Thomas Vermaelen admits he wants to leave Arsenal for Manchester United after the World Cup
  • Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen has told close pals he wants to move to Manchester United after the World Cup
  • United boss Louis van Gaal wants to sign Vermaelen in a £12million deal
  • Vermaelen has grown frustrated at a lack of opportunities at Arsenal
  • Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is ready to offer Vermaelen a new deal
Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen is ready to quit the Emirates Stadium for a move to Manchester United.

The Belgium international has told close pals that he wants to complete a controversial switch to Old Trafford after the World Cup.

United manager Louis van Gaal wants to sign the central-defender this summer in a deal that could be worth in the region of £12million.

It is understood Vermaelen's representatives have already agreed personal terms with United.

The next obstacle United must overcome agreeing a transfer fee with Arsenal, though Sportsmail understands the Old Trafford club will not make a formal offer for the defender until after his involvement in the World Cup is complete.

Nevertheless, United will table a bid and, with Vermaelen on board, are confident of sealing his signature.

Vermaelen has grown increasingly frustrated in north London during recent months as he's been forced to play second fiddle to first-choice central defensive pairing Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

However, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is unwilling to let his skipper leave the club without having a replacement lined up.

Having already lost right-back Bacary Sagna, who was the club's fourth choice centre-back, to Manchester City, the Gunners boss does not want to leave himself short of cover in the position.

Vermaelen has a year left on his current Arsenal contract, meaning he can leave the club for nothing next summer - a scenario the Gunners are keen to avoid.

The Gunners are ready to offer Vermaelen a new contract this summer, but without the guarantee of increased first-team opportunities next season, the Belgian is likely to be reluctant to sign.

He was dropped because he wasn't playing regularly for Arsenal. It's that simple. Happens all the time. International managers don't like fielding players who haven't been getting regular games for their club. Which makes sense.

This shouldn't be used as some sort of indicator of exactly what he does and doesn't bring to the Belgium team.

Van Buyten had 3 more starts this season than Vermaelen and 2 less games including substitutions. And he's 36

This manager clearly doesn't have a problem with a non regular starting for his team

Its happening my friend. Its happening. Well atleast CB is sorted. Jus left back and centre midfield left... Plus Cavani (superstar merchandise globel phenomenon signing)

So we are going to pay 12 million for guy Arsenal bought for 10 who they think is a failure and won't play him so he wants to leave. How does that make any sense at all?

Probably because Arsenal don't want to sell mate. The whole situation is bizarre though.

Don't forget he is on his last year of his contract.

Almost out-of-contract, no real competition for the signature... Looks like a United signing.

Feck it. If we strengthen enough in other areas then we might be able to make do with Vermaelen. If this is who we're going after then lets just hope we get the deal done quickly and move on to signing better players.

Vermaelen doesnt exactly have me jumping for joy, but it does strengthen, and it does still give our existing crop a good level of belief that they can still fight for their place - Bring in Hummels (for example) and at least one of Smalling, Evans & Jones will think their goose is cooked - if thats a good thing or not, is another questions

We still need 2 fullbacks, 2 CM players and a top class wide player to give us much needed speed, which is missing with this team.

Its not a terrible signing, he was quality at times and maybe with LvG he can have a revelation season and be a good squadie for us.

Well smalling and jones could be the first choice partnership, so he could add depth to the CB options, problem with the signing? He's like the rest of our CB problems, he can be injury prone, so it's a potential problem

If we get him then our back 4 can start a barbershop quartet called the 4 crocks, such an underwhelming singing.

My only problem is his injuries. If he is not injury prone this can be a very good signing. You need squad players to win the league, not just superstars.

I was dead against this signing initially, but I haven't been in this thread since Monday so have had a couple of days to process the idea and I'm starting to come round to it. All that sticks out in my mind is him making a few costly errors but there is a good player in there and if LvG thinks he can get the best out of him then fair enough.

Agree. He is a very good defender on his day. It's just the fee and the wages that are quoted that I find unsettliing. He is not a 100 pounds a week player, and paying 12 million for a player whom no other club is after, is injury prone and has 1 year left on his contract is just bizarre.

The fee and the wages are immaterial to be honest. I've seen £8-12m quoted and it'll probably be somewhere in between those figures and it isn't expensive for a club like ours. Getting a few bit part players like Buttner, Young and Anderson off the wage bill (as well as Vidic, Rio and Giggs already) will free up some money for his wages anyway. The key thing is that van Gaal has identified a player he wants to help him and us to be successful and we need to act on it and get him here if that's the case.

obviously LVG as sanctioned the signing so he must rate him ! (Unless the 100 plus million war chest, we are led to believe is at his disposal , is a load of bollocks so hes buying a bargain centre half that he thinks he can get a tune out of)

Possibly a cheap but good CB signing, so he can keep the money for much greater problems in the team, like the midfield. Perhaps LVG sees some of the younger players in our academy breaking through

Same here. We could without adding another injury prone player to our defense.

That's fine, except he's almost certainly coming here to be a first teamer rather than a squad option.

we had 5 CB's last season and still needed Carrick there. We lost 2 CB's this summer so signing at least 1 + M.Keane is a must and I rather see a world class CB signed or in addition. Vermaelen is defo not the answer to Vidic

When did Carrick play centre back last season?

I can't remember it. Last time I remember Carrick at centre back was the season we played Park/Rafael over Pogba in centre midfield against Blackburn.

100% sure Carrick played CB for us this season, can't remeber which one, but 100% certain it happened.

If we were in Europe next year I'd understand the reservations but we're in a position where the 'rebuild' can really be spread over two summers now. At the back is possibly the least crucial, if we leave aside the Shaw signing. Varmaelen is the perfect good-priced option/safety-net for the next 12 months for Jones/Smalling. Why splash £40m on a new defender when Jones may well make the step up? It's as good a time as any to try.

Agreed. I would rather we rebuild with some highly talented "kids" and look to the future. If this means getting some old duffers to help pad out the youngsters experience, then so be it, as long as we bring in, or promote the talented youngsters. Look at Adnan.

Shaw is very welcome in my opinion.

The Express article I saw on Facebook said 'shock double swoop'. How can it be a shock? They have linked us with every player under the sun in the last few weeks.

That's a bloody lie and you know it. Not one person on here said a word about Vermaelan being our perfect signing this summer.

Vermaelens knees are clearly knackered according to this recent photo

well we have to hope that that van gaal hasn't identified him and it all just media nonsense.

because signing a defender who has been out of form for over 2 years and is massively injury prone, when we have a defense full of defenders struggling for consistent form and have injury problems of their own, is so daft it doesn't bare thinking about what a mess we will end up in if our manager thinks that is a good idea.

So anything not said here isn't true?

If this story hadn't got out nobody would have mentioned Vermaelan at all.

Have you actually convinced yourself he'd be our perfect signing or do you feel it makes you a more loyal fan by justifying anything the club does?

How do we know that? We really don't have enough decent squad players. Like I said his injury is the annoying part.

Three reasons.
1) It doesn't seem very likely that Vermaelen would happily swap being on the bench at Arsenal for being on the bench at United, especially behind players I'm sure he thinks he's superior too. He needs first team football and if he's coming here it's almost certainly because we intend to give it to him imo.
2) The wages mentioned (100k) seem excessive for a player we're planning on leaving on the bench, don't they?
3) It has been reported that LVG ideally wants a left sided ball playing CB for the first team. Vermaelen fits that description.

He may well end up being a squad player but if he does it'll be because he wasn't fit enough/good enough for the first team place we're planning on giving him imo.

To be fair Vermaelen is probably the perfect type of player for what we want. Experienced, comfortable on the ball, background in Dutch football etc etc.

The problem (and it's an absolutely massive one) is that it has been years since he either good enough or fit enough. Beyond that though, he would be a damn good fit.
