Television The Walking Dead

well by your own admission there you skipped a good chunk of it so what do you know?! not being rude but your not really in a position to rate something you don't watch properly!

Well you are being rude. You're assuming that you have to watch the entire show before you are allowed to give criticism. That my friend is rubbish. I came back to TWD because they sacked the original writing staff. So I gave the new writing team a go, skipping the second half of season 2. I watched the last 2 episodes of season 2, the barn full of zombies...... and have since followed the show. I got very close to giving up on it again after that terrible writing with the Governor magically escaping the warehouse full of zombies.

The characters in the show are awful and the writing has been dreadful. The only reason this show is popular is because we all love Zombies. I like to think of it as one of those terrible 1 star films that takes itself so seriously and yet is so dreadful that it actually makes it really funny to watch. The surprising thing with TWD is that midway through Season 4 it became a better show, focussing less on storybook villains and more on character development. Also helped by the fact that the writing staff remembered that Zombies are actually dangerous.

Gotta agree, I watch it in spite of some clearly weak parts. It doesn't mean I dont wish they did things differently but hey I still cared enough to watch till the end so I can't dislike everything.

Unlike Redsky I did actually stop watching during the Governor section and came back to it a few months ago as some tv while I workout or do other stuff. That said most of the other shows out right now are worse.

It's also amazing how many people in this thread complain about the show yet keep watching it.

Not that amazing, they started watching it because it was very good initially. Now it's turned to shit, and many people complain about that but at the same time hope it'll improve again. This weird idea that people only watch it to complain is a pretty lazy opinion.

Anyway, I don't see how any of this is relevant to what I said.

Right common complaint I've seen on this thread is character development! How on earth can people say there has been no / poor character development?? A number of the characters have completely changed from the people we we're originally introduced to! Are you blind or something?

I'll give a few examples:
Glen: He started out as a shy and easy going guy who was used as an errand boy, basically bullied into all the crap jobs that no one else wanted. Since then he has fallen in love with Maggie and feels he has something to live for and refuses to take the stupid risks now, unless..it involves maggie! Hardly the same guy we we're introduced to is it?

Daryl:
Similar to Glen in some respects, he was quiet and shy enough at the start. Only showed anger in the earlier scenes. Allowed himself to be manipulated by his older brother, Merle. He had no friends and basically didn't trust anyone but Merle. The more time that he spent in the camp he realised the error of his ways and saw what his brother was doing and has forged bonds within the group, very strongly with Carol and Rick, Rick now seems to be like a brother to him. How is this not character development?

Hershel:
A quiet and deeply philosophical man who had strong religious beliefs, refused to accept the insanity that surrounded him and his daughters, he felt shielding them from the outside world was best for their futures. He refused to believe an epidemic has destroyed the world and in time he has since come to accept that things are as bad as everyone had tried to tell him in the first place. While he held on to his religious beliefs, he became a leader and done whatever was necessary to protect his family.

Carol:
Probably the character with the biggest change in her character. She started out as an abused wife, who was too afraid to speak up. Now she is independent (literally in the last season), fights for herself and showing she can survive. From one extreme to the other!!

Thats just few examples of how characters have changed, I could easily do this for each main character within TWD!! People have to remember TWD is not just a zombie killer show, its about human struggle, its about survival, its about the heartbreak and hysteria you would probably feel if this was actually what you faced.... I'll give an example: I've seen people pi$$ and moan about some stories dragging out for too long... one was looking for Sophia early on in TWD... While it did drag out for a number of episodes, it felt like they might find her at some stage....they dragged it out to develop Carols Character, to show her breakdown, then that moment they opened the barn........bam!!! That scene when she walked out was amazing!! If they wrapped that up in say one or two episodes then you would not be invested in it at all!

For anyone who has lost a loved one, you should know that we all react differently to it. The emotions / reactions of the characters in TWD have varied a bit, mostly I think they have gone with showing no emotion when a characters loved one has died... For example we haven't seen Maggie show genuine emotion at the loss of her father Hershel being murdered yet, she is focusing on Glen, whom she has fallen in love with (ok she hasn't mentioned her sister as yet I know, bear with me) maybe the idea is that because she lost her father whom she loved, she feels she must find Glen before losing him also.

The key thing about TWD and people have to remember is the show is about Survival, zombies are secondary! Practically every episode to date pushes the survival struggles to the limit, be it scenes of rummaging in empty store houses, low ammo, food or having to kill a loved one to survive. Its all about human survival!!

I haven't read too many people complain about a lack of character development in the main characters. Outside of the main characters, sure, and they'd be right (those characters are either cannon fodder or more recently very cliché). The most common complaint about main characters is that most of them have become dislikable or boring (that's not necessarily my opinion and you're free to disagree of course), making it very hard to get invested in their slow moving story lines.

The idea of creating deeply personal stories about those characters in the context of a zombie apocalypse, instead of focussing on the zombie apocalypse itself, is great. That's what got people invested in the first place. However, you need to keep your viewers really invested in those characters if you want to do that over several seasons. Beyond the first few seasons they've not really succeeded in that, in my opinion. Or rather, only for a select few characters. And that's what causes the complaints about the pace of the series. Of course, you have to divide them by the significant Caf exaggeration factor, but the complaints aren't exactly unjustified.

And I would say the show does move too slow on occasion. Exploring a certain aspect of a character is fine, but dedicating a full episode to it without spending any time on other characters is just too much. Those episodes of last season focussing on just a single group have been guilty of that. It often felt like the dialogue was going in circles for much of the episode until a breakthrough was achieved during the conclusion. A less is more approach, allowing for multiple story lines to advance in stead of just the single one, would've been better.

That was the worst part of the entire show though so it's quite damning if he skipped it and still doesn't like the show.

I gave up on it months ago anyway. Started good but has got worse and worse as it's gone on. Even that little wanker dying wouldn't make me get me to watch it again.

I skipped about 4 episodes and watched the finale. Didn't seem to have missed a thing.

And the worst part about this show, by far, is the writing. They just don't seem to know where they are going, and the emotional stuff is so basically written they might as well skip it and just let us see zombie fights every episode. Also the way they destroy any decent characters is very poor, Glen is unwatchable now, Daryl twists and turns and is such a pussy now it's not even remotely interesting and feck knows why that kid is still in it.

Basically as a brainless zombie show this was decent. Now they've tried to add depth (and stretch budgets), it's not even good for that anymore. Sadly :(

I've been catching up on a lot of shows in the last couple of years. Plenty of quality there as well - The Wire, Breaking Bad, Oz, West Wing, Sopranos, etc. The Walking Dead was always on my list and I figured it will be great because it appeared to be popular and it was a cable show, we know they've done a lot of good TV in recent years and AMC did Breaking Bad.

So, In the last few weeks I've watched the four seasons of it and while I'm not as critical as others here, it's certainly underwhelming. I realize they've had budget cuts and also had to spread whatever money they have over more episodes after the short season 1. I heard it was supposed to have picked back up during season 3, but I just don't see it.

I was nearly bored to death with some of the later episodes in season four - the Daryl and Beth show, come on! - and likable characters like Glenn and Maggie became absolutely daft by wanting nothing else but to find each other. So, Glenn, we're going to save the world. Want to help? No, I must find Maggie! So Glenn, there's a tunnel here full of walkers, let's take another route and spend another day on the road rather than face certain death. No, Maggie must have gone through here! Give me a break. And at a certain stage it's just no longer interesting to see them stick a knife in the head of a walker for the million time. OK, we get it. Maybe it's just not a show that's supposed to run for years and years.

I'll continue watching it. Whether it's because I don't tend to abandon shows in the middle or because it's still worthwhile, I don't know. At least it's gone a positive - 42-43 minute episodes. If those were 60 minutes episodes like some of those other series, it might have been the end of it for me.

Comic-Con Trailer for the new season, like any trailer it contains few hints and spoilers, so watch on your own risk.

I bet you that entire trailer is made up of episode 1, episode 8 and episode 16. That's the trend with this show. It always has good opening, then dire shit until the mid-season finale and back to filler episodes until the season finale. I don't know why they don't just compress it into half of the number of episodes and make them REALLY good instead of constant fillers. Season 1 was the best season and was much shorter than the rest. I guess viewership is the reason...

Oh man, I just finished season 4. Can't wait until the next one! Rick has become such a legend "The're fecking with the wrong people"

So I take it series two is more like series three with plenty of action rather than series two when it lost its way and became a soap opera? Series four isn't available on Sky's boxset download thing til October 1:(

Just started watching this quite recently. Just finished season 3 and will soon get started on the 4th. I won't stay in here too long for fear of spoilers. How many seasons of this have there been? Just wanna know how long until I catch up.

4 seasons are out, I think the 5th starts next month some time. Enjoy!

I think if each season (well cept the first) was ten episodes, this show would benefit for pacing. The trailer however for season5 looks promising and looks to be more action.

Season 4 was really poor. I'm not sure I can face more of the same.

Someone let me know if/when Karrrrrrrrrrrl chokes to death when someone stuffs that hat down his throat. I will watch that episode, I think, but the series on the whole is decomposing faster than the zombies.

Yep. I'll left the show on the half of the last season, cause it became unwatchable for me. However, I would like to see Karrrrrrl getting eaten by a zombie or two. If that happens, please someone tell me cause I would like to watch that episode.

Why do people always overreact in this place? I mean, is it really unwatchable?

It's either amazing (Best tv show in the world. Ever.) or it's unwatchable.

Yes, it might not be as superb as you'd hope it were, but for it to be unwatchable, it would have to be so bad that you couldn't help but turn away from it.

Can we not just say, "It didn't meet my expectations", or "I didn't like it that much"?

It's the Caf, don't expect anything different. A good chunk of shows get shat on yet incredibly the same people doing it continue to watch just to come on here and tell us all how shit the show is. The good old classic excuse nowadays is "I've invested so much time into it!"

There's plenty of middle of the road opinion in this thread if you bother to read it (I wouldn't).

And this is a forum, people are allowed to talk about whatever they like, so if someone wants to come in and talk about the show being poor, then that's fine.

I myself skipped four of the last five episodes last season, and caught the finale. I missed absolutely nothing. Sadly I think that sums up the show, as said above it should be a 10 parter every season. I'll probably watch the start of the new season, but I really struggle to care now.

TWD gets stick because it's a show that tries to be great but ultimately fails. If it was just a fun, mindless zombie show then I'm sure people would accept it for what it is, but it tries to be so much more than that, and ultimately, cocks up pretty badly for the most part.

The episodes where they do focus on the zombie killing, action and gore are generally really good, it's the other 12 episodes every season with shit dialogue, crap characters and stupid plots that are rubbish.

This scene is soooo much better uncensored

*season 4 finale*

Also, I hope for the love of God they cut out the "walk slowly backwards and trip whilst being pursued by a zombie" trope, I can't help but roll my eyes when it CONSTANTLY happens. "Oh no, I've tripped over yet AGAIN!"
