Anyone got any tips for the final boss? I can get passed the first stage easily but the second is causing me some problems. That bat attack is ridiculously powerful and I can't seem to dodge it.
The bat attack is a OHK if it hits despite what you've got up. As soon as he charges it up run (holding x) at a 90 degree angle and it should miss you. IF you time a dive right it should do the same thing, but I found that harder. The key is to get to the side of it.

Like people have said, running is the key. As soon as he starts calling in the bats run away from him until you've put a good distance between you and him, then go at a 90 degree angle away from him. It should miss you 99% of the time. The big problem is the sticky things he leaves behind. You're kind of running blind so there's a chance you might hit one.
About 200 hours put into this and I'm still finding new stuff. Sailing around Skellige and a huge ghost ship rose out of the water. Actually gave me a fright.
Beat the Blood and Wine expansion yesterday. Will probably go back and see if there is anything I have missed another time but it was a hell of a good adventure. The new world was beautiful and had plenty of secrets. I loved the quests, as some were the best in the series. A great addition to the best game I have ever played. Shame it is all over but am looking forward to seeing what the developers do with their new game.
One thing that bugged me though:
I loved the fact that Yennefer visited me at the end of the game but as soon as she finished talking she just walked into the bedroom and stared at the back wall like something out of the Blair Witch Project. Thought that bit was a little disappointing.
I'm massively struggling food-wise on this. I'm down to my last 3 beers and then I'm out, despite spending ages looting a few days ago. What things can I do to make this less of an issue, considering I'm only Level 8/9?

Nah pretty easy to find iirc. Surprised you haven't got it already, I decided to help that herbalists friend which requires you to brew it quite early on. The plant you need is near her hut and you can buy the booze, probably buy the plant off that herbalist too actually

There's so much depth to the game that I barely know anything really There're so many different possibilities for any one single task.
I'll go herb hunting when I'm next on then. Desperately need some more food, although surviving on alcohol alone seems a fantastic life to live, I doubt it's actually healthy for anyone, even a witcher...

I never seem to run under 90 or so water. It's everywhere.
And swallow potion as others mention just adds to it.
Quen will be a blessing (upgrade it's first skill and you won't struggle with knockback effects).
Just done everything in Novigrad, Velen and White Orchard, and gotten to Skellige Islands, but I feel drained from all the side-quests I've done.
Does anyone know if I enter a point in the main story where I've gone so far that stuff is missable?
If you've just reached Skellige now you're only about 40-50% of the way through. Lucky git. You'll get a notification later on yeah, but it's only a very small amount of sidequests that cannot be done afterwards. The only ones I can remember of note are the Dandelion and Priscilla ones, the one where you help Dandelion renovate his new gaff and the one with Priscilla is called Carnal Sins.
'Gwent, which is free-to-play and will launch on PC, Xbox One, and PS4, is more than just a competitive card game. It’s going to have a full-fledged single-player mode. There will be several campaigns—each 10+ hours, the developers say—with top-down maps and even optional areas to explore. Your main character, who will vary depending on the story, will make decisions ranging from menial to significant, in true Witcher style.'

Just started playing this and am getting into it. Currently level 4. Cleared the first area of question marks, went to see the emperor dude and have done a few bits in the next area - can't recall the names.
I've started one difficulty down from the hardest, as I like a challenge. However, after reading through this thread, it seems that a lot of people did it on the hardest difficulty and many that did it on the same difficulty as I, found things quite easy in the late game.
So I'm now thinking I should start again on the hardest one. Bit of a pain, but I'm not exactly far in and means I won't need to do a full playthrough again for the trophy.

Yeah start again, you'll have learned a lot from your initial experience which should set you up well to restart on death march, difficult as hell at some points, but worth it and I can imagine it being too easy on anything lower.
What is alchemy build BTW? I see no benefit of allocating points to the alchemy abilities. It seems pretty uninteresting compared to my beloved spinning attack.

That's the exact reason I hadn't used an Alchemy build before. But looking through death march builds yesterday there were a feck load of Alchemy+Sword builds. Alchemy is considered the most powerful build tree but it focuses on using potions for bonuses which I thought would get tedious so went with a usual combat build.

alchemy is pretty difficult to get a handle earlier on because you don't have enough ingredients to make it work, but once you actually make most of the available potions it becomes OP if you mix it with some sword skills like whirl.
not to mention 9x northern wind comes incredibly handy in crowd control and rending enemies for massive damage.

basically it freezes opponents for some time. used it to cheese the toad boss at the beginning of HoS that so many people seemed to have trouble with, for example.
there's so many advantages to the alchemy build, that I can't list all of them without spending time explaining each single one. first of all you can easily get over 250 toxicity endgame with some skills from the alchemy tree. raffard's decoction makes you invincible for few seconds in addition to restoring your HP fully, etc. if you want to learn more you can read this at your leisure: https://www.reddit.com/r/witcher/comments/371pjz/complete_guide_to_alchemy/
I was a skeptic at first, too. but once I switched from a signs build I never looked back.
you can reassign points using potion of clearance. it costs 1k though.

To be honest the perk that adds a 25% healing effect to every potion is already enough on it's own to make you pretty much op. You shouldn't really lose any fight with that because you can just instaheal yourself over and over again.
If you want a real build and not one of these pansy bomb ones, go all Feline in your gear, increase your toxicity so you can pop constant swallows, thunderbolts/blizzards and the good decoctions (Ekimara is the best) and whirl your way to victory. Get the ability that allows for adrenaline points to be used as signs for consistent quen.

Drugged, bored and have a bit of pain, so i try to ramble just to keep my mind away from the pains while i wait for the morphine to work.
Can't speak for others, but for me, the first play-through is always about the story and experiencing the world.
Which means no looking up the best build(s) (or if so, use what you feel is more important rather than a template).
I've ended up putting 3 points into the axii so I have that option when i want in dialogues, 3 in quen - because i'm not a fan of knock-backs, zip zero in alchemy (though the posibility of getting higher level mutagens, if that's what it does, does intrigue me), and a focus on fast-attacks, adrenaline management and a few points in strong-attacks for when those are needed.
Fast attack:
Muscle memory: Maxed
Precise blows: Maxed
Whirl: 1
And i'm unsure, but i possibly maxed Igni/melt armor, but i did a respec and im unsure if i kept it as i didn't use it often.
My play-style isn't in any way interesting for now, i just try to experience as much as i can, doing quests everywhere. I have a feeling difficulty level really only increases numbers, which for me isn't a good thing as i'd like minor enemies to die pretty fast and to not get one-shot by every boss that's above me in levels (again, i havent tested higher difficulty levels, so i wouldn't know for sure)
As for the uninteresting play-style, i have tried to implement the use of Aard more when i fight groups of enemies (especially humans), my idea of a group-fight is to kill them fast with quick-attacks and dance between them, or if i can enter the fight using aard to get them knocked down then all the better. As for bosses, I do believe it's a pretty common tactic in putting up quen all the time, roll around when the enemy attacks and strike when i see opportunities. I try to use oil every now and then if i hunt for guarded treasures or know that something I'm hunting is going to take some time without the extra damage, but I feel like entering the menues to find the right oil for the right enemy is too much of a hassle to be fun in normal circumstances.
I used igni for some time, mainly to "explode" the gas i didn't want near me (something i didn't know i could do on my first save), but also to reduce some defense on the enemy, like
The quest with that red-head mage where you fight a wild hunt
, but also to make hags drop their guard and those mist-monsters to be visible for a longer period of time.
I've had a lot of fun doing (almost) everything in Velen, the map is fantastic! (not done everything on the islands in the south and heavier enemies in the south-east, though i did find an elemental there i was able to beat, but I've been to
Fyke island or whatever it was called where they experimented on the plague
.
So I know there is that military camp left in Velen, and probably some quest i have to hear by lurking and a few quests on the streets i've overlooked, but pretty much everything else has been a proper joy to do.
I feel like despite it's brilliance, the sheer amount of quests and discoveries in Velen is a bit too much, as I seem fed up to some degree when i get to SKellige and think to myself it's a whole new Velen i have to go through again. Bolded have to as it has two sides to it, i really like that there is a lot more to do, but it's also overwhelming to the point where i find it hard to get going. When you leave white orchard and get to velen, you've just gotten into the game, and you see the huge possibilities when you look at the world map and see all the question-marks, but now I feel like it'll be more of a hassle to my (not medical, but for the lack of a better word) ocd than fun.
Katrine & I are heading for Amsterdam on our first trip that doesn't include hospital or family visits now in a weeks time, so I think i'll take a break up until then and when i return physically exhausted i can relax in my chair, knowing that I have a lot of monsters to enjoy slaying.

Ended up starting again on Death March. So glad I did. The game is definitely meant to be played at this level, imo. I now have to scout out encounters, instead of just running in swinging.
Currently running fast attack 5, Jedi mind tricks 2, defence 1 and moon & stars with a red mutagen to increase attack.
I just hit level 6 and have just returned to The Bloody Baron with news of his daughter. That Blubberkin stage of the quest was freaky!
Only done the Griffin boss so far but am about to go for a level 7 one. Jenny in the woods, or something...?
Been playing a fair amount of Gwent. Challenging and defeating every merchant I've come across. Managed to beat The Bloody Baron for his unique card. Still not got enough cards to try the other factions yet, but I reckon I should be good enough to go back and beat the guy in the garden at the palace now.
Really enjoying the game so far. It's definitely living up to the hype in this thread, for me. I can see me spending many hours on it and I'll be picking up both expansions.
One thing that's puzzling me. I'm picking up very high level witcher gear diagrams. I'm still using the level 1 Warrior chest piece and the two Viper set swords, which are still just about doing the job. Without giving too much away, am I going to be picking up some level 6-10 stuff in Velen, or should I buy some diagrams? The non-witcher gear looks terrible, imo, so I'd preferably like to stick to witcher gear....unless it's going to seriously gimp me.
Speaking of gimps; I laughed out loud at the conversation between the two guards in The Bloody Baron's cellar.
