In what sense? Surely there's better, more fun things to do than this?

There is. Not everyone is basing their whole lives around it and just because you don't enjoy it doesn't mean others don't. I think you imagine everyone is serious about it all. It's just another way for people to discuss things on the caf when the football takes a break. If it wasn't for this thread we wouldn't have had the excellent gifs from Jetson and Olly. People find it amusing. Let them be.

Brwned

It's over 20 degrees here and I'm inside wanking to dodgy porn and refreshing the Thiago thread.

Spit your dummy much? You don't even know who we are officially going for.

its hardly spitting dummies to want us to bring in a top quality midfield player is it?

the last time we did that was when we signed Carrick and Scholes will be big shoes to fill

its pretty obvious we are heavily interested in Thiago and what I said was that I'm hoping we aren't putting all our eggs in that basket

wind yer neck in!

Bah, first time I've logged and seen any news in a few days, thought this would be wrapped up now :(

This thread is more fun than actual football threads. This is fun. Football threads get all sammy serious in no time.

 you flap

'm not reading to much into the tweet, I would have been surprised if anything got announced before the manager officially took the job and I expect that he will still sign for us hopefully next week.

Agreed. I think this Thiagon/off takes a lot of heat from the Moyes' and Rooney's threads that potentially bring out the worst from most posters. So, it has its merit.

I mean, I'm not particularly confident that we'll sign him because everything so far points to the typical muppet disappointment that we suffer every summer. However, the tweet about loving the city of Barcelona hasn't really made any difference to me in terms of how ON or OFF the transfer could be. I really feel that next week will be telling, he'll either confirm he's staying, sign a new contract or we'll see some actual movement in terms of him coming here.

I think this transfer story peaked far too early. It would have better served if it was still going strong when both Thiago and Moyes arrived back from their respective holidays. For now, we're all just tired of it.

I'm slightly lost why many more clubs are not scrambling for Thiago's signature when seemingly the price, and his wage demands are not exorbitant for someone of his talent.

Because they know he is staying at Barca.

The truth is I think there are hardly any top teams where he will go straight into the starting line-up. It's quite clear that's what he wants and if he doesn't get that guarantee, he won't move.

So barca are planning on keeping both thiago and fabregas? One of them has to move surely.

Great point. If it's not Barca or United, there's only Pep and his influence that comes to mind.

It could be because of the fact, we've been monitoring his progress for so long that by the natural cause, we have the pole position in pursuing this deal and Thiago is propably fully aware of vast amount of attention, we already gave him.

It could be because while we've been waiting to sign a midfielder for a couple of years most of the other top clubs have stocked their midfields. Our competition in this country would come from Chelsea as they could still use a midfielder, but I have a feeling Mourinho wants a stronger, more defensive-minded player.

Yup. Definitely someone better than Mikel and more in the mood of Makalele.

The cynic in my says that we are being used. IMO Alcantara wants a better contract at Barca, how can he get one? Well Barca needs to know that other team wants to trigger the buy-out thing Thiago dwells on the whole story, Barca gives him a new contract. But what about supporters who will call him a money whore or something? that easy to sort out as well - Alcantara says he wants to have more playing time....which team has big hole in midfield, is big enough to attract attention of Spanish media to make the whole story more plausible. Which club seems to be on good terms with Barca to make the whole thing more digestible for Barca fans? Yes, United tick all the boxes to use in getting a better contract. So i don't expect this transfer to be concluded.

If you play for Barcelona, there aren't many places that wouldn't be instantly dismissed as a step down or as a just-for-money move. Basically it's us, Bayern and Madrid - and we're the team that would buy a 22 year old midfielder and expect him to be a starter.

It's like buying a 28 year old Ronaldo - there's nowhere (apart from us!) that he can go to until he reaches 30, even if Madrid can be tempted to sell.

And we, being the kind club we are, just sat back and allowed our name to be bandied about as trying to sign him and invoke the get out clause, even though it was only a ploy. How stupid and gullible do you think the people who run our club are?

How can you tell if the player's interest is genuine? How can you tell if we are his first or second option?

Why couldn't Ronaldo go to Chelsea or City out of interest? Simply because he's "Loyal" to us?

I'm fairly sure we did actually contact Thiago's representatives and probably Barcelona as well. It's entirely plausible, however, that the player is just using the talks that have taken place as leverage against Barcelona, in a bid to get a new contract or the assurances he wants. Our interest is probably genuine, there's no need for him to invent some interest.

As much as I hate to admit it, at the moment leaving Barca and coming here would be a bit of a step down. You can rule out Real Madrid, which leaves Bayern. In a way, they'd make a better option than us at the moment if you're talking about not making a step down.

And I wouldn't trust Ronaldo so much. If he was desperate to get out of Real Madrid and they accepted a bit from City or Chelsea with ridiculous wages, he'd go there almost certainly. He's nowhere near as loyal as people like to think.

If the story of Mazinho being in Manchester last week is true (and it came from respectable sources) then I doubt we were just being used as a bargaining tool. Would be strange and unprofessional to take it that far.
