Thibaut Courtois

Considering he is about 5 inches taller than de gea, I don't think he will struggle like de gea when under aerial threat.

I can't see him playing for a few years yet anyway.

How did that affect De Gea? Do you think he reads thevSun or listens to talksport?

It didn't affect much, thankfully, but it'll be much easier if the media wasn't scrutinising your every mistake whilst ignoring what you did right.

Why's that then?

De Gea was bought for big money and expected to hit the ground running with him replacing VDS immediately, Courtois would only be expected to challenge for the starting spot in a few years and even than, who knows if he won't be replaced by the next goalkeeper that Roman has his eyes on. Expectations won't be that high on him, and the media will no doubt give him an easier time over it.

I think Courtois will end up being the better of the two. He's immense for such a young man and goalkeepers often bloom late. He's had a storming first season in arguably the best league in the world. The english league is probably more of a challenge physically, but he's huge already and will adapt quite well I think. Shame we missed out on him if it's true we were looking to him a year or two ago. DeGea hasn't convinced me yet. Courtois is the closest I have seen to a Schmeichel type keeper since the big man retired.

There's a big difference from a keeper doing it in a backwater and doing it under the spotlight as Ben Foster proved.

Wow. A backwater you say? feck me, you are an arrogant Brit aren't you?

I saw this lad play one game. Made two mistakes and I think his team got the equaliser last minute. The only time I saw him play. Obviously still young and learning.

And older.

Nah, he got into the first team at 18 going on 19. Courtois was 19 when he joined Atletico on loan. Same age, and Courtois does look like he's going to be a world class keeper, but still has a long way to go.

Betis? One of the two games which cost Atletico a top 4 spot.

He's talking about the team, not the league.

And he's right.

The team who won the only other European club trophy available? They might not be a force in Spain, but to call them a backwater is arrogant as feck.

Still, the pressure at Atlético Madrid and the pressure at Manchester United or Chelsea are two completely different things. Don't get hung up on words, that's the basic point and it's a valid one.

He's spending another year in Madrid according to the Atletico website...

Thibaut Courtois will next season play at Atletico Madrid after Atletico on Wednesday reached an agreement with Chelsea on transfer for a year,' a statement on the Spanish club's official website read.

'The Belgian international goalkeeper played all of last season on loan playing in in 37 games in La Liga and 15 in the UEFA Europa League - a competition won in Bucharest on May 9.'

I think I would prefer him to go on loan to a premiership team to get used to the league and the country but I guess that'll be next season.

He is still very very young so it is probably wise to keep him out on loan. It's not imperative to give him premiership experience at this stage. Maybe the coaching staff thinks that he is not mentally or physically ready for the hustle and bustle of the premiership yet.

How long do you think Cech will be your first keeper/at the club? Assuming Courtois goes out on loan to Madrid next season and then to a PL club the season after do you think he will go straight into the first team if he performs well? (if Cech does just as good) Plus do you think Cech would be satisfied as a 2nd keeper?

Physically he seems there already. He's 6'6" and and does not seem skinny. Mentally, who knows.

Cech just signed a new contract so I guess he's here for at least 3 more years. I think Courtois was signed because he was a very promising prospect who was availiable (rather than us desperately needing a goalie).

I can't see Cech playing backup. He's bugger off or retire early (for a goalie).

I meant more along the lines of being ready to deal with physicality but I suppose that is as much mental as physical

Chelsea have a real gem on their hands. So young, yet so good and promising. He's getting valuable experience in Madrid as well. Wish we had him.

Bollocks deal. Courtois may be a good, up-and-coming goalkeeper but Falcao should be worth £60m or so in this current transfer state. Courtois is not worth £25m.

Acording to the "experts" on Sky Sports' La Liga coverage, Chelsea have offered £35 million plus Courtois for Falcao.

Yep, just heard that.

Crazy deal. Falcao is good but Courtois has done great. Very tough to find a top quality keeper and he could be yours for many years (I know, it is hard to find a top quality striker as well, but still...).

Hypothetically, if this is true and you are letting him go, what would your team be likely to do with the goalkeeper situation and who would you bring in?

These big swaps rarely happen so it probably is garbage but Courtois would be worth £15+ million easy.

Also He's settled at Atletico so it is as low risk a transfer for them as you are ever going to get.

Cech is only 30 and won't need replacing for years (unless he wants to try another league).

We were in for Butland last month though, so who knows!

Play Cech for the next ten years?

Ah, thought he was a bit older than that.

The interest in Butland was weird and could mean Chelsea don't expect Courtois to be there in the long term and with Cech looking like being there for years to come, Courtois is probably on his way out.

Courtois is worth De Gea money, £50m isn't to be sniffed at.

He's staying at Atletico for another year apparently. Wonder what will happen next, 3 years on loan at the same club is not something you see very often. Makes me wonder why Atletico didn't try to buy him in the first place. Cech is clearly going nowhere fast.

Cech is only 30? I thought that he was at least two years older than that. Perhaps Atletico did attempt to buy Courtois, but Chelsea see him as a definite replacement for Cech. Sooner or later though, the lad will want to officially sign with a club.

Courtois is far too good already to play the waiting game, and there's no way he'd want that either. He's ready to walk into a European top club and be their number 1, like De Gea for us. Chelsea have to realize they can 't keep both Cech and Courtois. At the end of next season he'll be 3 years into his 5 year contract, Chelsea will have to offer him some sort of promise then or risk losing him at a reduced fee or even on a free.
