The US Open Tennis Thread

I think sometimes you make your own luck. Federer has the vision to try big shots at big moments and has the skill to pull them off. He has now won 12 slams in just over 4 years while it took Sampras about 12 years to win his 14. I'm sure, barring devastating injury, Fed will pass that. I think he is realistic enough to know that he won't be winning 3 a year much longer. I hope he gets the French; he is the 2nd best clay court player after all. Don't understand why anyone doesn't like him. He is charming, funny, a great sportsman and a fantastic player. What's not to like?

he played Djokovic in the Davis Cup last year. Djokovic asked for medical time out and Federer said after the match (btw, he won it of course) that Djokovic was faking injury or something to take Federer out of his rhythm

What is probably true, probably not. Or he was just imitating Nadal again.

No offence, I like Djokovic. Game needs showmen like him.

I think the year ending final is quite a big deal actually. Anyway I still think a player makes his luck.
The big question is will Roger win the French which will cement his greatness? Will be tough with Nadal in the way but if anyone can do it, Fed will. Sampras never even got to a final did he? I also think Fed won't be winning 3 grand slams a year much longer as he is bound to start to slow down in the next year or two.

Semifinal was his best. His serve volley game didn't quite work out on clay.

the fact is that Federer is psychologically the most stable tennis player (probably ever). He won 12 Grand Slams out of 14 finals. But the fact is also that Djokovic is right behind him with his mental strength. After losing the first set with those 5 set points missed, very very few players would be able to leave it behind totally and focus on the second set, which is what Novak did. And he's only 20. And finally, the fact is that I hate Federer. OK, not hate, but dislike. He's so serious and boring during the matches, and after them. Plus, last year I put some money on Roddick, and this year on Novak. I bet I'll gues the finalist (beside Federer) next year

I understand that you guys love Djokovic, I like him too, but I just don`t understand how people hate Federer.

No one plays more technically beautiful tennis than him, it would be like hating Ronaldinho. I admit he doesn`t show a lot of emotion during matches, but that`s because he is focused, you can see how he quickly forgets points he has lost and also moves on from points he has won. He also shows alot of feelings after matches and is a nice and charming person. The tennis sport would so much poorer without Roger Federer.

You can show emotions and be focused. I just don't like him because he makes ATP race boring at the top. And I don't like his celebration(s). He's a great person and almost a perfect tennis player, but there are people you just don't like. Federer is one of them. And there are people you just want to punch in the face. His girlfriend is one of them

I'm sure she thinks highly of you, too... actually, she's probably content with being 2.4 million dollars richer.

I mean, I know you're Serbian and all, but sheesh. Talk about national bias. I was conflicted about whether I liked Djokovic or not, but if his supporters are as horrifically biased as you then I think I'll swing to dislike again.

Djokovic is not as good a tennis player as Federer. He never will be. I suspect sooner or later he'll start to beat Federer regularly as Federer slows down and Djokovic matures, but he'll never be as good if you compared them in their prime.

It's like Formula One. Alonso is rampant now, and he actually beat Schumacher in the last few years as Schumacher reached the end of his career. But that doesn't mean Alonso is a better driver. Much as I dislike him, Schumacher is the greatest driver ever and I will admit that.

And I dislike Schumacher because he cheats. You dislike Federer, because... he wins?

And how is suggesting that Djokovic was faking injury any worse than bouncing the ball, what, twenty times before you serve it? Some bullshit excuse about keeping his breathing calm doesn't hold with me, I'm afraid. If, before every serve, I had to calm myself down by getting my cock out and slapping my opponent around the face with it, people would think I was a freak. It's an annoying habit, and I think he should find a way to calm himself that doesn't reek of gamesmanship.

I'm off to bed now, I'll reply tomorrow. Cheers

It appears that Henin is re-establisihing herself as the dominant force on the distaff side. None of the others look convincing.

To dislike players in tennis is pretty difficult. I don't care about most tennis players just enjoy watching them play. It's not like football where you have rivalries that allow you to hate players. The only players I dislike are the Williams sisters and Hewitt.

I really don't get why people dislike Federer so much. I don't know him personally but he comes across as a nice enough guy and most of the other players on the tour only say good things about him. Considering he's so good, it'd be easy for him to come across like arrogant but he rarely does. Yes, he doesn't show much emotion but neither did Sampras, Borg and countless others. Do you expect him to do a back flip everytime he wins a match?

And Djokovic comes across as a genuinely nice guy. One of the only players on the tour who applauds the other players shot. I don't think him bouncing the ball has anything to do with gamesmanship.

She had a rough spell with injuries and personal matter off the court. Glad she's gotten through all that.

Again, agreed 100%.

Completely agree with everything you said. That bias is incredible, and anyone who does not appreciate Federer is a twat. I doubt there are many modest, down to earth sportsmen around as him.

This is what you call "being focused" and having your body under absolut control, which is a big quality and not many can do that. He shows enough emotions when the game is over. That's not boring, nor anything else, just highly professional.
And if you say he's boring during a game, FFS, he's by far the best tennis player, his hits are incredible and he plays unbelievable tennis at times.

It's one thing to get close to Federer in a game, but a complete different one to be actually better than him. As talented as Djokovic and Nadal are, I doubt they will ever be better than him.

He's by far the best and most dominating tennis player, yet he's very down to earth and modest, not arrogant at all and never loses a bad word about his opponent. I remember the interview before he played Djokovic, he only said positve things about him.

BTW, ILBB and 2red4you are from Serbia, if I'm right. That explains why they show such bias.

I've not read this thread since the final, so forgive me if this has been raised already. But given the defence of Djovokic's ball bouncing, on the grounds that it's something he needs to do, it helps him relax, get over the tension... basically it isn't used as a gamesmanship tactic, why then did he suddenly only bounce it 5 or 6 times before each serve in the final, instead of the 15 odd he was doing in the rounds before? Surely this should have been the peak time to seek this supposed clarity bouncing the ball an inane amount of times can give you (I can't believe people have actually put forward that arguement, it's utter bullshit!). Now I like the lad, seems a nice guy off the court, and I even like his tennis. But he disgraces himself with the ball bouncing, and hopefully the US Open final will be the start of something, with him scrapping the pissing around completely

ILBB is not from Serbia, but close enough.

FFS, I just don't like Federer, what's the big deal? I like his play, but I don't like him. Maybe I show a bit of bias (that's normal, right?), but I never said Novak is better than Federer. I was just pissed because (almost) nobody gave him any chance. I just thought he's capable of beating Federer, I never said Federer wasn't the (big) favourite. It turned out I was wrong and it just wasn't the time yet. I respect Federer and I've said several times he's the best tennis player (ever), I just don't like him. And that doesn't make me a twat. I overreacted when I said I hated him (if I said it at all, I can't be arsed to go through my posts), I was half serious, I said I put some money on Roddick last year and on Novak this year (I was biased, but believed he could do it. And I like to bet on surprises). And I'll start disliking Federer even more because of you, guys :D

As for the bouncing the ball, that's the way he concentrates. He usually does it before important points. What does Nafal do before every point? He spends more time preparing for every point, often more than allowed 20(?) seconds. And Venus throwing the ball (into the air when serving) and not hitting it? Does not that reek of gamesmanship? Do you think she does it on purpose? Watch Novak's serves after long bouncing, he often serves a winner (or it's a very good serve). I must admit I would be annoyed if somebody else did it, but that's a part of his game. And yes, he only sometimes did it during the final, and he didn't serve that well. Maybe he'll stop doing it, maybe he won't, but that doesn't make him less of a player or person. I'm more annoyed with (usually female) players screaming their lungs out during the match. Players sometimes by the sound of the racket hitting the ball know what kind of shot they deal with. It can be much more distracting than small rituals before points

"He's so serious and boring..."

My fecking god. You make me laugh. That'll be saying you hate Rio.

the time has come...

And will pass again. This isn't a sign Djokovic has overtaken Federer, just that he beat him once. Nadal has beaten Federer loads of times, but he's still a worse player. Mark my words Federer will continue to dominate.

Rio has passion and shows emotions

So does Federer. Don't you see him getting angry on court, or crying when he wins? He's full of emotions, he's just very good at not letting them cloud his judgement when he's actually playing tennis.

actually, I just like players that acknowledge opponents' good shots, and smile here and there during the match. as for the overtaking, I'll dig this out in a year or so

There are probably a handful players on the tour who acknowledge opponents shots.
