Music The Ultimate Metal thread.

I actually thought the lyrics were some of their best for ages. Also some harmonies, which we haven't heard in yonks. I thought it was a very strong track. The album looks promising so far.

After listening to it a dozen times, it sounds better but then again i don't think it's memorable. I love these guys and i always admired them for leaving their comfort zone (unlike Maiden who have matched the ACDC level of repetitiveness). I don't expect the new MoP or RtL but i want something with staying power. It's clear that it's a well structured song (intro, build up, bridge, harmonies, chorus) but, overall, it sounds like a decent heavy metal song and nothing more to me. I stand corrected about the lyrics though, this one's definitely better than Hardwired.

I like the new song a lot more than Hardwired. The parts with Rob singing as well especially, really catchy vocal melody there.

This one is better than hardwired, definitely. Really wasn't into that one. The lyrics to hardwired are hilarious. "My lifestyle determines my deathstyle" levels of hilarious.

Not feeling the production though. The guitars sound a but shrill and tinny. Sounds like James forgot to do a couple of rhythm overdubs, to get that standard wall of guitar sound.

Like them or dislike them, that's just an absurd claim. Considering their longevity, Maiden have an incredibly varied repertoire. Put on Iron Maiden, Piece of Mind, Somewhere in Time, Brave New World and Matter of Life and Death one after the other, if that's repetition other bands shouldn't even bother.

Maiden's last 4 records have been a little bloated, but the most repetitive thing about them I'd say is those annoying choruses they sometimes come out with.

"No more Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiies. No more Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiies. No more Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiies."

"The final frontieeeeeer. The final frontieeeeeer."

Even goes back to their classic stuff.

"Seventh son of a seventh son. Seventh son of a seventh soooooooooon."

I wouldn't accuse that of the records themselves though. They got shit for introducing keyboards before other "proper" metal bands even touched them.

I was referring to their post 2000 work, from Brave New World to The Book of Souls it seems like they're releasing the same album with different song titles. It's either long songs which embrace the prog structures of the late 90's-early 00's or a bit shorter ones which try to sound like their first two albums. Their work up to Seventh Son is undoubtedly the best material in the history of the genre.

Woah. I felt that each record felt different and unique in their own rights. Especially the Book of Souls and A Matter of Life and Death.

New OPETH album... a bit underwhelming. I think I was expecting something closer to Pale Communication, but Sorceress is very different compared to Heritage and Pale Communication. It's not a bad album, I guess, but there are quite a few songs which are just boring. Yeah, never thought I'd said something like that when talking about Opeth.

I was listening to the stream of the album, and nothing really stood out to me. Might be one of those that grows on you, but first impressions aren't good. I'm not even one of those who was dismayed by Mikael giving up the growls (I love Damnation, and liked the last two albums). This is all a bit dull though.

Era is basically earhole sex. But yeah i was pretty underwhelmed at first listen. I remember being a little weirded out by the first minute of the title track when the single dropped, and i'm someone that loves prog and would rank Heritage among the top Opeth records. It's definitely a grower, but as i say i loved Heritage and Pale Communion, hopefully this goes the same way. The one thing i'm not digging is the production. The mix really misses Steven Wilson's touch.

Iron Maiden and AC/DC are both shite mind.

I'm not a fan of Iron Maiden but even I know they are not shite. I'm not even going to start with AC/DC... can't comprehend how somebody could think they are shite, my mind would explode at the thought of that. AC/DC are not metal though, I guess maybe thats why you think they are shite. They are a rock band not a metal band.

Maiden are good, AC/DC are pretty bland to my ears. Depends what you want in a band. Decent, inoffensive rock 'n' roll, 3 minute songs about banging, and the same record every 3 years? They're your guys. For me it's rock for the average music fan who doesn't want to think too much.

Well if you appreciate a great riff, then AC/DC are the boys. Particularly the Bon Scott era stuff - some fantastic tunes. My personal favorites would be Bad Boy Boogie, Livewire and Riff Raff. Like I said, its old school Rock and Roll so not heavy metal so I get why people might not like it. I love it though.

As for metal - first gig I ever went to was Megadeth in the Ulster Hall in 1995 and it was great stuff.

AC/DC certainly had a time and a place, bridging that blues-driven heavy rock of the early 70s with something more urgent. They wrote a number of great songs. But then they just continued to try to re-write those songs. I could pick about 5 AC/DC songs that I'd gladly listen to and skip the rest.

AC/DC are one of those bands, for me, where I'm happy enough with a best of rather than going further into the discography.

Wasn't there an anegdote about Angus being interviewed, and the interviewer saying "you guys have recorded 12 albums and they all sound the same", to which Angus responded "wrong, we've recorded 13 albums and they all sound the same".

I was just about to type out the exact same in response to @balaks

I've got Highway to Hell and Back in Black. If for some reason i feel the need for some AC/DC, those do the job. I've never felt compelled to hear anymore really.

Fair enough, although I'd encourage you to check out Powerage and High Voltage in particular as there are some great tracks on them.

I've heard one or two off of each. I think TNT and High Voltage Rock 'n' Roll, they were alright.

Check out Riff Raff and Livewire - oh and Bad Boy Boogie - especially the live performances of Bad Boy Boogie () and Riff Raff () from the Apollo on youtube. Worth a watch.

Still a shame they don't have Bill Ward on drums. That would've completed the original line-up, nearly 50(!) years after they first formed the band together. Just think about that for a second. Plus I'm a huge fan of his, such an underrated drummer. He has that Bonhamesque ability to seem completely out of control on the drumkit yet still keep perfect timing. I would've loved to see him play The Wizard live once.

Anyone listened to the black metal band Voices? Their "London" album is really good. It's a concept album, if I understand it correctly, telling a story about a failing artist falling in love with a prostitute. The piano parts and the narration work quite well.

Hadn't heard of them and am checking them out right now. Challenging album to say the least, the music descends into pure insanity at times. I quite like it. Reminds of the likes of Deathspell Omega but more out of control.

That would have been awesome. But 3 out of 4 still pretty damn good. The replacement drummer was obviously up to the task too.

It was a really great concert. Saw them before live in Brisbane, and it was quite intimate as i was like 5-10 meters away from the band, but its not the same. A energetic crowd boosts not only the band playing, but also the whole spectacle. It was a proper goodbye and thank you to the metal gods.

The new Megadeth album is really getting under my skin and I just love some of the songs on it. That instrumental song on it is great.. Just a sad shame that Dave's voice is shot. So an instrumental it is.

New Mastodon song is out. Sounds like it could be on an album that's a mix of Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye. Last two albums grew well on me but they didn't have the same immediate impact as the first four albums. This track however is damn good and has a nice solo at the end.

I can dig it. I think Once More is their weakest effort so a return to earlier influences would work for me.

To be honest I've not listened to Mastodon for a while and missed out on their most recent tour, the first time I've ducked them since Blood Mountain was out. They'll always be special to me but I feel like I've drifted away from them a bit. Hopefully this new record will bring me back.

To be honest the new album is still better than their previous borefests. (Super Collider, Endgame, Thirteen)

New Mastodon. Catchy enough, but not really what I'm after. I'm no longer confident this album will bring me back into the fold.

Sepultura's new album Machine Messiah is great. I have to admit I haven't been much into Sepultura since Chaos AD which was like hundred years ago. This new album really is refreshing, there's almost something proggy about it (occasionally). The rest is a good mixture of metal core and trash. Some parts have a Faith No More feel to it. Cool album cover.

Anyone into tech-death metal? Mithras released an album last year called On Strange Loops, it's really worth checking out. Here's one of their best songs on the album.

"Mithras have always toyed with tying together death metal's past with a sound akin to Morbid Angel, but upgraded it with an atmospheric heavy and melodically gorgeous take on the sound that speaks more to the modern side of technical death metal."

I was at the penultimate Black Sabbath show. I was a fair way from stage, but it sounded great. Tony Iommi is so good. Really felt like I was in the presence of legends. Actual chills during War Pigs.

Man I've completely missed to get tickets for the show. I was actually supposed to be away and only very recently realized I'm not going, but it was already too late. Do you know if they would have recorded any of that??

I can't find anything about them recording any of the shows. I would have thought they'd have done it for the actual final show, given that it's...their actual final show. That's Sunday, I think, so might be worth keeping any eye out to see if there's any reports of it being filmed for a DVD.
