Gaming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

I'm a moron. Sold most of my armour and bought the Temerian DLC armour, forgetting that the Nilfgaardian's would be attacking me left, right and centre.

This game is super sophisticated, but it's not that sophisticated. You'll be a fine. :D

It is! I got butchered by a bunch of them as i'm only a little level 5 compared to them at level 16.

What do you mean? Did guards just random attack you, without you doing anything to provoke? I've never heard that happening.
Guards scale, btw. One of the few things in the game which do. They'll always remain 10+ levels above you.

Yes, I get your point, I just didn't think that would actually happen in the game. I guess I should have expected it, this game really is meticulous. I'll have to try that out tomorrow.

I still haven't got the patch. I really need it for storage as I have too much stuff.

I read the patch makes the framerate even worse which is very disappointing. Game has been out for two months now would have thought they would have managed to fix it by now.

I've played about 35 hours and I've nearly finished the family matters and crones of crookbag bog quests. Feels like the game is going to take forever to finish but I'm really enjoying it. The fighting system is probably the best I've seen in a rpg so far (compared to dragon age, witcher 2, sky rim and fallout anyway).

I just wish they could fix the frame rate it's horrible to play at times

Also how is the time played clock so broken. How hard could it be to put in a working one and why won't they fix it?

I get worse performance with the new patch on PC. Stuttering is back which I had previously been able to remove by forcing adaptive v-sync in the Nvidia control panel. And I feel like I get more fps drops generally as well.

Oh my silky smooth 30 fps, where did you go..

Which video card do you have?

It amazes me how they manage to create the lore for games, it's bloody impressive.

So after a long break from the PS4, I finally got back on to finish Dragon Age, then went on to Arkham Knight, now that's over with I've traded that in for this.

Any tips or pointers for a new game?

Bring a change of underwear and a bag of food.

I reckon this is probably up there with the best games I've ever played.

Bit annoyed though because...
I didn't realise the political side story had to be resolved before the main quest. So whilst I was chuffed with the endings I got for Geralt and Ciri the rest of the world was screwed

This is such torture with a controller.

I have a newfound respect for console gamers ever since I started trying to use a controller. How do you endure it?

If you're into side games, get started on Gwent early. Buy cards from innkeepers when you have a chance.

Witcher armor looks boss. Look up guides on how to get it upgraded.

Don't waste money on weapons. You'll find better ones or their diagrams as you progress.

Have fun, and eat your vegetables.

Cheers for that, I'll get looking for some guides.

I had a quick go on Gwent when I started, I'm not usually a big fan of side games, but I got the hang of it quite quick. I'll get buying those cards then.

In addition to what others said, do literally everything you can in the first area before moving on. Invest your character points wisely (no point in putting them all over the place, as you can only actually apply a few at a time). After leaving the first area, do a fair few of the story missions before galivanting off and doing side quests, otherwise you'll get fecked a few times by enemies at a higher level ability.

Also, remember to save your game often.

Cheers AN! Will be making a proper crack on this tonight (well once the new patch has downloaded) and it's always good to have a good steer of how to start a game off.

Is it best to focus on just combat skills or a mixture of combat & signs/alchemy?

I'm not really arsed about Alchemy (I mean, every now and then I'll create some potions/oils and stuff - but I don't go out of my way to find ingrediants or anything) so I haven't invested any points there. At the beginning you might find it useful to have 1 or 2 points in the Axii sign (mainly for conversation trees)... but really, you can't go wrong with whatever Signs you use often (Fire and Magic Trap for me). Other then that there's the Regen/Vitality points in the general area that are decent, and I regret not putting points into combat skills earlier - specifically quick and heavy attacks.

Sounds good, I've never been one for keeping up with "Alchemy" in different games and didn't really fancy doing it this either. Weapons and armour on the otherhand I'm usually keen on crafting. I'll focus on the signs mentioned and combat skills early on then. Cheers again for the tips!

You can 'break' the game with certain alchemy/adrenaline builds, but I wouldn't recommend it on a first play through. By end-game you'll be over-powered as it is.

A typical build would be light attack upgraded to whirlwind, couple points in Delusion to save you from some fights/bribes, and upgraded Quen. From there it's up to taste. I don't recommend Sun and Stars (or whatever the vitality regen one is) if you are playing on one of the two hardest difficulties (which I do recommend). No vitality regen gives the game a proper challenge.

Or you just eat a shit load of bread and raw meat... and supplement it with gallons water.

My Geralt should be a right fat bastard.

The Radovid/political plot was so terribly rushed, you didn't miss too much to be honest. I take it you chose to 'push Djikstra forcefully' when saving Philippa? I did that on my first playthrough, I didn't expect the outcome.
That breaks the political plot, you have to talk it out and philippa comes up with the idea.

Patch is great. Inventory system is much better and having the stash is the one thing i thought the game was missing. Was annoying having to sell or drop certain things because of weight.

@SilentWitness I garbed myself fully in Temerian blue, went over to the Nilfgaard army camp, stood around for minutes and nothing happened. Are you sure you didn't reactively provoke the guards who attacked you? They only tried anything when I pulled out my sword, or casted signs - which is the same irrespective of what armour you wear.

So nearly 50 days since I last played it, the update has downloaded. Time to see if Wolverstone is there.

HE'S THERE. I'M FINALLY GOING TO SKELLIGE.

im-on-a-boat-gif.gif

Didn't steal nor provoke. Must have been a bug.
Early on in the game I cleared one of those abandoned sites and after the cutscene where the citizens/guards arrive, I accidentally fell in the water and a guard attacked me. Unless he disliked the splashing I'm guessing I had a similar bug.

I'm going to be controversial and say don't bother with Gwent.

It's not storyline essential, and is just a cleverly thought out, yet still fairly pointless side-game.

There's a shitload of content already here and you have over 100 hours of stuff to do without crucifying your social life and relationships any further than necessary.

Gwent is fun though and if your a fan of the previous game it's cool when you find a card of old characters. Plus it's a great little break from the main game.

I think I'm about 50-60 hours of playtime now (man I wish it would keep track of time played). Just finished the crookback quest line. I think I need to go to Novigrad now but I can't be bothered crossing the Pontar valley as there's still lots to do in the area I've been playing around in (the towns around the barons castle). Think this is the best game I've ever played.

Once you get to level 9/10 the game really goes to another level as you can start to really explore.

Have they said when the DLC is coming out? Never bought DLC before but I think I might get the expansion pass for this considering how good the game is and how it's meant to be 30 hours long. Will probably last me a lot longer considering how slow I've been at doing the quests so far.

Performance seems to be a bit better with this patch for me. I turned off the motion blur in the 'post processing' settings and I think it's running better during the rain now. Crookback bog is still bad though which is a shame as its been my favourite area. I just walk around and don't use the horse to make it better
