Tiemoue Bakayoko

How did this turn into a Keane v Carrick contest? To be honest that isn't even a contest. Keane was the complete midfielder. It's not even close.

I blame @Adnan, we were talking about how a midfield with Bakayoko could do the trick without someone like Carrick and he said that he would take a midfielder like Keane over one like Carrick. Basically a complete box to box over a deep lying playmaker, I told him that someone like Keane was rare and provided everything you need from a Carrick and added a little bit more, to summarize Bakayoko isn't Keane and probably will never be.

How come we want him now? I thought Fabinho was the best midfielder Monaco has, and we were previously linked with him.

It is perplexing because he is one of the rare players who could potentially play next to Pogba in a midfield two.

Duncan castles said in his previous article that Monaco are reconsidering their stance. Is it possible? They are a selling club tbh?

Duncan Castle is probably lying.

Selling clubs don't work like that, they don't sell players for the sake of selling them, they plan the sales. Today one of the attacking midfielders could leave, someone like Lemar or Bernardo Silva, because Monaco already have their replacements. In center midfield only Moutinho could leave because he isn't needed the other players don't have cover and won't be replaced this winter.

So Bakayoko will probably be free to go this summer but not this winter because he can't be replaced and Monaco wants to win.

I think the likely story here is Utd want him and other clubs are starting to make moves, therefore, the sudden "change in stance" is more pushing to negotiate now for a deal in the summer.

He is probably lying, the "sudden" change has been reported almost a month ago(the 17th) by the Times when they said that Chelsea intended to spend Oscar's money on Bakayoko. From France the words are that Monaco aren't selling this winter and he came out to say that he wasn't interested by a move this winter, obviously you can't believe the words of a player.

In fairness, if anyone would know the transfer plans for both United and Monaco it would be Castles.

I'm fairly sure that RMC will know before him. And Castle has been wrong a lot this summer, Mata was supposed to leave the club.

same info as castles, probably got it from him too. I think we arent signing anyone unless someone bids for our summer targets or an exceptional situation (injury) arises. Chelsea are more interested in kessie and city in rakitic so it should be a straighht forward purchase unless monaco act like cnuts

I would be very surprised to see this happening in January. I can see it being a tough deal during the summer as well to be honest, though hopefully Im wrong and he is holding up a United jersey next week.

Castles saying this lad is like Matic but with even more power. Fair comment?

Looks excellent from the various clips I've seen, but not seen anything else.

I think this is likely to happen in January. Word is that we'd have let Schneiderlin go in the summer had we got our hands on Kante. The fact that we're now letting Schneiderlin go suggests that we have a midfield transfer lined up. If not Bakayoko, I don't know who else since we haven't really been linked strongly with any other midfielders.

In short, we'll get this guy now.

Wouldn't be surprised if we move for a midfielder now that the Schneiderlin deal is nearly done.

I don't think we had too many midfielders per se (especially in a 4-3-3) but now we can free up a spot on the bench without causing disharmony.

Didn't Mourinho say yesterday he could have done with Morgan staying to play a few games here and there but he asked to leave? Something like that.

Anyway my point is I think he'all replace him in January.

BBC reporting that now Morgan's gone, we'll move for Bakayoko this month.

I hope we do move for him now. He has insane potential and could end up being Herrera upgrade in the long term, or moulded for more defensive position. Either way we need one more proper option in the midfield for the second part of the season. Just look at our schedule after that Stoke game on 21st and through February and beyond.. From the very next game after that we'll be constantly playing every 3-4 days, with only pauses being during international breaks. Schweinsteiger and Fellaini are not 'proper' options from the bench and now they are all we have really. We can't expect from Pogba, Herrera and especially Carrick to possibly carry us through that schedule without burning out/getting injured. Getting Bakayoko now would give us more options now along with snatching potentially world class 22 year old midfield player for the future.

From what I see Castle based his report on an article from the Times published the 17th December since then ESPN and the Daily Mail reported the same thing while that possible transfer isn't mentioned in France.

I'd prefer William Carvalho if the prices mentioned weren't so high.

Based? He wrote the article for The Times!

If you're Monaco though, do you sell him in January of one of the rare years (post Oil Money) that PSG isn't dominating your league?

I think Bakayoko is a massive talent. Would love to add him to the squad, but I see him more as a rotation option for Herrera and Pogba in B2B roles more than as an alternative to Carrick.

It's possible that Jose believes we could use Herrera in Carrick's role and Bakayoko stepping in for Herrera. I do believe we will see Herrera transition deeper more frequently over the next year even if we bring in a younger player in a similar mold to Carrick.

Mourinho probably believes he can teach Bakayoko how to play that deeper role. People want to throw him into a dinitive box at the age of 21 and say he is this or that type of player, but it doesn't allways work out like that. With experience and maturity he could very easily play the holding role as he already has the talent and physical attributes to play there.

I just cant see Herrera in that role and I hope we dont go down that route. He doesnt have the passing range or the defensive qualities we need for a player in that position. He did play there earlier in the season but wasnt very impressive. It would be shoehorning again, and we've done enough of that over the last few years.

I think Herrera can play there, but that it would take some time for him to make the adjustment, which is why I think it would be a gradual bedding in. I believe his passing range is much better than we've seen at United when looking back at his days at Bilbao.

His biggest obstacle imo is his positional discipline in defense imo. Herrera has a tendency to step up and press, something he's excellent at and has the freedom to do in his B2B role with Carrick discplined and skilled enough to provide some cover. However, if he were to drop deeper Herrera would have to curb this natural inclination of his.

Whether or not he can or it's worth it to explore the option is a separate issue, but as I see it Herrera has already learned to play a different and deeper role from how he was used at Bilbao. I think he has it him to move back as he continues to evolve and mature as a player.

Regardless of how we plan on using Herrera though I feel we need to add a player in the mold of a mobile, athletic and imposing B2B like Bakayoko as well as a Carrick type that can dictate play from deeper and also shield the defense. I'd prefer these be players in their early-to-mid 20's that we can count on as part of our core for the foreseeable future.

And his last report is based on that article, nothing new happened.

Edit: And he is reheating his summer's claims.

Not disputing that but your post implied he lifted the story and rehashed it - he's well within his rights if it's his story in the first place.

I can see why Jose likes him. He looks very strong physically but also backs it up with good technique and dribbling. I don't think we'll sign him this window though as Jose said we'll be focusing more on selling than buying this window. Monaco would also like to keep hold of him till summer as they are doing well both in the league and the CL.
