Thiago Alcantara | Signed for Bayern Munich

I don't think I have the emotional capacity for this thread. I'll be here to steer us through the home straight if something more factual comes out in our favour. I refuse to be burnt again this summer.

Just back from a internet-less weekend in a tent, how in the name of Eric Cantona have we not signed him yet? And then I see rumours of Rooney getting a nice new contract. feck off summer.

Ballbag has just said we are signing him. So its now off. Sorry Cunto.

Olly, where is the ThiagOn/off meter at now?

Is Balague clued up to anything Barca-related or is he usually off about that too?

He's not really said much different from what Hunter has been saying the past couple of days, if anything different at all.

Stay positive chaps. It's been stressed that his immediate future - this coming season - is what is most important to him right now. That puts us in the drivers seat, I reckon. Barca aren't just going to tell him "OK then, you will start more games" considering the competition he has in that squad. He has to go if he wants to be a starter. We appear to want to offer him good wedge too. It's still, and never has not been, ON!

He reports what his mates on AS have put in the paper, plus the occasional item from the Futboleros gossip TV show.

His old fella looks a smart man, surely he'd convince Thiago to join United.

Bayern have an even stronger midfield, especially in terms of depth. It wouldn't make much sense in that respect, but he's always been valued very highly by Pep, so perhaps he would find a way to get him into the team

I'm lost. How exactly is this Graham Hunter related to Thiago and family?

Wrote a book about Barca and was apparently some sort of rep when United contacted Thiago's camp two years ago.

MD clutching at straws?

On the vexed question of where is Thiago.

According to the Spanish papers last week he was planning to go to Lloret de mar (Barcelona on Sea) for a bit of clubbing, sort out a "few things" in Barcelona, then he was off to Ibiza. I'd guess he's in Ibiza now.

Fear not. They have planes (less than an hour to Barcelona, 2 and a half to Manchester), hydrofoils, phones, 3/4G network - all kinds of amazing things. It's not like he's gone on a month's trek across the Arctic using only huskies.

Bayern would be a tempting move for him, assuming he has enough confidence in his own ability to break into their midfield. Although, I'd imagine he knows he'd play a large sum of games for us next season.

Thiago has abit of a homer for Pep, doesn't he?

Intriguingly Pep said at his press conference. "The only players who leave Barcelona are the ones the club wants to leave. And the ones who want to play more."

In your face, Mr Valdes!

Not surprised Bayern are thrown into the mix. Can't say I blame him if he wanted to work with Guardiola either.

Apparently Guardiola said he would not persue any Barcelona players for transfers in his press conference, can anybody confirm?.

Either way I still don't think he is likely to go there. It would be out of the frying pan and into the fire.

fecking Guardiola. As if beating us in 2 finals wasn't enough he's now going to steal our Thiago

How would it be more tempting than staying? He'd have a bunch of people ahead of him, just like at Barcelona. Except that his rivals would be even younger, no 33-year-old Xavi there.

It would be stupid for Thiago to go to Bayern. He may as well stay at Barca and fight for a place.

I'd be tempting football wise, Bayern would be the only step up from Barcelona right now. He obviously wants to move on for game time, but who's to say he doesn't have enough confidence in his ability to break into Bayern's midfield? Especially with Pep's presence.

Getting ahead of Martinez, Schweinstiger and Kroos/Gotze would only be a slightly less impossible task than the Barca trio.

If he had that confidence surely he'd just stay at barca given that xavi is actually going to surely start playing less and less games where as schweinsteiger is the captain and Martinez is the dm and also firmly established . Having just spent big on Goetze there's no real open spot for him.

Well you'd hope anyway assuming he is leaving for game time.

Martinez, Schweinstiger, Guztavo, Kroos and Gotze.

Vs

Carrick, Anderson and Cleverly.

If Pep's involved, he's hardly going to insinuate to Thiago that he'll likely not get much game time at Bayern. Is he? And obviously it's up to player, and Manchester United is the logical move for him.

Agreed, plus he knows he fits in with Barca's game, whereas he might not at Bayern. He's a ready-made Xavi replacement, but there's no obvious player he's 'like' in the current Bayern set up. Not a DM like Martinez, not combative and physical like Schweinsteiger, much more of a true midfielder than Muller or Kroos.

It's one of the reasons he'd fit in so well with us. Unlike Bayern or Madrid, we don't play two genuinely deep/defensive midfielders. Instead we tend to play two all-round box-to-box midfielders whose qualities complement each other - Keane's combativeness and Scholes' guile, or Carrick's elegance and range with Cleverley's energy and possession play. We don't specialise our midfielders as much as a lot of top clubs do these days. That will suit Thiago, who stands out because he's so good at so many things. A potential 'master of all trades', essentially. Playing next to Carrick wouldn't require him to limit himself to any one job.
