The US Open Tennis Thread

Those who are so cocksure about Djokovic winning or doing great against federer: don't get your hopes up. He did beat him in a very very close-fought match a few weeks ago, but that doesn't guarantuee anything. Tennis doesn't work like that.

Beating the very best of players in a grandslam is a million times harder.. That's where the biggest players shine in tennis and I wouldn't be surprised if Federer wins it in an anti-climactic (is that even a word?) 3. The scenario is all too familiar, Sampras was the same.

if they both play at the same level in the final as they did in the semis, Novak is no doubt the favourite

That's a pointless statement though. Federer would have raised his level when in trouble. Davydenko just wasn't able to make Federer get out of second gear. Federer to win, quite comfortably tomorrow.

And I don't even like Federer...

neither do I, but trust me, when both at the highest level, Djokovic is close to Federer

Kuznetsova just blew a big service game in the second. Up 40-0, finally lost the game after about 10 deuces.

My money's on Federer. Djokovic really is excellent mind but i can't see Federer losing.

I'm not saying Djokovic will win (although I hope so), I'm saying that with his play and progress, it's just a matter of time when he'll start beating both Federer and Nadal more often (and I'll be brave and crazy enough to say regularly). At the US Open he's the only real threat to Federer (Nadal carrying an injury and Roddik and Davydenko having a complex :D). I think that in the next year these three will fight real battles and Novak will get closer to Nadal. Federer is not untouchable, Canas has shown it this year as well. I agree he's the favourite, but don't understand why people can't believe he could lose tomorrow

People are quite willing to believe that he could lose tomorrow, they just think that the odds are very much stacked in his favour. You (no doubt due to your nationality) seem to think that Djokovic is in with a really good chance.

He's not.

Nadal is a better tennis player than Djokovic currently and Federer beat him in Wimbledon. And that was very similar. Nadal played great tennis to the final, and Federer cruised through easy ties where he didn't play that well. Come the final, though, and he upped his game bigtime.

What was Federer like and what did he win at the age of twenty?
(Djokovic turned 20 in May)

You were commenting on how they match up now, not how Djokovic compares with a 20 year old Federer.

The Count gave a good summary in the post above.

Good win for Henin.

As for the mens final Federer is clearly the favorite but i predict a Djokovic win. I have been wrong about Roddick and Davydenko in the earlier rounds though. They like in the two games I mentioned is the first set. Roddick played brilliantly in the first only to feck up when it mattered in the tie-break. If Djokovic can keep his cool I think he can do it. He has the serve and the ground strokes to challenge Federer and it comes down to being mentally prepared because Federer doesn't give opponents many chances.

Nadal is clearly not a better tennis player than Djokovic on the hard courts. And if you read post 276 you'll get a good example of why people think he can beat Federer tonight. Djokovic isn't the type of player that loses all of these big points against players like Nadal and Federer.

Federer will win.

I hope this helps.

Wow, what a brave bet. And just because you say "I hope this helps", it doesn't make you some kind of a genius and the rest of us as some kind of idiots.

No offence.

of course :D

I don't say he has a good chance, I just say he has a chance, better chance than anybody else at the moment. And Nadal is a better tennis player than Djokovic only on the clay (he's of course the best there), on a hard surface he isn't better at the moment

Federer is obviously the favorite. And Novak is the toughest opponent he could have faced in the final. Some people backing the latter doesn't mean they are saying he is the favorite to win the open now.

Federer's girlfriend is pretty ugly, which is suprising. I guess he ain't much of a looker, either.

And I bet he's totally silent during sex apart from sometimes yelling out, "C'mon!"

was thinking the same thing. he can surely get better than that! i suppose he really loves her

I think she looks like an ugly version of Abi titmass.

Djokovic breaks Federer to make it 6-5 in the first set. He's now serving for the set

I hope he takes the first set. That'll make it a fascinating final because, with all respect to Novak, I can't see him winning in straight sets.

Cracking last couple of games, and this tiebreak is tight. Hope Djokovic takes the first for the matches sake, he's getting a little pissed with himself mind, wasted energy

1st set to Fed-Ex. Great game so far, but Djokovic should have coverted one of the five set points.

Still though, Djokovic has more than held his own, just needs to make that step up to win the crucial points. Nadal has a rival for that second place spot.

Crikey that was brilliant. Harsh on Djokovic but he more than enough chances to to win the set.
