarly. I doubt he is somebody who posts just to brag. You have a point. I guess the thing that puts me off is that this is one of these things people do just to be able to say they did them.

I think the suspicion is that it points to either a catastrophic failure or a total loss of power (assuming the transponder requires power).Do these two things occurring seem sketchy or am I overthinking this?
What are they discovering or exploring though? A shipwreck that’s so well located, that they take tourists down there is hardly a discovery. No offence but I find statements like yours odd. I’m wondering if they are fine and just decided to continue the tour before returning to the surface, despite losing means of communication. That would be a dick move but I wouldn’t exclude it considering how rarely these dives take place.
They’re discovering what a piece of crap they’re trusting their lives inWhat are they discovering or exploring though? A shipwreck that’s so well located, that they take tourists down there is hardly a discovery.
Apparently they had several 'manual' means of returning to the surface, you would have thought these would be initiated if there was a power loss during the dive. Sadly seems to suggest a catastrophic failure is more likely. The suspicion is that it points to either a catastrophic failure or a total loss of power (assuming the transponder requires power).

It’s a very subjective experience in the same way somebody may love watching 22 people chasing a ball and others will never understand the appeal. Just because you don’t feel it doesn’t mean others don’t either. What are they discovering or exploring though? A shipwreck that’s so well located, that they take tourists down there is hardly a discovery.
I don’t understand why you would want to visit what is essentially a mass grave deep under the sea in person. Especially considering the view of it is no better/likely worse than what you would get by using a remote submersible with cameras.
Also the reaction to a maximum of five (rich) people, however tragic, is massively over the top when you compare it to the indifference in coverage of migrant crossing deaths.
Until we know the fate I guess it's a bit of a shrodinger's submersible. But from what I've seen most are having a joke with it for now, obviously changes if they die.
But it's definitely being treated as less serious than a migrant tragedy from what I can see. It's of the same ilk as the Thai cave boys, it's just interesting because of the scenario at play.
There’s a live updates page on the BBC updating us with information that can only be guessing. How’s that not disproportionate coverage?
Who has heard of the diving bell accident? There were some workers on an oil rig, or something, way, way deep into the ocean and a worker didn’t follow the correct process before opening the chamber door and two of them (including him) literally exploded from the pressure
I guess. It's because it's a unique situation. The news will always gravitate to that over 'another' migrant boat sinking unfortunately.

This boat disaster has 500 people still unaccounted for, 100 of which are children, and only five articles related to the actual disaster on the BBC.

HBO has a drama series about that... The Investigation.
if i was on the submarine i would have survived and piloted it back to the surface. rip to them but im built different
Didn't some Scottish fans go to the world cup in 78 in a sub? Or did I dream that?
I didn’t know about that but I shouldn’t be surprised, such a crazy sad story,
I might give it a watch
You’ve got that dog in you
It’s a mixture of this and the type of situation. Migrant crossing deaths involve too much politics and difficult discussions for the media and the general public whereas this unique situation absolves anyone of that feeling.
The dead sleep in the [sea], the living must stay atop it.
Also we must mourn our betters
Obviously nobody sane loves a billionaire but it's still a terrifying situation to be in, regardless of the stupidity/money to burn aspect of this. I find it hard to believe someone could have so much empathy for human life with regards to migrants but not so much here. It's still people with families.
Yeah I get what you mean, and I do have empathy for them, obviously I would prefer it not to be a news story because they went to the titanic and came back fine. I just find it all so absurdly opulent; haven’t they got better things to spend their money on?

Non of significance. Which is what I meant earlier when I said that all this is just happening so a bunch of rich people can tell others they’ve been there. They can’t see shit, they can’t do shit, they don’t explore shit. They just dive somewhere, get some bad looks into a huge piece of metal and then happily tell the peasants how life changing this was. That craft looks horrible. What sort of view would you even get from that if any?
I think it sounds cool. A lot more interesting than going to space and people never seem to find it weird that people fancy that.Non of significance.
