Music The Ultimate Metal thread.

It's strange, for me Opeth is still the best gig I've been to. They were absolutely brilliant live I thought.

I think their music is just too complex which doesn't really give them much space to go crazy on the stage. I went to see Testament around the same time I saw Opeth and the difference was immense. But it's a completely different style of music, obviously, and perhaps requires a 'less focused' playing.

Agree with that. Musically 3$BY is tight. There's even some songs that Durst doesn't totally ruin. Pollution is a pure banger.

Pollution is great. Whenever I think of how good they can sound for some reason I always go back to their performance of Sanitarium. I just wish Fred would use some death growls, to underline those heavy parts : )

Yeah they didn't move around at all, but in terms of musicianship, energy and the power coming off them when they played, they were second to none. They were tighter than a ducks arse in water, even when playing the opening tracks of Pale Communion, which they claimed to have debuted live that night.

Yeah, agree with that, I was also surprised how clean their vocals were in Eternal Rains Will Come. Mikael did say this is his most favourite line-up, every single member being an ultimate professional. Exceptional band.

If you like some nice, prog melodic stuff with decent heavy riffs, try out this band. I've never heard of them but they are fantastic. Apparently this is their debute album. Wow.

Periphery's new album is absolutely exceptional, bar maybe the first two tracks which are the weakest. Marigold, Remain Indoors and Lune are masterpieces up there with their best stuff though... And that bassline and outtro to Absolomb... Holy shit.

First single from the upcoming Dillinger Escape Plan's new album which, according to the band, may be their swansong. If that's true and you like their sound but haven't seen them live yet, attending one of their gigs should definitely be on your "to do" list.

I will also drop in here a taste from the three albums that got me through July. First one is from an old love of mine, Fates Warning, who released an astonishing album. Second is from one of the most talented guys in the whole Swedish metal scene, Mr Swanö and his newest project. The last one is from Gojira's amazing new effort.

Some really good reviews of the new Running Wild. Would be awesome if true. Some of the best heavy metal albums of all time in their catalogue in my opinion as well as some stinkers.

Metallica were my favourite band growing up and I dread to think of the hours I spent listening to them and learning the riffs - I think I'm in the minority and I quite like Load/ReLoad but everything they've done since then (almost 20 years) has been completely lacking in inspiration and they're a pale shadow of the band they once were.

New song is OK but IMO it sounds like something they could have knocked out at will in their halcyon days.

Metallica are back to writing Metallica songs.

Goes quite nicely with Green Day being back to writing Green Day songs with their last single as well.

Listening to the new Sabaton album, and I think they've actually mastered the shoutalongable (this is now a word) chorus. They're just awesome.

Just what i thought... Nothing song that sounds like Metallica of old..

I am back listening to old school death..

Exactly what I thought as well, a forgettable, by-the-numbers speed metal song. Better than a lot of the crap they put out since the 80's but that's not saying much.

I love me some old school death metal as well. Currently listening to Bolt Thrower's magnificent IVth Crusade.

New Metallica sounds a bit, I dunno... tame. Those guitars sound twangy and weak, like they forgot to do a couple of overdubs and just left in the scratch track. I always loved that wall of sound they would create with the guitar mix, which they did even right up to Reload. It just doesn't sound very heavy, despite being quite fast and percussive. There's also not a memorable riff to speak of. I also can't remember hearing Kirk do a solo that boring. The end of it just sounds like hes given up, so he just does a slide.

And those lyrics... Christ. Though, Hetfield's never been good at lyrics. Afterall, his lifestyle determines his deathstyle.

Unsurprisingly Bolt Thrower seems to have decided Kearn's death meant the end. Always one of the most uncompromising bands around. Both in their music and their overall way of doing things. Selling their merch at gigs for 10 pounds even though people are lining up to buy 5 each until they are sold out.

Sad to hear that about Bolt Thrower, but understandable. One of the few must-see bands I never saw live, I guess it'll remain that way.

I saw YOB last Sunday, one of those bands that always managed to escape my attention. They completely won me over. Fantastic stoner doom and a great live band. I'm a fan. This song was killer live:

Shame about Bolt Thrower, but it was coming. Annoyingly, their latest album is among their very best. A shame we didn't get to see what else they were capable of. Massive shame about Kearn too. Only in his 30s. That's no age to go.

Saw them on their last tour. Pure quality from the first minute. Starting off with War and Remembrance finishing with when Cannons fade iirc. They don't play often but when they do...
Apparently they did make another album after Those Once Loyal but they scrapped it because they thought it wasn't good enough.

I'd heard they did that with an album before Those Once Loyal as well. They definitely had very high standards, Pretty much the opposite of the majority of metal acts who have been around since the 80s, who will release any old contrived muck.

Not entirely metal, but really getting into the Cloud/Shadow rap scene, and come across this fella - a rapper who infuses plenty of black metal into his music

Second song from the upcoming Metallica album. I can buy into this "return to the roots" idea but, after 8 whole years, they should do better than generic riffs, uninspiring solos and childish lyrics.

I actually thought the lyrics were some of their best for ages. Also some harmonies, which we haven't heard in yonks. I thought it was a very strong track. The album looks promising so far.
