Thiago Alcantara | Signed for Bayern Munich

Clutching at straws now. But lets keep hope alive through Monday. This seemed so on yesterday, can't believe how disappointingly this has all collapsed.

Lot of stuff doing the rounds on twitter right now that say Thiago is on the verge of agreeing an improved contract with Barca and that this has all been a ruse. I feel dirty even reporting it.

There's actually nothing saying that, just searched it.

I searched that stuff on twitter, nothing came up except of several Barcelona fans posting their theory.

It would seem odd if that was the case, considering he got a payrise was it last season or the season before? Recently, anyway

Yup, people were saying that Barca have the option to give him a pay rise but would decide against it because it sets a bad picture for the future youth player, given that he got one last season.
Edit: And I'm pretty sure it was just last season.
Edit2: Actually it was in summer 2011.

I'd die of disappointment. My first muppetry experience can't end in tears-- sign a contract, Thiago!

It's a rough one to take because there is such a small amount of risk.

Looking at our muppet dreams over the past few seasons, all of them came at a hefty price except for Ozil. This made it easier to take when it fell through.

That's probably what I was hearing about then. I didn't actually search it. I just got passed the information second hand. Serves me right for not doing my own homework.

I'm still confident, Alcantara is a great fit for United in so many ways. Trust in Woodie to get it done, would be a great statement.

Off to the pub for beers, will have to use portable muppetry to stay in touch.

I expect we won't see many more updates until early next week. Reports said that they would discuss a deal over the weekend or so. Hopefully by this time next week, he'll have agreed a deal and everything is official. Could be we have to wait until July 1st though, for the medical and everything to be sorted as he is on vacation right now. The sooner the better.

Why is everyone getting so worked up by this denial by Thiago's representatives? It's quite common as it's clear that the deal is not yet completed. They're not going to say ''yes, we've agreed terms with United but they're still negotiating with Barcelona and the deal may fall through''.

Good point by a newb.

Thing is I don't think he actually is after an improved contract. This guy just wants to play regularly. So I don't think anything's changed at all. I'll still spend the rest of my Friday evening refreshing this thread.

The way some fans are, especially ours when it comes to midfielders, I could probably put "Thiago signs new contract for Barca" on my own twitter and it would make it on here, that's how much we panic about the slightest hint of bad news.

The increasingly weird Bleacher Report talk about the "tactical implications" of Thiago signing for CHELSEA. Apparently he's a bit slow, and likes time on the ball, which wouldn't suit Chelsea. I always considered Thiago's strengths to be his quick burst of acceleration and how he thrives when playing his football under pressure in tight spaces.

But what do I know? Them Yanks know best. I just think that if they manage to draft Thiago out of the free agency, he'll be an asset to the offence, resulting in more orbs in the onion bag. Possible MVP candidate.

I think the solution here is to do a "City" and offer him big wages, something substantially more than Barca would be willing to do given that he is not a star yet at Barca. More money and more playing time.

No, bollocks to that. We'll offer a good amount considering the scale of the signing but I don't want us offering a classless Wayne Bridge for 95k per week type amount. He'll be well rewarded but its the playing time and the chance to be the man at a top champions league side that is the draw... not money

Reading that makes you wonder if they have actually ever seen him play. He isn't slow by any means, isn't the fastest player out there but for center midfield standards, he is pretty quick. I don't think any center mid would come up favourably speed wise when compared to Ramires.

It's hard to lure a Barca player who plays alongside Iniesta, Xavi and Messi by saying the lure of Manchester United. What we have to offer him that he doesn't have at Barca is the chance to be an instant starter, and become a star for us, not just a replacement for Xavi/iniesta which is what he'd be there 3-4 years down the line.

Totally agree. He'd be a United star from day 1, and he will know that.

It's incredible how my opinion and personal feelings on the "will he won't he" debate is so easily and heavily influenced by posts on here!

Last night I was totally convinced we were signing him. Not only by what I had read but by the fact that it just made sense. One post saying that he's close to signing a new contract and I've totally changed my mind, now agreeing that it was always the logical choice and its clear he was just allowing the rumours to grow to strengthen his position at Barca.

I'm not even joking!

Has anyone actually got any sources regarding him imminently signing a new contract?

There was nothing, only some Barca fans on twitter saying they think he'll end up signing a new contract based on absolutely nothing.

Wait wait. You lot are willing to believe Thiago will sign new contract when he recently improved his contract not too long ago? What kind of precedent does that leave for Barca? A very bad one in my eyes. If he's staying at Barca, there's no point to improve the contract because by virtue, once Aug 1 comes around, the release clause skyrockets.
