I still can't see why such a promising player, brought up through the youth ranks and ready to break through would want to leave Barcelona, despite his bromance with De Gea. Surely he would get enough game time over the next year or so.

Not the most informed comment. :)

Seriously? One article in a British newspaper and suddenly everyone is giving up?

For a start, the British press know feck all about what is going on at United. They're unreliable when it comes to us. On the other hand we've got Spanish newspapers which are briefed by the clubs and we're choosing not to believe them when they say he's definitely leaving and he's coming here.

Not with Tito. Titi doesn't seems to know the definition of rotation and for some stupid reasons Barca signed Song last year. Also, they are favoring Fabregas over him, although Thiago has been in the same level and is the natural heir to Xavi. Tito played Xavi like SAF played Van Persie, even in the games when Barca had mathematically won title, he continued playing Xavi in favor of Thiago. Add to that, that Barca have now signed Neymar who plays in a position that for some games has been occupiedin many games by Fabregas, which mean that Fabregas will play even more games in midfield, making even less room for Thiago to feature. If it was Pep it would have been ok, but Tito (and Roura) mismanaged him.

Also a fact that many people are forgetting is the money factor. Barca are very generous to pay the new signings, but not their home grown players. I read in an article that Song is their fifth most paid player, while Busquets earns 35k a week (about 4 times less than Busquets). Thiago seems to be even lower (around 30k if I am not mistaken). While money most likely isn't the primary motivator, it is always nice trebling them

Right, the weekend is here. I'm ready to give my all to this now. Count me in.

That's to do with when the Busquets contract was signed - it was very early in his Barca career and although Thiago is a top class talent, his current role doesn't justify a high wage (saying that, either does Song).

Anyone have an idea of how Barca are doing financially? Surely they're pushing their own wage boundaries with the amount of high profile players they have?

Prepare to get disappointed then, clubs rarely announce transfer deals on weekends!

One of Thiago's friends says this:

Falqué Iago: "Thiago will have more minutes in Manchester"

The former teammate Thiago in the youth ranks of Barça has said that "change is the same level, it is a great big one."

The Almeria player Iago Falqué, which coincided with Thiago Alcantara several years in the youth ranks of Barça and he played, among other teams, Tottenham and Southampton, has said in 'The Network Ràdio' to the probable place of his former teammate at Manchester United that "Thiago advise you to learn English especially, when I left I had pretty bad and adaptation is very important"

Iago added that "Barca will go to Manchester but the change is of the same level, it is a big big one. At Manchester will have more minutes in the club".

The player has also commented that "Thiago is an incredible player, that in one or two years will be among the best in the world. I'm happy for him, you go to a big club."

I recall it was Iago Falque (and Gai Assulin) that led me start following Barca's youth team and discover my man (well, at the time, 'boy' :nervous:) love for Mr Alcantara. He stood out the most for me in that team, wearing the #10 shirt at the time and playing behind the striker. Couldn't understand why the main hype wasn't about him. If I recall, he was referred to as a 'Brazilian' at that time, so maybe Barca didn't give as much of a shit about him. Dunno. He's already turned out the best of the lot. Krkic was in that team too.

If Isco joins City and we don't get our own little Spanish toy I'll go fecking mental. Seriously though, let's not get too disheartened by one article which provides no new credible information.

Well Woodward better not bother coming into work if this isn't done by Monday.

Graham Hunter, who works on Spanish football for Sky's Spanish football programme, and has connections within the Catalan club, said yesterday that the Thiago and Manchester United deal was close enough for wages to be agreed, which makes it sound imminent.

We may be wrong, and for the sanity of many panicking Manchester United fans we hope we are, but we just can't see an announcement on this as soon as some hope, even if the deal was to be completed as far as it can be without a medical. Thiago is determined to enjoy his holiday and David Moyes is technically still on his.
It's also hard to think that Barcelona won't try one last move to keep the player, but a pay-rise was all but ruled out by several in the Spanish media who said it would set a bad example after he got one just last year. There's every possibility that if a move does happen, Thiago will receive the wrath of the Barcelona friendly media and be painted as the bad guy.

This article is from much earlier in the day, but those parts in particular sound promising, especially about Barca ruling out a pay-rise

Is the older Busquets brother the higher paid one? I'll assume he is.

Thiago's entourage denies personal terms have been agreed with Man United. Still considering future, although almost made his mind up [rac1]

Well that almost makes it seem like we've been wasting our time since yesterday.

Fair enough. Ive not read through the thread much as I have certain degree of cynicism when it comes to transfers like this. Seems promising from what you say though.

Graham Hunter never said we'd agreed terms, he said we were close. That's basically how you can interpret that tweet from barcastuff.
Good man ya are. That's the way to muppet, see the positive in every negative story, and pull your willy out at every sign of something positive, no matter how minor.

Gambit would be proud.

Seems like more or less the right status on the entire episode. Player finishes his under 21 commitments and goes home to his agent/dad and thinks about his future. Seems like he almost has made up his mind, allowing Barcelona a wee bit room to convince him otherwise, else he's coming here. Our persuasiveness at this time will also matter, however I'm not sure if we'll give any player guarantees on starting role.

Lot of stuff doing the rounds on twitter right now that say Thiago is on the verge of agreeing an improved contract with Barca and that this has all been a ruse. I feel dirty even reporting it.

I'm still in the improved contract camp myself, it ensures minimum hurt.

I wouldn't be surprised. If it's true, I hope it's over soon.

If we don't get him, then I hope this is why, rather than him picking another club.

Still be gutting if we didn't get him. He's very much what we need. Has the potential to be the best around eventually, and in a situation where we don't seem likely to be financially outmuscled.
