In Flames... What a detestable band they have become.
You would think that they could go the way Opeth did and dive into some jazzy progressive rock or something but in their case it looks like they're cashing the usual prize with every upcoming album just for sake of it.

People in Sweden still loves them, it's a band with strangely loyal fanbase despite so many weird moves after Clayman album.

I personally lost interest in them after Come Clarity but saw them live in Warsaw in 2006 anyway and they still played good old Jester Race masterpieces. Hopefully they still remember who they were and how much good they've done.

The last concert I remember fondly was back in 2005. The past several years though, they haven't touched anything older than Clayman anymore, and even that album is an exception. I could just barely stomach the shit between Clayman and Come Clarity, but after that it becomes nauseating. These days you can only dream of hearing the likes of Artifacts of the Black Rain or even Embody the Invisible live. It's a damn shame.

There's that and also there's departure of Jesper Stromblad in 2010 like it wasn't enough of their slow agony. From that point In Flames could just disappear and no one would notice.

Their recent existence is pointless, really plus Anders starts looking more and more like Jonathan Davis from Korn.

Don't get me started on his appearance. Looking at recent band pics is a painful experience. I mean for feck's sake:

:lol::nervous:

The worst thing about the whole affair is they seem to be more popular than ever and are billed higher even on decent metal festivals.

It's hard for them to go down when even a Swedish prime minister gave them some award for their ongoing promotion of Swedish music. They could release a disco record and they would get away with it with such support from government, press and probably even Vatican for their 'neutrality'.

Glad that Bjorn still managed to sustain his metal beard but Anders... gone full hipster. No point of return from that.

Here's some more power metal for you, Serious Black have released the first single from their debut album "As Daylight Breaks". Despite the fact that it's a new band their members are quite distinguished in the metal universe: Roland Grapow-Guitars (ex-Helloween), Thomen Stauch-Drums (ex-Blind Guardian), Urban Breed-vocals (ex-Tad Morose), Dominik Sebastian-Guitars (Edenbridge), Mario Lochert-Bass (ex-Visions of Atlantis).

Although the song could be described as "standard" power metal, i enjoyed it. Ofcourse i expect much better stuff on the album, Grapow is an excellent guitarist and Thomen is my favorite power metal drummer...

Not bad. But yeah, pretty standard "power" song.

any good recent stuff from Edguy? Im going next week to see Hammerfall (plus Edguy and gothhard (never heard of the latter before))

i love hammerfall so i will sing them all, but Edguy, i admit i haven't listen nothing new since "theatre of salvation"...

Edguy's three albums after Theater of Salvation are imo gems in the power metal genre, i'm talking about The Savage Poetry, Mandrake and Hellfire Club. Glam metal songs, power metal songs with hard rock influences is what you'll hear from them, They've been inconsistent since then but it may be just me listening to less and less power metal since the early 00's who thinks that.

Here's one of my favorites from the Hellfire Club

On their last album "Space Police- Defenders of the Crown" they just tried to have some fun and the result was quite refreshing imo...

As for Gotthard, it's a rock, glam band who some people love and others hate. Their lead singer died in a motorcycle accident and i haven't heard anything from their most recent album with the new vocalist. Anyways, here's what most people know them for

last night was an epic night... after 16 years i last saw them live, i have to say nothing changed much. They still rocks so much. (Oscar Dronjak's hair might be different haha)

Nice one, Hammerfall were the ones who got me into power metal so i'll always have a soft spot for them. Yeah, Oscar's hair freaks me out now

Took me ages to get into that album, but when i did i loved it.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNND SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DDIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

will go and see At the Gates tomorrow in Switzerland....cant wait!

just found out that one of the openers is the new band from Tom G. Warrior (Celtic Frost / Hellhammer)...an absolute legend.

Heres a song from his new band:

Going to see them too on Thursday, hope it's as good as back in 2008 when I last saw them. I already checked some of the setlists during this tour and it looks pretty promising. Obviously a lot of new stuff that I'm not that familiar with, but plenty of Slaughter, the awesome Raped by the Light of Christ and they even go as far back as The Red in the Sky is Ours. It's going to be a cracking night.

At The Gates and Triptykon playing in front of their home crowd? You lucky bastard! It will be an amazing live, that's for sure. Just for the record, Triptykon's second album is very high on many lists with the best metal albums of 2014 and rightly so. This was also the case with their debut album "Eparistera Daimones" a couple of years ago.

I also can't wait to see At The Gates once more in early January, their 2008 concert was an incredible experience. Unfortunately it will be just them without Triptykon or Converge with whom they were touring in the US. Crossing my fingers for a longer setlist from the Swedes :D. Of course i'm waiting to hear most of the classic stuff but i don't mind the new material either. Didn't like At War With Reality that much at first but after a few spins it really grew on me.

Saw them yesterday, pretty intense. Triptykon sounded insanely heavy live. Outside of one or two Celtic Frost songs (The Usurper!) I'm not too familiar with their stuff, but it sounded great either way. As for At the Gates, pretty good. Loads from the new one and Slaughter of the Soul of course, but also 2 songs each from the first two albums. Great night all in all.

Got myself some great new rips (bless ya, pbthal) of these albums, and through a re-listen got reminded just how powerful they are. Magnificent bastards back then.

First time i heard Puppets was like my eyes being opened. That chugging, thick wall of guitars was the heaviest thing i'd ever heard.

Cliff Burton's era for the win though 'And Justice' was also a goddamn great technical album.

Oh, still a fan of Justice, great musicianship and song arrangements, but boy, did they fecked it up with the mastering. And it's not just the non-existent bass, but guitar/drums sound a bit...wimpier? Not really sure of right word.

Could've been much more powerful I reckon, but still, even like that, awesome listen. Each song an epic.

I actually love, and i mean love, the production on Justice. It really blends well with what i think is Hetfield's best vocal performance. I can't remember who but someone once said that the "guitars buzz and the drums click rather than pound." Pretty accurate imo.

It does lack the punch of MOP but i think it complements the more technical, progressive nature.

I love Edguy. Not a huge fan of their most recent music but their early stuff is great.

Tobias Sammet's Avantasia project is quite good too.

Too right. Rasmussen did a great job on that record. It sounds huge.

Hetfield's rhythm guitar playing is unbelievable. I read recently that each track has upwards of 8 overubs of rhythm guitar, but it's so razorsharp, you don't get any weird phasing or muddiness you often hear from heavily overdrubbed records. Unreal.

Jesus, i didn't know that. That's pretty insane.

It really is, especially on the really percussive palm muted parts, like when Battery kicks in after the intro. No idea how he keeps those sounding so clean and sharp with numerous overdubs. He makes several takes sound like one huge take. Too good.

Used to listen to them years ago... Eye of the beholder cover was good.

Looking at that photo, first guy looks like he wants us to kill him and put him out of his misery of being with the band.
2nd one looks like a proper knobhead hipster enjoying this shit
3rd looks proper up himself, like he is the king of the world, proper punchable face
4th looks like he wants to kill the hipsters
5th just looks out of place, doesn't know whether to stay metal or go hipster.

As you say, painful
