Thibaut Courtois

Atletico were interested in Signing him to replace DDG.. It could be possible that we tipped them off about him..

Courtois set for Atletico Madrid

Chelsea are set to send new goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois on-loan to Atletico Madrid.

The Belgian starlet is putting the finishing touches on his move from Genk, and he was expected to stay with his current club for the forthcoming season.

But it has now emerged that he is set for a move to La Liga, where he is likely to replace David De Gea - who joined Manchester United earlier this summer.

Atletico had rivalled Chelsea for his signature before the Blues won the race for him earlier this week.

"It is better for me to go to Atletico, I can learn more in Spain than in Belgium," said Courtois.

"I'll have to fight for my place, but that is life at the top. The easiest option for me would have been to stay at Genk.

"I could be loaned out for a second or even third season before becoming part of Chelsea's first-team squad."

Courtois insists Cheslea's big stars made him feel welcome when he was shown around Stamford Bridge.

"I was already presented to the players, Lampard and Terry immediately talked to me, and Drogba said he saw on TV how I celebrated the title with Genk, and goalkeeper Petr Cech and I exchanged a few words."
..

Wow, someone who not only can tell the future but also watched a lot of Racing Genk. Kudos.

To revisit this:

An official announcement of the complex deal is imminent with Chelsea paying Belgian champions Genk €9 million for the 19-year-old's services before farming him out to Atletico Madrid, who need a goalkeeper following the departure of David de Gea to Manchester United.

"The loan deal for Courtois is exactly what we needed to ensure that we have good cover in goal. We want guarantees in case anything goes wrong with our current goalkeepers [Sergio Asenjo and Joel]," said coach Gregorio Manzano after yesterday's friendly against Granada.

So he's going there as cover for first choice Sergio Asenjo, who David De Gea kept out of the team even though he was billed as the next big thing in Spain before he signed for Atletico

Atletico also contacted Valencia about signing Diego Alves as DDG's replacement but Valencia had only just signed him themselves and werent interested in letting him go already.

Doesnt look likely that Courtois is as good as David De Gea

Who said he was as good? Nobody in this thread that's for sure.

You said there was "no chance of him being better in the long term" despite having never seen him play. Which is a statement I consider to be rather silly.

If he's better longterm than David De Gea then he'll be significantly better than Cech.

I dont think thats likely.

Not many goalkeepers are "significantly better" than Cech so I will agree that it is not likely.

You said there was "no chance of him being better in the long term" than De Gea which would be bollocks even if you HAD seen him play. As you have not, it's just laughable.

DDG is that good and Courtois would have made more waves if he was going to be as good as him. He certainly wouldnt be a backup to Asenjo.

It would be a lot different if you werent sending him out on loan, but in fact brought him in to compete directly with Cech. That would suggest that like De Gea, he's a special goalkeeper who can play at a high level despite his young age

I've never seen Slobodan Rajkovic play either, but I'll also tell you there's no chance he'll be as good longterm as Phil Jones.

It will be interesting to see how Atleti cope next season especially if Kun joins de Gea on the list of players to leave the Caledron. Have they signed anyone decent with the DDG money?

Miranda from Sao Paulo for the defence, Adrian the top scorer at the under 21 euros and I believe they're trying hard to sign Griezman from Sociedad

I can see you are not going to back down from your mystic meg-like future telling so i'll let you carry on making statements about players you have not seen play without further comment.

As for Courtois at Athletico, surely Chelsea would not send him there on loan to be a backup, what on earth would be the point of that? He might as well be on our bench.

Seems like Coutois was not signed as a back up like Ekeke predicted, he started and kept a clean sheet in his first two games. Will be good to see how he does.

Is Sergio Asenjo any good?

I've heard people rave about him before the emergence of DDG as one to keep an eye on, and now another seemingly unknown youngster have just come in and taken his place.

On topic though, it seems the Belgians are entering a golden generation of footballers, after disappearing into the background for a decade or so now. I'm not a huge follower of the League but from the top of my head I can think of some really promising or already good footballers:

Courtois/Mignolet
Vermaelen
Kompany
Defour
Vertonghen
Hazard
Lukaku
van Buyten
Witsel
Fellaini
Dembele
Boyata

Definitely not walkovers anymore.

^ Yeah, some real promise in the Belgian side, and should the majority those players stay fit/meet their potential, I wouldn't be surprised to see them becoming dark horses in future international competitions.

In other news, I like to say Thibault in the style of Rowan Atkinson saying "wibble." It amuses my simple mind.

They have another young goalkeeper coming through their ranks in 'Joel'. Asenjo has become third choice.

Haven't seen Atletico at all this season so I can't comment on his ability. Should be remembered he actually took De Gea's place, so even if he's doing well it could be a bumpy ride when he gets to England.

Courtois wants English loan

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has revealed he wants a loan move to another English club before making his Chelsea debut.

The summer signing from Genk has already been sent for the season to Atletico Madrid in order to build his experience and he would consider staying in Spain on another loan.

But the 19-year-old is also keen to get a feel for the Premier League before making a first appearance under scrutiny at Chelsea.
He told RTBF: "I think that before going to Chelsea, I have to play one or two years in another English team to discover the football played there.

"After that, we'll see if I am ready to move to Chelsea. It's hard to say now."

There would be no shortage of suitors for Courtois, who has earned rave reviews in Spain.

He said: "At first it was difficult. When I arrived, I found myself alone at the hotel. I almost wanted to cry.

"My team-mates helped me. I learned the Spanish language and all is well now."

He added: "If Madrid wants me to stay one more season and Chelsea accept, we'll see."

Sky-Sports
I agree with him that it would be the best option.

But Chelsea are having still a little problem at the goalkeeper position........i mean Cech can make a lot of mistakes and he's still the number one because Turnbull and Hilario aren't PL quality.

If Courtois will not be Chelsea player in the next 1-2 seasons then they're needing at least someone like Green or Jaaskelainen or Schwarzer as another goalkeeper.

Courtois wants to stay on at Atletico next year, whether Chelsea will allow it to happen is a different story.

Can see him walking right into the Chelsea lineup in 2014.

Basically Chelsea has their goalkeeper position sorted for the next 10 years or so..

Basically Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea and Man City are set for next ten years in GK Dept. Spurs are fecked(unless they sign Krul), Reina has already shown to be on a decline but can improve next season.

Courtois hasn't played a single PL game.

Little premature to be talking about him as a regular for the next 10 years?

Maybe but the talent is definitely there though.

He wouldn't be the first talented youngster who failed to deliver on all the hype.

I mean, look at De Gea. He forged an even better reputation for himself in Spain and had to dig pretty fecking deep to get his career back on track after his early-season wobbles. If he had even a tiny bit less determination and self-belief he could have easily gone the same way as other talented young keepers, such as Howard and Foster.

As well as adjusting to a new league, Courtois has to adjust to playing for a team where the keeper sees very little of the ball but every goal conceded comes under intense scrutiny. It will be completely new ground for him. Way too premature to assume he will be a guaranteed success at Chelsea IMO.

The advantage he'll have is that you won't see the media pouncing on his every mistake like they did to De Gea.

He is my GK in FM, I bought him off Chelsea but the bastards wanted 12M for him. Well worth it though. If Chelsea get Fefanny from Everton or Dembele from Fulham they are certainly setting themselves up a Little Belgium there in London.

You know, he could do a job for us.

Would allow us to play De Gea in midfield.

Sign him up!
