Gaming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Haven't they just said that it was Geralt's last game, not necessarily the last Witcher universe game?
I don't see where they can take it from here, in terms of narrative. Geralt isn't just a character in the world of The Witcher books and games, he is The Witcher. The only character other than him that could carry the series going forwards is Ciri, but how will they build a convincing narrative around her, giving her a significant threat to face, after all they've achieved in The Witcher 3? The only other option is to go all the way back to a time when witchers were still a constant presence in the world, but there is very little about this in the lore of the witcher to build on. I think it's better for everyone involved to let The Witcher 3 stand as the closing piece of the entire Witcher universe.

You may be right. The only character that stands out is Ciri, but yeah... Maybe Lambert although he's not the most exciting character, or some hitherto unknown Witcher. But Geralt and the universe is all based on books, yeah? It may be difficult for them to build something outside of canon.

Dunno, I'd back CDPR to pull that off and I'd be excited by that. I guess we'll have to judge them based on their new game coming out to see how they cope without the novels giving them a narrative push (I know they're different worlds, but it should hopefully give us an idea of what they're capable of).

My life has become permanently worse after finishing this game. Not even Harry Potter got me this emotionally-invested in something not real.

Absolute miracle of a video game.

I quit playing it after

The Bloody Baron hanged himself because of my actions :(:(:(

Couldn't continue after that.

Finally got round to getting this. Only in the first pub so far, but I'm impressed with the graphics and voice acting. The combat is light years ahead of the crap that was Witcher 1.

Having never played any Witcher game, nor do I know what the feck it's about...I'm looking at getting something to play on the Xbox and I've almost settled on this...

Now I like open world games, such as Tomb Raider and Metal Gear Solid, so will i like this? It's not all wizards and dragons and shit is it?

Someone sell it to me in the next half an hour, and I'll decide then...

It's more like tattoos, tits and politics. Also, monsters. You massacre tons of monsters. You can also get drunk and dress up as a woman. You will also be asked to retrieve an old lady's frying pan, as well as murder a king and star in a play in a city. You can investigate murders and hunt for treasure.

And if you like games within games then you can waste an obscene amount of time with Gwent which is a card game with the characters that are in the game anyway. Do you like horse racing? You can do it. Do you like boxing for money? You can do it. Do you like spending hours looking through potions recipes? You can do that, too.

Oh, and a playthrough takes 100+ hours. Be warned. That is without the DLCs.

Tell us more about the tits part.

It's fantastic. I hated the first one, but this one deserves all the plaudits it's received. Sailing in your boat as the sun is rising on the horizon is one of the most pleasurable experiences in gaming.

Got this for Christmas. However, the posts above seem more like a warning than an advertisement. :( Will I be spending more time on this than Skyrim? Think I logged close to 190 hours on that.

Probably, yeah. Especially if you include the DLCs.
Whats the difference?
The GOTY edition includes the two DLCs (both of which are like 10+ and 20+ hour expansions).

But yeah, definitely buy the game. @Siorac covered the basics. It's filled with ocean-deep character development, uncharacteristically intriguing sidequests (RPGs are normally famed for monotonous fetch quests) and constantly forces you into morally grey decisions.
The attention to detail isn't restricted to the multitudes of side characters, but also the background environment. This was the first time a game showed me the gritty dirty reality of a feudal-era countryside.

Choices really do matter too, you're not just following a predetermined path where everything turns out fine no matter what.

I've had this for ages but not put any time into it.

Can I avoid having to mess around with potions and spells, are do you need to understand them?

Potions I barely used.
Spells or "signs" they're easy to use, just the shoulder buttons, really intuitive. You can basically play the game as you see fit. You could play it focusing on sword play, or leveling up the signs etc. There are so many different options

Excellent game, played it about a year ago although haven't done the expansions yet. I do feel that not playing the earlier ones put me at a slight disadvantage lorewise, but still fine as a standalone game.

I would probably put it behind Mass Effect for emotional investment, but again that may be due to me not having played 1 or 2.

You can go all in on fighting skill points and the various grenade types for your skill points if you want. Might make the first bit of the game a bit difficult if you're playing on the highest difficulty; without combat PC mods you get OP a bit into the game.

Also got this for Christmas, and hoping it doesn't have the Skyrim problem where the side-questlines were a lot more interesting than the main one.

You're the worst, you waste any amount of time on GTA and the division and you haven't smashed through the witcher yet? Come on swoosh!

You won't need to feck on with potions and stuff aslong as you don't try to complete it on death march. The magic (signs) you will use but its as simple as using your skills in the division really. Get it completed!!

I envy the people who have not started or finished this game. You're in for the best time of your life.

I think it says so much about how good this game is when you can spend 20 hours playing meaningful content in one city on its own (Novigrad).

I luckily played and completed this and the expansions over a time I was unemployed and God was it glorious. I have absolutely no clue how people do it when working full time, as there's not a chance I'd make the time for it now.

Exactly, I played it when I just finished Uni and had the whole lazy summer to play it and watch the Copa America last year. Spent so much time on it at ungodly hours when everyone else was asleep. Great times. Now I work and so can only fit in a game or two of FIFA a day. We got lucky with the timing.

This game is pretty sick. Hadn't put any time into a videogame since GTA Vice City, and I was obsessed with online CoD and CoD2 on PC between 2004-2006, even went to LAN parties with some friends and we were really deep into the clanbase competitions.

Only reason I bought a PS4 two years ago is to play some FIFA with colleagues, which is pretty fun, especially when there's a little money at stake. But I figured I might as well use my well deserved three weeks off to see what real videogaming is like in 2016. So I ordered this game 10 days ago and started playing. The first two hours were a bit meh, for example I felt the step from GTA 2 in 2D on my PS1 back in 1999 to III or Vice City in 3D a couple years later was much more 'revolutionary'.

But then you realise how absurdly detailed this game is, and that the possibilities are nearly endless. The graphics somehow really grew on me too, maybe it was dark in the beginning or my tv is shite or something, but at first I was not that impressed. But now when the sun shines and you go for a dive and you can clearly see everything underwater it's pretty amazing. I think I'm only at level 7 after 30 hours or so, because there's just so much to discover. The fighting is pretty epic when you get the hang of those spells and I like the potions too. And I just roam around on my horse for hours, looking for weird and forgotten houses to loot stuff and then you'll eventually end up in some weird quest or situation.

The storyline is amazing too, I've only played with Ciri other than main protagonist and I've no idea what more there is in store - most of the female characters have unrealisticly perfect tits and unlogically low cut tops by the way, I'd have preferred a more natural look to be honest - but I have a feeling the story will just be getting more complex and better and better.

I've played some GTA 5 at a friend's when it just came out, it's defnitely a marvelous game. My original plan was to just buy that one, but then I got a good deal on the Witcher and I'm verry happy with it. It's been been a blast, I can definitely see why people have spent hundreds of hours on this game. A shame I'll be way too busy to play after January 6th, but in the summer I'll defnitely 'finish' it. Also going to let my girl try this one out, she's never been into real videogames at all, but I have no doubt she'll love it.

Love how you threw this in like it was super relevant to the storyline  You can bet someone, somewhere has made a mod for that (PC platform-wise)

Once you get to Skellige you'll get what you want. (I mean old, saggy, granny tits).

Potions are actually the most fun way of playing, and the most witchery, when you got into it. But if you don't want to or can't take the time to get deep enough into the system to make a potions build work, then fear not, relying solely on swordmanship with a few spells on the side is easily viable.

All of you lot who are contemplating buying it just bloody do it!

You won't regret it.

I wish I could reset my brain and do it all over again without remembering any of it. I'm trying to achieve this with alcohol but so far no success.

Reasons why I die playing the Witcher 3:

Single boss killed me - 5%
Group clusterf*ck - 10%
Fall damage - 85%

I don't think I've ever died from falling

Usually die because I learn the attack pattern, do it perfectly, they get low health and I try one extra attack instead of my normal sequence and get feckin marmalised for it.
Since I've reduced fall damage and re-balanced combat: 5%, 90%, 5%. I still manage somehow to die from falls...

You young people think fall damage in TW3 is bad? You know nuffin!
Seriously, in the launch version a missed stair step killed you. They already reduced fall damage A LOT in later updates. ;)
