That's a different question, but I'd be amazed if Barca had any such power, since allowing Barca to buy Thiago back in 2 years for half the price would negate the effect of the buyout clause. The point of the low price buyout clause is to make Thiago an attractive option in the transfer market - a buyback clause would prevent a move to a top club. Thiago's people wouldn't have forced a buyout clause on Barca, and then allowed them to nullify it.

So does that mean that if there's a buyout clause that we meet and agree personal terms that Barca have no power to put in a buyback clause?

Yes. Unless in the buyout clause, there is another clause which says that Barca can have him back for X amount of money, a think that doesn't make sense. So, pretty much if the release clause is true, we (and anyone else who is interested) only needs to convince the player and pay those 18m EUR to Barca.

I think we can rule Chelsea out as an option - I can't see Barca letting a player strengthen a Mourinho team

Seeing that you are struggling to understand the meaning of buyout clause, here is a little help.

Question: What is a buyout clause?

Answer: It is a clause in a player's contract with their club which guarantees that the club will allow them to leave if another club makes an offer meeting some minimum value (specified in the clause).
So, both Real and Chelsea can actually sign him if they convince Thiago and pay the fee in the buyout clause, and then send Barca a postcard of him training in the new club. And Barca can do feck all about it.

As regards the buyout clause I know exactly what it it

Thiago has come through the ranks at Barca - I think he'd have a bit more respect that to join Madrid or Mourinho

Technically Barcs have no control but I'd expect the player to have some respect

I suppose every once in a while you get a Mo Johnston or a Figo

The best thing about that video was easily the commentary, though I do really want us to sign Thiago.

Ooh ooh ooh I want I want I want, I was reading stuff, on here I think, that he wasn't really a cm but that video alone discounts that. I know that chances are probably slim but I would deffo like to see him in a Utd shirt. I realize that is complete muppetry but there you have it.

I don't think Barca as a whole have any special hatred for Mourinho that they wouldn't join another of his clubs. They disliked him while he was at Madrid of course, but just because he is at Chelsea now, I doubt that it will have much of an impact or be seen as a betrayal were he to join him. Joining Madrid would be a whole different matter though.

Just as an aside on why did Barcelona "forget" to give him enough minutes. Roura was asked about it at a press conference and said that from a coaching staff point of view, "It's not our job to know everyone's contracts."

I actually think it might be as basic as that. The contract was signed in the Guardiola era. Vilanova had other things on his mind. I also suspect Rosell is every bit as dumb as he sounds when he's being interviewed and that he hires underlings who don't make him nervous by being too clever, so no one sent a memo to the coaching staff.

Of course I might be entirely wrong and I've just been seduced by the Laporta spin machine.
- Don't think so though :smirk:

One, Roura's comments sounded like they were intended to convey that lineups are determined by availability and form not contracts.

Two, even under Guardiola the season before, Thiago failed to hit the 60% threshold and was available for 18 million as well. There was little in the way of controversy or moving on because the player (And presumably agent/father) had no intentions of giving up.

Three, I despise Rosell but I don't believe for a second that he, Zubi or anyone with the board was oblivious to contract clauses - on the contrary, they are ruthlessly efficient when it comes to numbers.

Rosell is fairly calculated, IMHO. Moves are planned out, far in advance and so I find it implausible that Thiago's clause snuck up on anyone two years in a row.

Furthermore, what is also clear is that the board is doing nothing to try and entice Thiago to stay through an improved contract etc. which makes me believe they are either trying to profit off the player's sale or engaged in some sort of Mexican standoff over contract improvement. Irregardless, it's inexcusable that it's being handled this way, IMO, and would've never happened under Laporta

So essentially you're saying Barcelona wants Thiago to stay only on their terms and won't be too fussed if he actually leaves.

I dreamt last night that it was all over twitter that we had triggered his release clause, why did I wake up from that dream.

I hear ya, as long as you are not also a sleep walker. Being a sleep walking sexual predator is just crossing the line.

Nah but yesterday I was wanting to wake up from my dream so I was hitting and biting my girlfriend to try and get her to wake me up, but my body wasn't moving.

I thought we HAD triggered his release clause even in reality.

Hopefully we have, lets not give up the dream.

I hope we've triggered it. No point dragging our feet is there.

So does that mean that if there's a buyout clause that we meet and agree personal terms that Barca have no power to put in a buyback clause?

That's what I assume. Though Barca have other means of getting their man - think of the incessant charm offensive when they wanted to land Fabregas from Arsenal.

Quotes and stories beginning to surface on twitter regarding Thiago. Apparently he's said he's interested in united. Not sure if it's legit.

Dont do this to me, don't you dare fecking do this to me. Sources sir?

A few places but check @Marcelo_Lopez84. He's translated and is a spanish journalist.

Thiago also joked about the weather and said the move would excite him. Surely this is not real? This journalist has said that Thiago shares the same management company as Welbeck.

I'm saying coaches & players are echoing what I've been, that Thiago is valuable & the future for the club. The board is another story. Either they look to profit from him or are in a staring contest to see who blinks first over a contract improvement. From the board's perspective, I wager, they believe caving now sets a dangerous precedent going forward for player negotiations within the squad. They're playing hardball, that much is clear, IMHO. Personally, I think it's dangerous but it should've never come to this in the first place is also my contention had he been played more and felt valued. In which case, even if he had not hit the 60% threshold, I believe he'd bin any & all approaches for his service - regardless of the buyout clause.

Between the board & coaching staff marginalizing the cantera players through lack of playing time, it wouldn't surprise me to see some look to leave. Although, for now, the only one giving that impression is Thiago. Is he serious about it or trying to get the board to blink first and improve his contract? I don't think Rosell will cave which makes it a dangerous game to play, IMO.

FC, Let's say he stayed. How long before he gets decent playing time in your opinion? Does he have a few years to wait?

Impossible to answer except to say he'd surely see more minutes than this past season, providing he's healthier.

Depends on what happens with Cesc and how Iniesta & Xavi fare in terms of health, as well. Tito himself acknowledged he made mistakes this season and I imagine rotation was clearly at the top of that list of mistakes.

I was thinking about how long he's been playing 'one way' and how a change of scenery would likely require the player to adapt/adopt a new way of playing. That has to enter into his thinking and perhaps that too strengthens the board's hardline position as well. He's ambitious and a leader so his lack of featuring for the first team must be affecting him. Truth is, a successful Euro, for me, would embolden him to depart as he'd be galvanized by the successful role of leading a team

Anyone watching Spain/Germany U21s now? Thiago is having a good game again, just hit the post. He's such an intelligent, tidy little player. He and Isco are a cut above. Good to see that Thiago and DDG appear to be good friends also...

Isco is very silky too, this Spanish side sure don't mind throwing in a cross or two.

Without dreams we are nothing.

This Thiago guy is probably the most talanted young prospect since Ronaldo. Who say no to dream about the hottest bird around?

I like that. I like that a lot. Did you come up with that yourself or is it from a Batman film?
