Gaming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

I'm a late-comer to the party but currently at lvl 17 on the hardest difficulty and can't put this game down. Here are a few basic tips from my POV.

General tips would be:-
- Play on the hardest or second hardest difficulty. It seems difficult at first, but you'll very quickly become comfortable but still feel the challenge.

- Loot everything. Sounds like you're going to take your time, so explore lots and search buildings as much as you can. Also, don't bother deconstructing stuff early on. Sell it. I found that picking up plants and selling them helps with the slow gold income at the early game stage.

- Try to do side-quests before main quests where possible and try to pick the lowest level stuff. You get much more XP from main quests, which sounds good, but you will very quickly - around level 10 - start to become over-levelled for quests and won't get as good a reward, as well as finding them very easy.

- Don't be afraid to run away from a fight. If you stumble on a bandit camp and there are 4-5 guys that are a few levels higher, back off and come again when you're more badass.

- Most importantly, reduce the auto save interval and manually save as often as is possible.

Combat tips:-
- Block / counter humans and dodge monsters and try to isolate opponents. Dodge a lot. Dodge rather than roll. Only use roll to retreat far enough away to hit a potion or change signs. Play like a counter-punch boxer. Dodge, land a couple of hits and dodge again. Where possible, dodge sideways as your opponent attacks, allowing you to get a attack at their rear, which deals more damage and has a higher chance to crit.

- Get rid of crossbowmen as fast as possible. Rush them or there's an ability which allows you to deflect bolts. It's very useful early on. Not so much as I'm progressing.

- Read the Bestiary and know your oils & signs. Especially for bosses.

- Only use the lock-on function for single opponents.

Cheers for that! So basically I'll fight like I do in AC except I'll have to get used to incorporating Signs!

Interesting tip regarding dodging monsters. Found it really hard countering the very first fight against the three ghouls post tutorial.

No worries.

Oh and your crossbow is the only way to deal with underwater Drowners, though they die with one or two shots.

Just fought my first couple groups on the shore. You weren't kidding about dodging. Found it nigh impossible to get in a counter-slash on them. Casting Axii (?) the stun Sign helped a lot.
Axii is cool. Try Aard for groups of 4+. If you knock a target down and get close before they get up, you can insta-finish them.

I've not come across those yet. They're annoying enough when you can use your sword...

Water Hags are the worst. Oh and werewolves with the whole 'regen all the health ever' thing.

They're nowhere near as annoying in water. They die with one or two shots of default bolts.

Yeah, Water Hags are bad. Devourers are the most annoying though. Like Rotfiends but only explode once they reach zero health.

I've just got the 'Puppet' upgrade for Axii. It's pretty cool having enemies fighting for you. Zap the heavy guy at a bandit camp and watch him one-time his mates.

Are finishers automatic? Didn't really notice the tutorial spending much time on it.

I'm still not sure. I occasionally get a finisher but they seem automatic. There's also mention of a special attack (hold attack button) but can't really see any difference when I've tried it. Maybe I need to enable an ability, or something...?

Hmm thanks! I've just gotten to the first town where the tavern is. Have decided to take up all the side quests before pursuing the main story arc. Are there any benefits to building gwent decks?

No real benefit to the story, really. I love it though. Make sure you buy the cards from the innkeeper there. Slight spoiler, but she won't always be there.

I'd definitely recommend clearing everything in the first area before moving on. It's essentially the tutorial area. You're in for a surprise when you finally move to the next area.

 I'm going to take a while. Pausing to pick every herb and talk to any Tom Dick and Harry peasant just in case they have something of import, looting anything that looks lootable etc.

(Yeneffer is )

So I take it the later stages of the game are much more versatile? I'm wondering too if I should be crafting at this stage. I've got a bunch of blunt axes that I should be dismantling I think.
I found that selling stuff early on worked better for me. Gold is pretty hard to come by until you get to around level 10. I loot everything and haven't had a problem with materials.

So it's safe for me to sell looted weapons?

Question about oils: been fighting ghouls and whatnot without Necrophage oil, are they useful at low levels? Taking about half health every fight; maybe I'm too aggressive and don't bother dodging or rolling since I resort to meditating after every combat round. Managed to beat the noon-wraith on the quest too by fighting her inside the Yrden circle without oils or potions.

I sold everything I could. Looking back and considering how much material I have now - level 17 - it was the right choice, imo.

They are useful. You only get a low amount of charges with them until you're able to upgrade them. I found that I would use them if I was facing a pack of Drowners, so I could get a couple of them down fast. Definitely use them when facing bosses, though.

Yrden is pretty much essential when facing Wraiths.

What difficulty are you playing on?

The second hardest one, the one below death march? Still haven't made it past White Orchard  Been going around exploring the (?) locations and getting marks of power and bandit camps. Managed to get my quick attack to 4/5 and a nice low level Yellow steel sword. Abstaining from crafting anything atm. Just a couple of (?) locations to go before I'll move on with the story. Spent like 4 hours so far just doing stuff.

Also found out the hard way that I can't counterattack against foes with 2h weapons.

Ah, ok. Was wondering, as you mentioned meditating after combat. It's worth putting a point into the Sun & Stars ability in the brown section of the ability tree. Did you get the Swallow potion yet?

I've done very little crafting overall, tbh. You'll shortly get a decent sword set you'll want to craft. They lasted me until only a couple of levels ago and I have just crafted the Griffin witcher set.

Yea I've got the Swallow potion. Helps so much. Oh maybe I've got it wrong for the difficulty level  I just tried to start a new game and saw that I assumed the second from the top was the second hardest and automatically went with it. I'll start looking at the other trees once I've maxed out the quick damage!

Most people agree that it's best to play on either blood & broken bones or death march. I started on B&BB and got to roughly where you are now but then decided to restart on DM, as I was reading that you become quite OP around mid-game.

I could have just upped the difficulty in-game, but am a bit of a trophy whore, so decided to restart.

Oh you do that in-game? Yea I'm a trophy whore myself  Might restart a game then.

Actually, I was a bit further in than you. I had just got to Velen. It was a bit annoying at first but I'm really glad I did it and overall I didn't find it too much of an issue, tbh. I skipped the first part at Kaer Moran and was able to burn through White Orchard in an hour or two, having done it before and being used to the combat mechanics.

Ok I've gotten to the Nilgard garrison after White Orchard. Have the components to craft a Viper Silver Sword and a Viper Steel one. Should I do them or wait for the next story phase?

Always look to upgrade the witcher items in green. Though it's faster if you just choose one school to upgrade your armor and stuff.

If you're looking to min/max, then look into how they suit your build. Like I did Feline becuase my first build was all quick attack and stamina regen. Or you can just do whatever looks coolest, which I also did when I got semi-competent.

I haven't gotten any set diagrams as of yet! Left my progress at the garrison. Will pick it up later today! Guess I'll be crafting those two blades then! Took @Brocky 's advice to sell everything so thankfully I have abit of wiggle room to afford them.
Question regarding potions and oils; how exactly are they recharged?

Meditate.

This. Although, it's worth mentioning that you can't upgrade the Viper set @LeftyBlaster

Meditate.
And this. Your potions, oils and bombs will be replenished when you meditate. As long as you've got some form of strong alcohol in your inventory.

I'm currently at level 19. I'm actually trying to not gain XP, as I have quite a lot of quests that are 4-5 levels below me, so I'm not using anything that gives XP bonuses and I'm trying to get as many lower level side quests out of the way before advancing the story. It's proving pretty difficult and slightly frustrating, though.

I'm agonising over where to spend ability points. Each tree is so tempting. Doing the prep to fight the Griffin.

Just got to Velen and its huge as feck. Started exploring all the unmarked locations to start with. How long have people spent on this game??

Ha! Told you. :D

Ok I am seriously struggling in Velen. Everything's way above my level and I'm not doing any damage to anything. Am I doing something wrong?
Don't pick fights you can't win. Start a main quest at your level, or hit up notice boards to find side quests around your level.

Is there a way to check quest level?

In your inventory screen go along to quests and open up the tabs and it'll show the level near. Colour coded too now I think.

However, see a red skull near it and you're 99% chance to die trying it.

I fell into a quest before by mistake and was stuck fighting a bunch of midgets who all had those skulls above them, luckily I found a glitch I think and managed to stand out the way and pop them all off with spells and my crossbow. I was clean shaven when that battle started, when I'd finished it... I had a full beard.
