Thiago Alcantara at Bayern

meh, good luck to them both
if we weren't his first choice then he'd have never stuck around long even if we had signed him.

All this while he was just using us to bargain another contract :(

this thread needs to be closed and hidden - why prolong the suffering?

There are far too many bitter, spoilt and deluded fans on the forum. Get a fecking grip fellas. What has the lad done to warrant the barrage of abuse and bad wishes he has got over the last 7 pages? I hope he does well in Germany and ousts the likes on Iniesta and Xavi from the Spain WC squad. We don't know and never will know the full ins and outs of any potential deal to United (if indeed there was one), so how can we go throwing shit at him.

Now, that is really disappointing. Really. Reaaaally.

I'll hate loving to watch Bayern next season.

:D:D:D

Just a shame for Scholesy that we couldnt complete his dream left sided combination of Anderson at left back and Thiago on the left wing with Modric and Cleverley in the middle

You forgot Norwood.

If David Moyes presumed that running a club with a bank vault full of cash, a princely reputation and a world class squad would entitle him to a simpler life than the one he was accustomed to at Everton, then the whirlwind start he has encountered at Manchester United would have dispelled any such notion.

The conjecture that surrounds Wayne Rooney’s future remains, despite Moyes’ insistence that the striker’s future lies at Old Trafford, while Thiago's decision to snub the English champions in favour of teaming up with Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich represents a significant early setback.

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY

United are no strangers to missing out on big-name targets in recent years. From Ronaldinho in 2003 and Arjen Robben in 2004, the Red Devils have seen Karim Benzema, Mesut Ozil, David Villa, Samir Nasri, Wesley Sneijder and Lucas Moura all decide against moving to Old Trafford. And the latest example leaves Moyes pondering a puzzle that even Sir Alex Ferguson failed to solve... how do you replace Paul Scholes?

The decision to bring him out of retirement was a damning indictment of United's midfielders, while it was also cited as one of the reasons Paul Pogba left the club last summer. Make no mistake, United's need for Thiago would have been significantly diminished had the talented Frenchman been retained.

But despite that - and any talk of Rooney's future - Moyes' priority is now to find a long-term answer to United’s midfield conundrum. The declarations of Ed Woodward, the club's executive vice president, that there is a possibility of breaking the transfer record this summer indicates that a lack of funding should not represent a barrier to Moyes’ ambitions.

Tellingly, Moyes himself has acknowledged that the midfield needs reinforcing - which is more than his predecessor managed in recent years.

"We are short there and will look to strengthen," he told the Sunday Times. It has been claimed recently that Thiago was not necessarily Moyes' first choice, and while he would certainly have been a popular signing among United fans, the suggestions are that the Scot has got his fingers in a number of other pies.

"We’re working hard to get the first transfer in and to make sure it's the right one," he added. "I've been left a really good team and I want to add to it sensibly."

Sensible seems to be the watch word at Old Trafford these days. Moyes, of course, was seen as the sensible choice to replace Sir Alex. After working on a tight budget at Goodison Park, the 50-year-old certainly knows how to spend his money wisely, too.

But let it not be said that United weren't extremely keen on signing Thiago. Representatives of both club and player met on several occasions, and a £120,000-per-week contract was laid on the table in order to lure him from Catalunya. The promise of first-team football went hand-in-hand with the offer as United prepared to make the 22-year-old a key part of their plans.

But the interest of his former coach Pep Guardiola - as well as the chance to play for the European champions - blew United out of the water. It was undoubtedly a setback, and the public nature of it means Moyes will have to recover both strongly and quickly.

The task he faces at Old Trafford has been well documented but the importance of his summer business cannot be understated. Football clubs, especially Manchester United, rarely interest themselves in appeasing the media or fans yet Moyes knows that his every move this summer will be pored over in forensic detail.

A big-name signing would go a long way to ease the pressure, but Moyes will be more concerned with what any new arrival can offer United on the pitch than how many shirts they could sell.

Finding the right balance will be one of the biggest decisions Moyes has to make in his entire career. With concerns in some quarters that Sir Alex's departure might signal a decline similar to the one that afflicted the club following Sir Matt Busby's retirement in 1969, finding the central midfield presence so sorely missed at Old Trafford in recent years could prove invaluable.

Whereas Thiago is undoubtedly talented and full of promise, Moyes may be more inclined to go for somebody with Premier League experience.

Talk of a move for Cesc Fabregas has resurfaced now that his former Barca team-mate is out of bounds, and snatching him away from Camp Nou - and the inevitable overtures of former club Arsenal - would be an aggressive show of intent.

Elsewhere, it remains to be seen how new Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti plans to use Luka Modric but the former Tottenham schemer would set pulses racing in Manchester. Juventus' Claudio Marchisio has also been mentioned fleetingly.

Such fanciful name dropping will serve little purpose for Moyes. Plans are undoubtedly in place, secret negotiations ongoing - and nobody would bet against a surprise signing in the coming days. Indeed, United have made concrete moves to sign Ezequiel Garay from Benfica. There will be a number of others on the radar, however.

Protestations from the boardroom that United can spend upwards of £80m on one player were no doubt handily timed to coincide with Thiago's rejection, while Moyes' pulling power at the top table has now been legitimately questioned.

With Thiago snatched away in a very public fashion by Guardiola, many at United will be wondering about their current standing in the world game. And with Ferguson gone and what seems a gaping hole left in the middle of the pitch, Moyes can go a long way to making things right with his summer dealings.

It's hard to be annoyed at Thiago/Pep/Bayern without knowing exactly what our conduct/dealings with this transfer were. For all we know, we properly fecked about/tried to penny pinch/wouldn't accept this alleged clause (which would be really daft - if we never played the bloke, we'd be happy to get £20m for him, and if we did play him, the clause would be void surely?!) and maybe it ended up doing us in... in which case, we'd only have ourselves to blame.

Having said that, I'd laugh if he spends more time on the bench then in the first team.

Hm so it seems based on the aforementioned article, Moyes favoured Cesc over Thiago. Perhaps we thought after agreeing all terms with the player, it wouldn't take much to prise him from Barca's hands. Since we bid for Thiago before, it is hard for me to say we were never interested. If we weren't then I think Bayern would have wrapped up the deal sooner. Good luck to Thiago. Perfect signing in my eyes and I think we'll come to regret missing out on him.

I just saw we bid for Fabregas as well. Moyes should say it's Fabregas or no one.

Sounds like he's going to take Xavi's number at Bayern. Predictably, he cited Guardiola as a big reason for the move

Any Deutsch speakers care to translate?

Nothing interesting really. He chose Bayern because it's a club with a huge history, because we played very attractive football last season and he's sure it will be even better with Pep. The team is very versatile with strong physical players but also technical very gifted and very efficient in front of the goal. One of the best teams in the world.

Ppl are blaming Moyes however it was clear that as soon as Guardiola put his request in, Thiago would go running and I don't think even SAF would have convinced him to come to United simply because of the pep factor. Never mind, this is not the end of the world, there are other targets out there for us. A lot of midfielders for Bayern though.

@FCBarca how did his comment go down that joining Bayern was one of the happiest days in his life? A bit of a slap in the face for Barca fans I reckon? Especially after you lot getting trashed by Bayern last season.

A bit gutted about this transfer to be honest, as at one point it did seem very feasible, never mind though. I am not going to lose any sleep about it, and although I would like to see him fail at bayern and sit on the bench i am not going constantly check up on his progress.

I just cannot get my head around the move as bayern have arguably got more in midfield than barca do. It's evident the Pep is a huge factor, and there was nothing we could do about that.

onwards and upwards though!

@NoLogo, I think someone else posted a quote of his from a few seasons ago when he pointed out his dream wasn't to succeed at Barcelona but to succeed in football. He was never a lifer like many of the cantera players are. I'm sure there will be some, among fans & socios, who are looking forward to seeing less of Mazinho, as well. Pep is a hero for him, like most midfielders at the club so I understand his happiness. But a new league, new team, new language and new style won't come without it's hurdles

Personally, I have no hard feelings. It's tough on the club but I've already commented on this ad nauseum, it should've never come to this to begin with had he been handled better. Insult to injury, we're still stuck with Cesc

Interesting. So I take it you are not too happy with him so far? I always felt he did pretty well for your club especially considering that he was most of the time played out of position. Especially after Messi got injured I thought he was a main contributer of carrying Barca over the line in the league together with Iniesta.

Bayern Munich's latest signing Thiago Alcantara has revealed why he joined the Champions League winners over Manchester United.

The Spain Under-21 captain has been among David Moyes' top targets this summer, but with a move looking likely, Bayern swooped in to clinch his signature for 20million Euros.
Just prior to the move, former Barcelona manager and current Bayern boss Pep Guardiola spoke to the media about his admiration for the player.
And it would seem it was Guardiola's influence that swung the deal in favour of the German club.
"I played under him in the (Barcelona) youth team and I've got him to thank for everything that I have achieved so far," he said in Munich.
"I never had a coach like him. He's unique.
"After the European Under-21 Championship, I spoke with Guardiola on the phone and, after that, I decided to come to Bayern.
"I discussed last season and the upcoming season with the club. I wanted a new challenge."
Thiago joins Mario Gotze as one of two new faces expected to strengthen a Bayern side which won everything last season.
"I think it's fantastic," said Bayern's chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge at the player's official presentation.
"The coach now has a big squad to choose from and there is of course a big competition for places.
"We didn't buy him because he knows the Barcelona way, but because he's a gifted footballer."
He has already demonstrated that for both for club and country, scoring a hat-trick in Spain's European Under-21 Championship final victory over Italy earlier this summer, having established himself as a regular in the Blaugrana side before reaching the age of 21.
He is now ready for the next step in his career with Bayern - the only club he could have imagined joining after Barca.
"It's a special city with a particular flair," he said. "There's a real passion for football in the city.
"There are few teams as strong as Bayern and Barcelona. This is a fantastic side. I don't want to mention any names in particular, I'm just looking forward to playing with every single one of them."
His first appearance for Bayern could well come against the Catalans next Wednesday in a mouth-watering pre-season friendly at the Allianz Arena.
"I'm fit and ready," said Thiago. "Barcelona have some exceptional players and they've all wished me lots of luck and all the best, but I'm ready to face my former team-mates."

So as i've been saying, were we ever in for him.

So he spoke with Pep on the phone after the Euro U21, and that was that. To think we were in that old thread talking about DDG writing on his matchball, that fan getting him to sign a United shirt and his father selling his restaurant with all those twitter bollocks with Graham Hunter. It was all hopelessly pointless in the end

And someone should just ask him whether we were at any point made an offer for him

Thiago told in the press conference that he already talked with Guardiola prior to the U21 Euro. Pep told him he should concentrate on the tournament first and they will talk afterwards about his future and Thiago thanked Bayern for their patience, because they gave him enough time to make up his mind. Looks like Bayern were in the pole position the whole time thanks to Pep.

Also Rummenigge said that he talked to Rosell several times and that he got the impression that Barca would prefer to sell Thiago to Bayern, if they can't convince him to stay. Sounded a lot like the only other club really interested in signing him was Real Madrid and Barca clearly didn't want to loose Thiago to their domestic rival, so Bayern and Barca reached an agreement quickly after Thiago made his decision.
