Music The Ultimate Metal thread.

I was at the penultimate Black Sabbath show. I was a fair way from stage, but it sounded great. Tony Iommi is so good. Really felt like I was in the presence of legends. Actual chills during War Pigs.
Tony Iommi is a god. I like to think he will never die. Even when he'll be gone physically, he'll live on through the music. That sounds a bit cheesy, but there's an element of truth to it. Even in 100 years time when people are still creating new metal genres, you'll be able to trace everything back directly to him and that haunting opening riff on Black Sabbath. The greatest moment in metal history. I love the man.

My favourite metal song by my favourite Black Metal band Dimmu Borgir, as good as it gets:

Edit:

Stumbled upon this song again which is a song all of us metal heads can relate to, the classic "Burn in hell" by Twisted Sister, here covered by Dimmu Borgir who takes it up a few notches:

Scott Ian said something similar, about all metal riffs basically being made by Iommi already, and everything is just a variation on what he's already done.

In other news, just booked a ticket to Riverside in Leamington Spa.

So the Cavalera brothers are coming to Eistnaflug this summer (Icelandic metal/rock festival) with their Roots thing. So are The Dillinger Escape Plan on their final tour. Now I haven't listened to DEP but I have listened to Killer Be Killed and I like Greg Pusciato. Looks like he's great live. Anyone seen him/them?

Other notable bands: Anaal Nathrakh, Neurosis, Bloodbath and everything the Icelandic scene has to offer.

I considered going to this festival a couple of years back, mainly because I'm a massive Solstafir fan. Looks like a great setting. But it was just too difficult to get there. It's either a ferry from some place like Denmark, which is very expensive, or taking a plane to Reykjavik and then another plane to Egilsstaðir or something like a 10 hour drive from Reykjavik. I'm sure it must be a fantastic trip but we couldn't really afford it then.

Looks like a great line-up, especially Voices, Neurosis and Solstafir. I'd probably go every year if I lived in Iceland.

I love a bit of Dillinger, I've seen them several times and it's always a great show in both sound and sight. Greg is a top frontman and also look out for their guitarist Ben Weinman going for a climb while busting out a solo.

Last Friday i went to the Rhapsody reunion and farewell :(

Got the chance to meet the guys after the concert, talk some stuff and take some pics. Luca is such a nice guy.

The first time i went to see them live was in 2001, but this one was the best concert. The guys are on their musical prime and the set-list was glorious.

Looking forward to their future projects.

Also, last night i went to Slayer!! they were fecking awesome too. Really really great concert. 90 minutes straight of pure moshing. Brutal as usual...

Trash concerts are easily the concerts i enjoy the most. The ultimate catharsis.

Ahhhh that's awesome! I literally just read today how much of a nice guy Luca is so its awesome to hear it again from a cafite!

Slayer looked mad! I'm off to Iron Maiden tomorrow night, hopefully it'll be as good (i'm sure it will be :D)

yeah Luca is really cool dude. I was telling him to do some research on the Arauco wars for future inspiration hahah, specifically i talked to him about the Mestizo Alejo story. He was quite interested in the topic.

Iron Maiden always bring it, so don't worry, it will be fecking awesome for sure.

I assumed the resurgence of this thread was a reaction to the Eurovision love-in.

Ukraine actually had a rock song enter! More alt-rock/nu-metal, but beggars can't be choosers.

Also, Finland sent Terasbetoni a year or two after Lordi. They did not do well.
Ukraine song was crap. Not a patch on Lordi!

Two days until I'll go to see Emperor celebrate the 20th anniversary of the incredible Anthems to the Welkin at Dust. Two days until this live:

I've seen them twice before and last time was pretty poor, but I can't help being extremely excited to see Trym work his magic live again. This is going to be legendary.

I saw System of a Down on Saturday and they're back at their 2000-ish level. They were incredible. And they're coming out with a new album as well apparently.

Also saw Gojira at Graspop a few weeks back. They're one of my favorite bands of the moment. Incredible liveband.

Max and Igor have been touring with a band and playing Roots.. Saw them on Eistnaflug festival and they looked and sounded great.. Max is a bit well fuller but it was fantastic..

Got tickets to see the Melvins in October. Bucket-list band for me, so hugely excited. Most innovative metal band ever, except Sabbath, IMO.

It sold out in minutes, because some gret big eejit is putting it on in a 250 capacity venue. The fecking Melvins! It'll be awesome seeing them in such an intimate venue, though I'm expecting it to get bumped up to a bigger place. People are pretty pissed it's in such a venue and tickets were all gone. It's the only southern date that isn't London.

I saw Sunn O))) the other night too. Loudest thing I've ever heard. Whole body was rumbling. I was genuinely concerned it was going to make me shit myself

They were handing out earplugs on the door, and they seemingly weren't optional.

"Earplugs?"
"No thank you"
"Erm, no... Earplugs." *literally puts the packet of earplugs in your hand*.

I brought my own, but the lass didn't believe me. I had to get them out of my bag to show her.

I'm seeing them in October as well, don't know them that well but they somewhat influenced one of my personal god-tier bands Neurosis, so I'm excited anyway.

I once saw Sunn O))) during a three day festival, not a good idea. It was in a big tent which is a lousy setting for such a band and when you're already exhausted from the festival living their glacial pace isn't exactly what you need. Half of the people there where simply lying on the floor as if asleep. Plenty of noise though.

Saw them at Graspop, as well as the 'new' Sepultura the day before. Pains me to say, but I thought the new Sepultura were better (definately more energy) than Max & Igor :(

Probably old news for many of you, like King_Eric above(!), but Gojira rocks.

Last album, Magma, my favourite.

Magma is incredible indeed. They have this amazing kind of gutteral sound with the double-bass drum work. And technically perfect, great melodics, etc

And all in all very diverse.

I'm seeing these guys in three weeks. Looking forward to it. I always liked Trivium and Amon Amarth live. And Paradise Lost is one of my favorite bands of all time.

Trivium are good live. Saw them at Graspop in 2014, without really meaning to (I was there watching someone else and couldn't be bothered moving), and they put on a really good show.

Guys if you haven't listened to Nargaroth's Jahreitszen album you totally got to :)

It's so beautiful and crazy..check it out. Also Drudkh (any of their albums) is fantastic - atmospheric, moody and they have a distinct mellow sound that somehow takes me back in time.

I've got tons of black metal suggestions if you need some.

Very good stuff, loved the dichotomy between the clean and distorted guitars. Not a huge black metal fan, but I enjoyed this.

Am glad you liked it :) and that's a very good point about the guitars!!! I loved the drumming too , especially on Sommer. Lots of folks accused the band of using a computer to fill in those double bass parts...the vocalist got rather pissed and addressed this a number of times, both live and in a studio clip. Tremendous drumming.

Well the production on the drum sound is downright weird on the album in my opinion. And he does sound a little sloppy on live footage, so I can see where they're coming from. I wouldn't have though about it being a drum computer, but definitely triggered and/or corrected during post-production. I'm sure that happens on a lot of extreme metal albums though.

Snapping out of sync drum patterns back to the tempo during the mixing process is no different to singers using autotune or rappers recording only one or two lines of their verse at a time.

You want your record to sound as good as it can possibly be, it would be weird to not use the technology available to do that, unless the band is intentionally seeking a raw sound. Either way, I've never understood why fans get so uppity about recording techniques and deem it cheating. Extreme metal in general is often very synthetic sounding on record, and often intentionally. Modelled guitar tones, triggered drums, processed vocals etc. Any record within any genre with high production values is getting tweaked in the studio, guaranteed.

Is Nargaroth back to Wagner doing everything on the records? Is it him drumming on Jahreitszen? Haven't heard that record in a while, I'll need to give it a spin today.

You might've mistaken my post as the tired old criticism of trigger use in drumming, but it wasn't meant like that. Like I said, I'm sure lots of extreme metal bands do it and I have no problem with it whatsoever. I've got no time for so called purists myself. Hell I even love a good mix of extreme metal and electronic stuff, such as on the latest (and utterly brilliant) Igorrr album.
