Thomas Lemar| Staying at Monaco

I'm pretty sure Arsenal will sign Lemar now.

We won't win the league this year with our squad, but it would take a whole lot of injuries to make us mediocre.
If Arsenal sign him they'd have really good business this summer by adding Lacazette, Lemar, that strong left back and keeping Sanchez.

I think lemar would be perfectly capable of playing in the 10 role... could actually be good having him and miki / mata able to comfortably swap positions throughout the game - though to be honest with less than 2 weeks of the transfer window left and monaco already having sold a few players for good cash i cant believe they are going to let off 3 of mbappe, lemar and fabinho leave so i really wouldnt be surprised to see him at monaco for another season

All else being equal, I am pretty sure Jose will not sign him primarily for #10. We need width, not "middle". Jose already indicated in presser that something like "we need someone from the side".

Our "middle" is already congested with Lukaku, Mkhi, Mata, Martial, Rashford, and to a lesser degree, Pogba (he likes to play more up front in a CM role) all prefer to play through the middle.

Probably Fergie just gave Jose a call

Asymmetrical 4-4-2

Formation is one thing, it also depends on how you set up in details. Pay attention to the "relative positions" below, ie LW vs RW

------------Rashford-------Lukaku--------------------
Lemar----------Pogba---------------Mkhi-------------
----------------------Matic--------------------Valencia
------Blind----------------------------------------------

CF: Lukaku / Rashford / Martial
RW: Mkhi / Mata / Lingard
LW: Lemar / Lingard / Rashford
CM: Pogba / Matic / Herrera

Left: Lemar outside winger, Blind more defensive (Shaw could change this, why not)
Right: Mkhi inside winger, Valencia provides width
CM: Both Pogba & Matic play as CM, and both need to defend, depending on circumstances. But generally, Pogba have more license up front and with Matic drifting slightly to the middle for defense, and Blind can help to cover if needed. So sometimes, the midfield could look like "skewed" Pogba-Matic-Mkhi with Matic as DM, and both Pogba & Mkhi creating chances

Looks very, very balanced

1. 2 lethal strikers up front
2. Width from both sides (LW, RB)
3. Creativity from Pogba and Mkhi
4. Stability from Matic
5. Except Pogba, the system can bring the best out of most positions, even the "most hated Blind !". Plus, if Jose plays very offensive, it can also bring the "almost best" out of Pogba with less defensive duty. The system must be very fluid, with everyone needs to cover the other if needed.

Looks sensible

If this is true, I would take it 60-80M++ euros !

Anyone like this ?

You can never have enough quality options imo, and Jose clearly thinks we could benefit from having a left footed playmaker for the left side. We might not be desperate for it, but it would certainly come in handy, so i am all for it.

I doubt buying Lemar would limit opportunities for Rashford or Martial. They are completely different types of players, and not every game requires playing a Martial or Rashford on the left. So what's wrong with having the option of an actual left footed creative player for that position every now and again?

Currently we have only Martial and Rashford for that left side, and they are both right footed strikers. We would surely only be weakening ourselves by limiting the variety within our options to only 2 similar strikers. However, having a quality left footed creative option -as well as those 2- simply offers us far greater variety and gives the squad a much better balance.

I mean, what would happen if Lukaku got injured? Rashford would be our CF, but we are suddenly down to only one option for CF and one option for LW.

Lemar is young and already top quality, and he would give us a variety of choices that we don't currently have, so it's just a no brainer for me.

Manchester United are reportedly "in the driving seat" for Monaco's Thomas Lemar.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with Lemar, who can play on either wing or in a central position.

But Arsene Wenger has so far been unable to get the deal done, and now journalist Ian McGarry suggests that Jose Mourinho is poised to swoop in and take advantage.

Speaking on The Transfer Window podcast, he said: “I’d say Manchester United are in the driving seat right now (for Lemar).

Do we even need him? Seems like another playmaking 'winger'

He's a winger with pace that can play both LW and RW, so yes he would be a nice addition.
Is he? From what I've read on here he's played only a few times on the right, prefers to be used hard down the middle and is more of the playmaking ilk. You have seen him play alot then?

We are currently using Juan Mata as a RW, so Lemar with his pace and dribbling would be an upgrade, even as a 'winger' that likes to come centrally.

He is still not a winger, you can eventually say that he could be one but describing him as a winger with pace is not describing him. He is basically the equivalent of Koke when he was used wide but with more pace and better dribbling.

Lemar is young, he is different player than martial and rash and he is good player, i agree with all that but we just don't need him and he will cut martial/rash minutes. Drastically. He is left winger/ left midfielder. He is not wing back or right winger. So we will have 3 players for one position. And one of them is just payed 50 mil. That means that two of them are every game on the bench. Doesn't make a sense.
And also you can't look on that situation like "hey what if lukaku gets injury?" What if not? And don't forget that zlatan will also be in the squad soon.
We need rose or some player who can be left wing back not lemar

Forget his position and ability, it's more important we make 4 signings. Doesn't matter who so long as we hit that target

Not sure, but think he's a former Journo that appears on the Duncan Castles podcast.
As in I'm fairly sure the podcast the article refers to is literally the one with Castles. Castles released that podcast after he released that article that started this thread, so it's basically the same news.

I listened to the podcast you're talking about. It was Castles making all the claims about United if I'm not mistaken..

Castle knows feck all to be honest, especially this transfer window. Nobody knows what is going to happen.
Anyone remembers the last left back we signed from Monaco ?

He reminds me of young Evra playing at leftback.

Fair enough, but it's probably safe to assume that what McGarry says stems from what he was told in that podcast he and Castles were in.

I agree. He is not an orthodox winger, which i think is what we need.

Mourinho has spoken about the prof of players he's looking for. Wide player that allows him to play 3 at the back.
To me that's a wing back or a very attacking minded LB. Thats not Lemar.

Most likely

Just did some digging and McGarry is also saying that VVD will be a Liverpool player by Thursday.

Interesting, as I don't think any of the reliable Liverpool journos have mentioned anything.

Lemar deal is still on the table from what Castles has been told, contrary to what Wenger said in his press conference. Monaco want 60m for him and the player prefers Man Utd over a move to Arsenal.

This info was passed onto Castles from his Monaco contact.

Didier Deschamps has just said that no one will be allowed to leave the france camp after it begins for any transfer activity. So if this deal has to happen it has to happen before monday (27 august) I think that is very unlikely.

hahaha bollocks, it's not up to him. You can't deny someone a transfer move. Free trade and that

Deschamps can't do shit.

Sounds like we are being used to make Arsenal up their bid

Get Lemar and we win the league imo. Just what we need. He is literally the one thing our squad is missing. He was brilliant whenever I watched Monaco

Please elaborate.
Where will he play?
How would we fit him in?
He's not a winger.
