Gaming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

So my noob moment of the weekend is that it turns out I have to equip abilities for them to have any affect... who knew. No wonder I wasnt able t access the dialogue options with the delusion ability.

Happened to me too.

Worst part is that I'm pretty that I didn't make that mistake last time I attempted a play through.

Anyway, it might come in handy for the 'Jenny o' the Wood' witch contract I'm struggling with atm. Every time she splits into three she gets back to full health!

I bloody hated that contract, she's such a pain.

Really annoying when you play someone at Gwent and they have awesome cards, you beat them, and you get some fecking shitty card worth 4 in return.

Played a smithy in Skellige who has Ciri and Geralt, both worth 15, and took 5 attempts to beat him, only to get a rubbish Vampire for my troubles. Snot fair!

Jenny O' the Wood isn't that bad. Moon dust/Yrden with spectre oil and then just pummel her. When she splits in 3, same thing but keep quen up to stop them draining your health when they hit you. I beat her in seconds last time, then went down in one hit to the group of bandits near where you fight her.

I barely used alchemy, if at all on my first play through as it seemed a right arse on, played through on death march (highest difficulty too) and got my arse proper handed to me off random encounters a few times, nothing worse than being unprepared and running into drowners so you try to run away and run into some water hags so you peg it again and run into ghouls, so again you run and somehow you manage to get mixed in between all of them and have no chance. Oh the good times!

Can't wait for my next play through of this.

Just rewatched all the trailers the other day too. The cinematic ones are epic. I'd watch a film if it was all made like that. The hearts of stone DLC trailer is also awesome.

Man, I might just book a week off work off for another play through!!
Yeah the trailers are great. Decided to watch some of them again after reading your comment

Too good

Packs of dogs, wolves, or drowners are the most dangerous enemies in the game, bosses included.

First time in years I actually know what people are talking about when reading a game thread. I quite miss playing it already.

Probably Keira, if he's that early in the game.

Found out yesterday the fecker had that figured out before he asked, it was just meant as a clever pun, which he felt was obvious/

I don't have a problem with most of the regional accents in this game, and most of them sound fairly natural in game, but the 'Ladies of the Rhondda Valleys' cracks me up.

Yeah we're swimming in witches over here, was nice to see them get some representation in such a good video game.

I really like all the voice acting in the game, apart from Lambert and Dandelion as random American guys.

Think i've just finished up on the main quest at Velen. There's so much more stuff on that map I need to do

I managed to get the POI to show on the map in the end. Turns out I had disabled them in the options menu in order to use friendly HUD.

How big is Novigrad? Please don't say it's bigger than Velen. I don't have the time for all of this :(

I dunno, I didn't mind the acting but I remember a lot of the voices not fitting the characters.
Maybe I'm just honing in my selective memory for the good stuff: Bloody Baron, The Crones, Gaunter O'Dimm, most of Skellige etc...

It's smaller. Velen is a huge no-mans-land wartorn region, whereas Novigrad is a 'free city' which is densely populated with a mixture of rich and poor inhabitants.

Triss' accent sticks out the most, I think. Everyone I had encountered in the game was from Ye Olde Medieval times and then I met her and was like "Where the feck is she supposed to be from?"

Novigrad proper is basically just the city, which is obviously a lot smaller than Velen. It's a huge city with a stupendous amount of stuff to do though. If you put all of the areas outside of Velen on that map together - Novigrad, Grassy Knoll just to the south of the city, Gustfields to the east and the city of Oxenfurt (small compared to Novigrad but still puts cities in most open world games to shame) - you have a significant part of the map left, though not quite as large as Velen.

And then you haven't even left the Northern Realms. :D

So apparently the shit starting armour I got rid of a few hours in, but so long ago I can't remember if I sold it or broke it down, I should have kept and upgraded as it's amongst the best in the game?

fecks sake

Really? I'm halfway through a second playthrough of the game and I've never heard of this.

It's wrong. You can upgrade them once, but they are early game gear only.
Of course there may be mods which add more levels of upgrades, making them an option for the entire game.

Okay thanks, maybe I misunderstood the thing I read then. It sounded like it was Witcher armour and it shouldn't be sold off as you need to upgrade it throughout the game.

I've a lot to learn on this game to be fair.

You get much better witcher armour later on.

I'm so into this game now. I feel like I could just play it forever (which is probably how long it's going to take to get through it at the rate i'm going). I've just been given the quest to go visit the Bloody Baron (which is not far at all), yet i've clocked up about 6 or 7 hours. I'm still miles away until the Ladies of the Wood quest as well, which is where I left off last time (and is also not far at all).

I'm also stressing over the same old stuff I did last time... which items to sell, which to dismantle, where I can find the best gear, where to spend my ability points (which I haven't spent a single one yet).

Any answers to these would be appreciated.

Also, on Death March, do the question marks not appear on the map for points of interest?

If you want the game to become ridiculously easy, even on death march, then you are going to want an alchemy decoction build. But for most enjoyment and a fair amount of challenge just build any sensible combination you like. My first playthrough I used fast attack abilities + signs. It was far from optimal but got the job done, just make sure you have quen. For most builds you will want the alternate quen ability for healing, only a few builds (like the decoction one) don't really need it. Do the quests for the witcher gears when you are the right level.

P.S The broken decoction combo is Ekhidna + Archgriffin.

Wait for Skellige and its waters.

I thought all the stuff in the Skellige's waters was too much of a pain to get but I found myself sailing the seas for it when I got Blood & Wine. Toussaint is extremely expensive.

It'll be a real shame if they never make another Witcher game. Yes I know it's based on the books but they could happily invent a new story along the same lines.
