Gaming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

I don't know how to describe it. Feels clunky to me, especially sword attacks. Maybe I suck at chaining them?
Maybe ;) Actually TW3 has very fluid combat when you're used to it and know when to attack, dodge, use signs, etc.
Could your framerate be an issue? What system are you playing on?

Nah I'm playing with 60 fps. I think
I just don't enjoy the combat, switching between signs, dodging, chaining melee attacks etc :(

i just spam dodge at the moment, don't get hit that often doing that. i always forget to use signs and stuff though.

I think it just seems clunky because it's not your usual hack & slash style of combat. You really have to dodge & parry more than most games and so maybe seems a little unnatural. Once you get the technique down, it's very fluid.

It's a cracking game mate. This said I've barely played more than 20 hours on it and I've had it for three months.

I have too many games and feck all time to play even half of them
Those ten hours have mainly been spent wandering around and picking plants, killing geese and robbing peasants of what little they have...I've only done a few missions...the scale of it is unreal...

It'll click for you mate, especially as you get the more interesting cards :)

Think I'm getting the hang of it. That tip about having fewer cards in your deck was so obvious in hindsight, but it's been an absolute game changer for me. Thanks for that.

Started a new play through on PC. Already recognise a few names from the first book in the 'Devil by the Well' quest.

I have long way to go before I get close to where I was on my Xbox play through (I'd just met the three witches, which is not far at all i'm guessing).

Out of interest, is it safe to play the game without the books being spoilt at all?
All of the games take place after the books, and since Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri are pretty much the three main characters in the book saga you'll inevitably encounter some spoilers. However, several major characters and events that drive the plot, especially later on in the saga don't seem to be mentioned in the games, so there's a lot of value in reading the books even if you've completed all the games. Still waiting on the official translation of the last book so I don't even know how they end.

None of the games are canon by the way. The book saga is supposed to have a definite ending and the games are basically glorified fan-fiction. CDProjekt Red did an excellent job keeping the tone of the books intact in the games though.

Guys is there any reason for getting the normal version over the game of the year version? I'm planning to buy this game but as I don't normally play RPG games I'm not sure it the extra $13 for the game of the year version will be worth it.
They're two of my favorite DLCs I can think of. One of them might be my favorite questline in the game, though I won't say which...
So, i got this on PS4 back when it released but only got to like the Griffin fight (just past that actually). I stopped playing mostly because i'm not near my PS4 enough to really have a good session in the game, and partly cos i was a bit shit at the combat. So i'm now thinking, i have my laptop with me like all the time and it ought to run the game no problem. With the sale that's on, i'm finding it pretty much impossible to resist jumping in on PC with the GOTY edition (and therefore all the DLC included). So, i just wanted to ask if the PC version supports the DS4 controller and er, any tips for the combat :D
Yes, one of the last big patches enabled DS4 support. Which threw me for one hell of a loop that consisted of hours of Phil Jones-face level of exasperation since I was using a DS4 emulating program and didn't know about that detail. It had Geralt stumbling around like a baby deer on an acid trip.

Tips for combat? Dodge and roll. Grenades, the 'great wind' (I was never good with names), and fire spells are your friends; they're great for crowd control. Which is important as crowds of baddies, even common ones, are more difficult than bosses in this game.

I just can't get into this game. I've restarted it about 3 times because I'd reach around the Griffin part and stop for a few months before deciding to pick it up again. I honestly think it's the combat making me lose interest.

I was the same, and didn't like the game at all.
Think i'm just not patient enough, i just want to hack and slash them in the face...
Didn't work, so i gave them the game back. The guy that sold it to me, was so shocked that in sympathy he gave me 100% back :p

After reading everyone's comment here and other places, i think i maybe should have given it another chance, and try to be more patient in the fights.

play it on the easiest difficulty, just for the story and the scenery.

Finished a lot of quests and now I'm level 13. It does just get better and better, it's great fun and there's just so much choice. Shame I wont be having time to play until the summer, but then again I have something to look forward to.

Also, I shagged the witch. Didn't see that coming, so that was a nice touch.

Which which?

Probably Keira, if he's that early in the game.

I'm so into this game now. I feel like I could just play it forever (which is probably how long it's going to take to get through it at the rate i'm going). I've just been given the quest to go visit the Bloody Baron (which is not far at all), yet i've clocked up about 6 or 7 hours. I'm still miles away until the Ladies of the Wood quest as well, which is where I left off last time (and is also not far at all).

I'm also stressing over the same old stuff I did last time... which items to sell, which to dismantle, where I can find the best gear, where to spend my ability points (which I haven't spent a single one yet).

Any answers to these would be appreciated.

Also, on Death March, do the question marks not appear on the map for points of interest?

They do appear but like with all difficulties you need to go to bounty boards first to get them.

You should only really sell crappy weapons and armor and junk (but not animal pelts). Most other stuff helps for crafting potions and armor etc.

You'll come across plenty of good gear on the main quests and hunts but you will get witcher gear quests which are worth doing when you are of the recommended levels as you can keep improving that gear every 7/8 levels and it's usually the best armor out there at those levels, plus the end game versions of them tend to be the best armor in the game.

If you're on death match look up a build guide for ability points. Generally it's going to be in fast attack, quen and the poisonous parts of alchemy. Also there's an ability points that regenerates health during the day which is invaluable on death March.

I got this on release. Played it none stop for like 2 weeks or so and was absolutely loving it. For some reason I ended up putting it to one side and now I can't go back to my save because I have forgotten to much. I'm a fool.

Nothing wrong with playing from the start again. It's worth it.

Every time I see this thread I feel depressed because I already finished it and actually did NewGame+ as well.

I can't really come to terms with the thought that I'll never play it again, but I doubt I have the energy and mental dedication to play it through fully for a third time.

I feel like I could ruin my view of it if I went back in again. Maybe I should just let it go and cherish the amazing memories, and accept that it's over.

Yeah, I considered it too, but I really don't think I could take a third time without tainting my experience in some way. Maybe I'll come back to it in a year or so and replay. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see an RPG (or even any genre of game) top it for a while.

Just did Witcher contracts for the Shrieker and the Grave Hag and had so much fun. Got some serious Dark Souls vibes from them as far as difficulty goes. What on earth would I do without Quen?

I'm probably going to get carpal tunnel from the amount of dodge spamming I'm doing for this game.

I'm playing it on difficulty level 2/4 (sword and story) and with my playstyle I'm only needing to invest ability points in combat (apart from one quen upgrade and one axii upgrade). Is anyone finding it necessary to invest points in other areas (particularly at higher difficulty levels)?

Alchemy is a must for the highest difficulty. The decoctions are vital at keeping you alive since you take so much damage.

I barely used alchemy, if at all on my first play through as it seemed a right arse on, played through on death march (highest difficulty too) and got my arse proper handed to me off random encounters a few times, nothing worse than being unprepared and running into drowners so you try to run away and run into some water hags so you peg it again and run into ghouls, so again you run and somehow you manage to get mixed in between all of them and have no chance. Oh the good times!

Can't wait for my next play through of this.

Just rewatched all the trailers the other day too. The cinematic ones are epic. I'd watch a film if it was all made like that. The hearts of stone DLC trailer is also awesome.

Man, I might just book a week off work off for another play through!!

Might be the best trailer ever, for me. Convinced me to get it day one despite knowing nothing of the previous two games.

I'm on my third play through, got to the first bit where it really branches, couldn't decide what to do and turned it off in confusion. Got the choice of going looking for the Pellar or Witch. It may be my flu addled mind, but I just couldn't make a decision which to go for first.

Having Aerondight has turned me a bit murderous, before I'd only really bother with monsters if they attacked me, got in the way or were contracts. Now I'm looking for them so I can keep levelling it up. Using very under levelled Manticore armour too purely because it boosts crit damage by 25% and when fully charged every hit Aerondight does is a crit. It took down the griffin super quick despite level scaling being on.

I've literally spent the entire morning exploring. Many bandit camps have been pillaged.

I just managed to grab some guarded treasure from some big level 14 flying monster and ran :D

I'm still not getting the green question marks on my map. I think I prefer it without them but still confused as to why they are not there.

Severance rune stone (from Hearts of Stone DLC merchant) + whirl =

Worth every penny that cnut was for that rune alone.
Add the Ekimmara decoction (every hit regenerates health) to that and you're pissing through enemies.

Try not to OP on the shield, rune, perk stuff though.

The game is way too easy as it is, let alone when you overpower yourself. It's like Shadow of Mordor in that respect. Leave health regen to food and maybe the Quen shield at lower levels, trust me it's far more fun to maintain the challenge or the enjoyment of the simplistic combat just wanes.

Weirdly I find the hardest enemies to deal with in the entire game to wild dogs. It's hard to know when they are going to lunge and they do a ton of damage.
