Gaming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Wow just got to Skellige. It's incredible. It's like a whole new world. Completely different to Novigrad. What an amazing game
Wait until you reach Toussaint in the last DLC.
----------
I'm tempted to do my third playthrough of the game but I'm not sure yet. Has anyone else done so? Might do this one simply on Just The Story to breeze through all the boring stuff and soak up the good plot and go wandering in Skellige/Novigrad again.

finished B&W yesterday. The main campaign is nowhere near as good as HoS but the fact that the expansion is nearly 40 hours long and has a full game's worth of content in it more than makes up for that, though.

Got the good ending, too. Seemed far easier to get it than in the main game.

The last boss though. Fecking hell. Talk about disproportionately difficult compared to the rest of the game. I played on second highest difficulty and up until that point barely felt challenged by any bosses, but the final boss... must have taken me at least 30 attempts to kill. Nightmare.

Yeah, the balance of focus was definitely shifted to the side of an enchanting landscape and rich side quests rather than an intimate and complex main quest like Hearts of Stone was.

I think they made the good ending so easy because it's the last edition to the game; nobody really wants to end on a sour note.

Ended up starting again on Death March. So glad I did. The game is definitely meant to be played at this level, imo. I now have to scout out encounters, instead of just running in swinging.

Currently running fast attack 5, Jedi mind tricks 2, defence 1 and moon & stars with a red mutagen to increase attack.

I just hit level 6 and have just returned to The Bloody Baron with news of his daughter. That Blubberkin stage of the quest was freaky!

Only done the Griffin boss so far but am about to go for a level 7 one. Jenny in the woods, or something...?

Been playing a fair amount of Gwent. Challenging and defeating every merchant I've come across. Managed to beat The Bloody Baron for his unique card. Still not got enough cards to try the other factions yet, but I reckon I should be good enough to go back and beat the guy in the garden at the palace now.

Really enjoying the game so far. It's definitely living up to the hype in this thread, for me. I can see me spending many hours on it and I'll be picking up both expansions.

One thing that's puzzling me. I'm picking up very high level witcher gear diagrams. I'm still using the level 1 Warrior chest piece and the two Viper set swords, which are still just about doing the job. Without giving too much away, am I going to be picking up some level 6-10 stuff in Velen, or should I buy some diagrams? The non-witcher gear looks terrible, imo, so I'd preferably like to stick to witcher gear....unless it's going to seriously gimp me.

Speaking of gimps; I laughed out loud at the conversation between the two guards in The Bloody Baron's cellar.
My post got lost at the bottom of the last page, it seems. Anyone got any advice on the Witcher gear situation? I'm level 8 now and could really do with finding diagrams for a set that I can use at my current level. A vague location on where to look would be great. North-East Valen, for example. Or am I stuck wearing the ugly non-witcher gear?

I don't think there is any witcher gear at level 8. In the Velen area there are the basic griffin school diagrams which are around l14 to 17 or something like that. There is one piece in the tower that separates velen and novigrad. On the river

First use these locations to buy the witcher gear maps from vendors, blacksmiths etc:

http://www.gosunoob.com/witcher-3/gear-map-locations-for-witcher-armor/

Then take on these scavenger hunt missions on based on your level.

You should if I'm not mistaken be able to show off the Feline set at level 11.

Edit: yeah it was Griffin not Feline

Thanks. I have a few of the treasure hunt missions. The Griffin one is the lowest at level 11, I think. I'll give it a shot soon.

Cheers. Not looked at the link, but I have a few of the missions. I just wasn't sure if there was a set between the level 1-2 stuff I have and the Griffin set.

I found it useful to stock up on all the missions in case I didn't miss a level. So when I reached 20 I made it a point to get me some bear school gear.

Yeah, I've grabbed every one I've come across.

Just finished the first mission with Keira and told her I'd take her up on her invitation to call round some time. I'm guessing it's not for coffee.

Is this a game that's accessible to casual gamers?
Certainly. There's easy difficulties, and guides online to find Witcher gear. I think I used Gosunoob.

For character building, a fast attack plus Quen build is fairly standard. You can also put puts into the mind control one giving you the Jedi mind trick option in a lot dialogue. Hard to screw up a build unless you just randomly spread points everywhere.

I've almost given up on completing the game because of this cnut. I don't know, think it's a bit much and I wasn't prepared for it armour wise, potion wise, nothing wise, came out of nowhere.

Edit: Just beat him on same difficulty, but point still stands, jesus!

That was the only boss I cheesed by lowering the difficulty. Though apparently I was supposed to run perpendicular to him rather than rolling for his second phase...

I did that. Doesn't always work. Got really lucky when I finally beat him cause it worked every time but usually it was a 1 in 2 chance and when it gets you, you're fecked.

I just stayed as far away as possible from him and when he summons the bats, time a roll to avoid them. You must be quite a distance to dodge though. He has a few other attacks but just keep rolling around and when he comes down get in a few hits. The fecking cnut requires a lot of concentration though, I'd hate to have to face it again!

Sorry for the really obvious question how does the DLC work?

As in I'm going back to playing soon and I'm only like half way through the main story. Is the DLC a continuation once you've finished the main story or do the quests run parallel or what?

Been about a year since I played this, never got around to playing the DLC either.

Might start again now that my 1080 is installed and I am running 1440p,

I killed Keira Metz today. Didn't think Geralt would actually kill her. Whoops

You can do HoS around level 32 or so, depending on how hardcore you are. B&W will pop up later...you can finish the game and then start it with the 'narrative' giving you a clear indication of where it is.

So is it clear what missions are DLC related or are they just incorporated into the main story?

I think with the new user interface, the quests are color coded. So you can tell by looking at them in the menu. The first directive is go meet so and so at a bar somewhere.

Ah I see thanks! Just enjoyed it so much so far so want to stretch it out as long as I can till the remastered Skyrim comes out. Fallout 4 just doesn't do it for me.

Just tidying up Novigrad and the greater Velen area before heading to Skellige.

Currently rocking the enhanced griffin gear at l20 but gonna get enchanted Cat before heading over, l23 I believe.

What is this enhanced griffin gear and how do I get it?

Treasure hunt reward, you need to do find 4 or 5 diagrams in treasure spots and then you can get some yokel to craft it for you, providing you have the necessary minerals.

Look in your treasure hunt quests, you've probably picked up a few. If not google it to see where it starts I cannae remember.

The hell!

Awesome News.

I have just started Fallout 4 and I personally like it more than Fallout 3 and New Vegas so far. Really nice.
However, I am more a Fantasy Kind of guy. I just prefer dark Castles, snowcapped mountains and green forests as Setting so Skyrim coming to PS4 is great News.

Just make a Remake of Dark Souls 1 as well and I will be fine for a Long time.

I think I should mention again that I beat the main boss in Blood & Wine on death march on my first attempt. Woop. :p Alchemy build to boot.

Have just started playing this; first dip into the Witcher series. Just starting out after the combat tutorial! Any tips for a beginner? It's very AC like so far and I love it. Probably going to take my sweet time exploring the depth of the game.

Whenever you're walking around and see a yellow herb/flower, pick it up. It's called celandine and useful for making the swallow potion, which helps regen your health.

Don't do what I done and ignore it, then run out of all food and think 'feck!', then spend 2 hours walking around flower picking

 Good to know! I'm still at that area where you just get your horse and kill the ghouls attacking you after the starting cinematic! I did pick up every celandine in sight before logging off just because I do that in every game I play!

Also what is a swallow potion? Didn't know there was crafting in this game

Ah well if you're a collector anywhere then you'll be fine - I just went around everywhere on the horse so I missed out on what should've been loads of herb collecting.

There's a ridiculous amount of crafting - you can assemble and dissemble anything into its components, make new armour, find new designs for stuff, concoct potions, bombs... It's so deep. It might intimidate you at first, just go with it and you'll slowly get around it. There's loads of stuff I still don't touch at all really, but that doesn't ever detract from the game. It's amazing.

I'm a late-comer to the party but currently at lvl 17 on the hardest difficulty and can't put this game down. Here are a few basic tips from my POV.

General tips would be:-
- Play on the hardest or second hardest difficulty. It seems difficult at first, but you'll very quickly become comfortable but still feel the challenge.

- Loot everything. Sounds like you're going to take your time, so explore lots and search buildings as much as you can. Also, don't bother deconstructing stuff early on. Sell it. I found that picking up plants and selling them helps with the slow gold income at the early game stage.

- Try to do side-quests before main quests where possible and try to pick the lowest level stuff. You get much more XP from main quests, which sounds good, but you will very quickly - around level 10 - start to become over-levelled for quests and won't get as good a reward, as well as finding them very easy.

- Don't be afraid to run away from a fight. If you stumble on a bandit camp and there are 4-5 guys that are a few levels higher, back off and come again when you're more badass.

- Most importantly, reduce the auto save interval and manually save as often as is possible.

Combat tips:-
- Block / counter humans and dodge monsters and try to isolate opponents. Dodge a lot. Dodge rather than roll. Only use roll to retreat far enough away to hit a potion or change signs. Play like a counter-punch boxer. Dodge, land a couple of hits and dodge again. Where possible, dodge sideways as your opponent attacks, allowing you to get a attack at their rear, which deals more damage and has a higher chance to crit.

- Get rid of crossbowmen as fast as possible. Rush them or there's an ability which allows you to deflect bolts. It's very useful early on. Not so much as I'm progressing.

- Read the Bestiary and know your oils & signs. Especially for bosses.

- Only use the lock-on function for single opponents.
