It was a great Wrestlemania, best one for a while. Had a nice mix and matches I was expecting to be dire turned out great. I stopped following WWE properly a while ago pretty much just after Benoit killed his family. I'd look in every so often to keep up but mostly got my wrestling kicks from Japan. I still watch Mania but not live. I'm full of a cold at the moment and struggling to sleep, no work today so thought it would be great to watch it live again. Over recent years I've seen them trying to bring in new faces but never been really impressed. CM Punk never did it for me. He was and is (and with him now plying his trade in NXT I hope you're all starting to see it) a slo-mo Kenta. Anyway whilst I was looking forward to it my expectations were low. All I can say is I'm highly impressed and I think the current roster is the strongest I've seen for a long time. It very much reminds me of the early 90's a great mix of faces and talent enough to deliver some great matches.
Main event: Best match of the night. Rollins is a great talent and one they've now given a chance to forefront the company. I've seen a bit of him over the last year and always been impressed. He is the closest thing to a modern Shawn Michaels they have. They now have a champion that can work on all levels and deliver a great match. Having Brock just constantly beat everyone to a pulp only working once every 2 months is not good for the business. I was also very impressed with Reigns. Even though it was practically a squash match his power work looked stiff and I happily believed he could hurt Brock. Brock is great but it's a bit of the Andre the Giant syndrome. He's the current ultimate monster you bring in, a mountain for the other wrestlers to climb. With Heyman doing most of the work weekly, maybe the new deal means we'll get to see more of him over the coming months. I kind of hope they put him on the back burner for a while and let the new guys take over for a bit before bringing him back in for ultimate effect. When you have wreckers or monsters they always work best in the climb to the top then with a small stint at the top, before it starts to get dull. Lets leave it to the new generation to entertain us week in week out. A generation I have full faith in. Anyway the match was great and the fact everyone seemed to hate the inevitable feeling that Reigns was forcibly being pushed onto us brought in that dread that everyone was expecting his inevitable win, allowed them to throw a fantastic curve ball with Rollins. I was expecting the money in the bank to be cashed tonight but thought they'd have done it after a Reigns win which would have pretty much destroyed Brocks career. I guess that could have worked had he signed with UFC. Anyway everyone left the match standing tall with their character reps still intact. Anyway great work from all those involved, especially Reigns.
Undertaker Wyatt was the match I was least looking forward too but again I was very impressed. I do hope though they make next Wrestlemania his last working match. Story telling is still there but the ability is definitely fading. Loved Wyatts Scarecrows and if he was performing with an injury all the more credit to him. Think it showed when he was doing some simple kicks to the Undertaker in the corner. Anyway much better than expected.
The Ronda/Rock promo thing just went on for far too long. It had all that was bad about the supposed glory years of the late 90's but that's something I will get into later.
Cena-Rusev I loved. Cena is and has been a fantastic performer for years. A good solid Mr reliable. People may not like him but as a wrestler he's someone I really respect. You think of all the years of service he's given and he has delivered some brilliant matches, Always done what was asked. Anyway everyone was going on about the time machine for Sting/HHH. This one was even better. Like going back to the 80's. Rusev is really impressive. A wrestling crusher the likes we've not seen for a while. He successfully brings that old school style and it looks really fresh. Powerful, stiff and able to make holds like the camel clutch look really painful. None of this he does though with that old school pondering style. He's dynamic and fast. A really great talent. They should do a king of the ring with him winning. His entrance was the best of the night. We watched a USSR entrance with a frigging tank. Cenas second rope stunner was also a highlight. The whole match was a brilliant grudge undercard.
Divas Tag team. I'm going to say it, I hate the Divas, always have. Yet this was actually pretty good. I thought they all had hardly any talent and Paige the brit was the weakest link but it was surprisingly an enjoyable match. I just wish with these matches the commentators would pay it some respect instead of using it as a chance to talk about whats coming up and whats happened mixed with the odd Jerry the king ooop sounds anytime the girls get closely entangled with a view of their ass in shot. An OK match.
Sting-HHH. A wasted opportunity. I was really into it. I thought the entrances were ace (Though the Terminators should have moved) and the match was going on great. When they brought in DX-NWO though I marked out like everyone else but it ruined the whole thing for me in the end. I'd have rather it carried on the way it was going. Turning it into a metaphor for the Monday night wars and it became farcical. Shame that the highlight ended up being Nash selling a quad but seeing Hall even able to move and selling and bumping was brilliant. Don't forget this guy is in worse condition than Hogan.
Orton- Rollins. Brillliant match and a brilliant finish. Another reason for Rollins to be the entertainer taking it forward. What they do with Randy after this though I have no idea. Worth it just for the stomp into the vaulted RKO. This would normally be the strong undercard/intercontinental match.
7 man ladder match. Whilst the bumps were there and impressive, and Bryans win plus the backstage past intercontinental champions promo will hopefully return this belt to it's previous glory, this was for me the worst match of the night. When you get this many in a ladder match without the cohesion of a tag team situation i just becomes a confusing mess, which is a real shame as they all put in a lot of good work.
The rumble and tag team didn't see.
So overall the best Wrestlemania in years. A brilliant roster with the older hands and newer talent making a nice mixup. They now have the ability to really give us the greatest year for a long time. An immensely strong mid card and great headliners. They also have enough talent to really do something with the tag teams as well now.
Right onto people complaining about it not being wrestling and Stone cold etc. It's like Glastonbury, you may not like the newer acts but to claim it's not Glastonbury or wrestling because it's not the time or acts when you enjoyed it is idiocy. You don't culturally own it and your now an old git and your taste in music sucks. Get over yourself. This new breed is very impressive as they do something that is all important in these mega events and that's perform and tell stories in the ring. Thats what pro wrestling is. Promos are fine for the weekly TV events to tell a longer story arc but when you get down to it, you have to impress in the ring. The supposed glory years of the Rock, Stone Cold, HHH etc showed it's ugly head tonight. The whole Ronda Rock promo that was like pulling teeth. There, that was your glory years. Back in the 90's a lot of wrestling fan used to say Raw is War etc wasn't really wrestlng as it no longer was even trying to be a sport but instead was in full on soap opera mode with people spending forever talking and not doing much. I loved the abilities of the guys back then but when you'd watch a Raw and the final hour was taking up with 45 minutes of talking it was taking the piss. We always get some form of guest special thing at Wrestlemania but that just went on forever and became really boring very fast. There it was the Attitude, Raw is War played out right in front of you and it was the worst thing of the whole night. Don't worry to much, the generation that complained about Raw were also complained about because their wrestlers ( Hogan/Andre years) was to much of comic book that didn't represent the sport and so on yadda yadda yadda. Each generation complaining about the next. Face it
@rednev You're a grumpy old git. May as well get the pipe and slippers on and start complaining how the music these youths listen to is nothing but noise grandpa.
A brilliant Wrestlemania that has now got me interested in watching WWE again.
