The US Open Tennis Thread

Yes this is true. But has he ever been in a Grand Slam Final before? No... there`s going to be nerves.

And even more important: Beating Federer in Montreal is something entirely different from beating him in a Grand Slam. Federer is best when he needs to be best. I think he`ll wipe the floor with Djokovic to be honest. And that`s not being disrespectful to Novak, but Federer is still a class above.

agree with everything, but Djokovic also plays best when he needs. he has a great tie-break record. he's unbelievably psychologically stable and confident considering his age (he's only 20). he's better than Federer when he was 20. and Federer will develop a bit of a complex from Novak in the next couple of years, you'll see. Federer said after the match in Montreal that it was an unimportant match and things like that. after that, Novak's father said 'Federer is a "small" person'. also, they played a year or so ago in the Davis Cup. Federer won (of course), but he said after the match that he didn't believe Nole's injuries, and that Nole had requested medical help during the match only to break Fed's concentration. I tell you, Federer knows Nole is the player that can stop him.
and, as I have said before, I like (love) Djokovic because he's a great person, showman, and one of very few players that acknowledges great moves and applauds his opponents, having fun on the court. and of course, the most important, he's from Serbia :D

p.s. I bet you didn't know that Djokovic and Ana Ivanovic used to train in an empty swimming pool for a while when they were kids. our country and government do nothing for young, talented players

I really need to take up tennis. It's a sport I might be quite good at, even though I suck at all the others. Problem is, it's quite expensive.

Depends, there are courts you can play on for free at parks, or perhaps a small charge. Think it's too late for us, but whenever you're in Manc I'll give you a game! I'm pretty athletic, can get around the court, but I just don't have a serve, despite being 6 foot 2. I'm a delicate spinster rather than a power player

Woot! My Union offers tennis membership for £12. I fookin' love being a student. Thing is, my house is now much farther from the gym and sports grounds than Halls were last year. =/

The more I watch Djokovic play the more I'm starting to hate him again. The incessant bouncing of the ball and his totally insulting arrogance.

I'd like to see him look so full of himself when the world number one shows him his place.

I like him as a player, and I've liked him from interviews I've seen. I also don't mind someone mixing up the way they serve a bit to gain advantage. But the lads bouncing it 15, 16 times before each serve! The bigger the point, the more he seems to bounce it. Pure gamesmanship, there is no valid reason for doing that. I don't see why he does it, has a good enough game as it is, all this does is court him controversy and get potential supporters on his back

Bah. Ah well.

I've got to say, though, I've been really disappointed with the Men's Quarter-Finals this Open. Every single one has been a straight setter :(

Let's hope the Semis are slightly better.

Federer/Roddick was fantastic for the first 2 sets, much better than the other 3 matches. I almost felt sorry for Roddick; almost, but not quite. Can see a Roger/Djokovic final with Roger to win in 4. Don't think Djokovic is quite ready to beat him over 5 sets plus he has had a much more tiring tournament so far. Come on Roger!

So now is it time to give our picks for the semi's? I got Peer wrong in the quarters, so this time I'm going with Chakvetadze to win, not lose. Also Henin, Federer and Djokovic. I'm fairly confident about the men choices, not so much about the women.

Lots of players take ages before serving. Don't think we can read too much into that. Djokovic doesn't seem that arrogant. On the other hand, Serena Williams really lacks class.

Serena Williams acts like she's 15. I honestly think Djokovic takes time before serving to calm himself down and gather his thoughts rather than to annoy the opponent. Safin could learn a thing or two from this kid.

I knew that Ana did, but didn`t know it about Djokovic.

Results of the quarter-final picks:

I`ve decided to drop the Henin- Serena Williams match since some got their picks in after that match was played. The highest obtainable score will then be 7.

Complaints can be sent in a PM to Spoony and/or noodle.

cnuting picks...

sidsutton is the quarter-final winner, he managed to get all correct. Congratulations! A special mention also goes to mehro, who forgot to update his last two picks, had he done that he might very well have gotten 7 as well!

I continued my Aussie Open form and took the honourable 8th place.

I'm going with the popular votes except the Russian women semi. Both fairly evenly matched.

Henin, Chakvetadze, Federer, Djokovic

Williams, Chakvetadze, Federer, Djokovic.

Could be losing my lead with the women`s picks...

I hope for a Federer-Ferrer final. Dont like that Djokovic and Federer is Swiss, too

Williams Kuznetsova Federer Djokovic
