This is not a very good signing. Just because Louis Van Gaal has signed him, doesn't automatically mean it will work out.

Still, if it does turn out to be a mistake then at least it won't be a particularly expensive one. Guess all managers have their blind spots, at least this one won't cost us 30 odd million or anything.

Tbh I'd be much more worried about the links to Cavani atm....

Quite confident in your ability to judge a player but have doubts over van Gaal's. He may or may not work out. But at least wait to see of LvG can work something up to get him back to his best. At least he would not be a 27 million pound noose around the neck.

He's not been in good form or even fit for a while now.

If we sign the best central midfielder avaialble, it doesn't automatically mean it will work out either. It's about the right players for the right squad. I'm 50/50 on the idea of him coming but I don't think we can label it a poor signing witout seeing what van Gaal's plans are first.

He's as injury prone as our other defenders and hasn't been good at all. So imo he isn't the best player for us.

RVP was injury prone before he joined United too.

I agree there are better options on face value for us but if we pick him up for a few million and occasioanly go through periods where we play 3 at the back or fail to sign Luke Shaw, it's a bit early to say it won't be a good signing in my opinion.

He had his first injury free season BEFORE he joined us though.

Vermaelen is NOT RVP.

This is such an underrated point that seems to be lost on a lot of people. If a manager has a clear idea of the system he wants to run it's better to spend 15m on a player that fits that system than 30m on a player who might be individually superior.

Wow, you actually thought I was comparing Vermaelen's ability to RVP. Good stuff.

I understand RVP had a full season before joined but the point is that a player can overcome certain injuries and regain full fitness. It's not unheard of.

Wages are generally much more important than a transfer fee for clubs.

All of this. So this, 100% this.

The reason he labelled him potentially a poor signing is due to his injury record, Van Gaal won't have an affect on that, understanding his plans or not wouldn't change his ability to stay fit. You mean to argue that the reason alone isn't great enough to label him a poor singing, moreover that if LVG had a plan for him then you wouldn't mind his injuries as much.

I think won't be easy to reach an agreement with arsenal.

I don't see this happening soon, maybe in august.

I'm guessing this going to be a cheap squad depth signing if so, it's a low risk high reward type move. He's not going to be too expensive via transfer and United still mgiht get a few good years from him.

I think he'll prove plenty of people in here wrong. Good addition and with the right partner is a quality defender.
I agree, if he can get back to his first few seasons with arsenal then he will be a great signing. Worth the risk in my opinion

we can take a risk if we sign 2 defenders. If we only sign one, we must be sure this player helps us from day one

"I know there has been a lot of talk and a lot of rumours but the only thing I can say is that it's not true.

"Everybody understands my situation at Arsenal and that I have one year left.

Please let this be true!

Maybe he was trying to get a better deal at Arsenal. Hopefully that's the case.

Although I'm glad that we're not signing him, I'm getting pissed off at the amount of players and agents having to come out and deny a link with us. It's becoming exhausting.

If England go out, which seems likely, it's going to get worse before it gets better (ie until after the WC) , journalists running out of names and no England to comment on. Waiting for the next ridiculous headline like "Cantona comes out of retirement and is linked with a one year deal with United"

"Not true"

Thank god, probably the weirdest player we've been linked to from Arsenal for as long as I can remember

At least take a first teamer

I think the "not true" is in reference to him having actually signed already. I can still see this happening.

There are surely better defenders on the market with more football years ahead, however the recent stuff raising even more questions about Louie's list.

Less Twitter Sherlocks and more Sky and BBC will definitely reveal something sooner than later before tournament ends.

He does have a lot of talent and Van Gaal might have rated him at Ajax. Ugly injury record, overrated at his best and that was years ago, but he is young enough and does have the talent to have a few years of good work in him. Low-risk, high-reward, but if this is our only CB signing then we're asking Smalling-Evans-Jones to properly step up and handle things. With no European football meaning less games, I could see it.

hope this isn't happening but if we are not bringing any other CB then i'll take vermaelen. we always need at least 4 CB in the squad.

Regardless of whether or not we bring in Vermaelan or any other centre half (I'm sure we'll bring at least one in), the time has come where those three now have to step up. We've been talking about 'potential' with them for long enough. Playing them permanently in their proper positions and with a bit of luck avoiding injuries, I think they can do it. But particularly in the case of Smalling and Evans, we're not talking about youngsters any more. I'm sure they all see this as their chance now with Vidic and Ferdinand going. But they need to take it.

But surely if he's leaving Arsenal because he's not happy at sitting on the bench, then he's not going to want to come here to sit on the bench? The alternative is that we'll actually play him as a first choice defender, which is terrifying.
