Music The Ultimate Metal thread.

Sabaton are from my hometown. I remember when we were free to leave math class when they played in our school gymnasium. Now they are headlining Wacken next year which is hard for me to understand.

Thinking about going to scotland in november when Atlantean Kodex are playing. Anyone seen them live?

How did the cruise go btw? Nackskadad? :)

Can't get enough of it at the moment. Decent album overall. Hadn't listened to the Dillenger Escape Plan before. Puciano is cool singer. I dig his range.

Just booked my Opeth tickets, had no idea they'd be coming as far south as Bristol. Can't miss that.

Feel like an old man. Was one of the best concerts I´ve been to though and definitely worth it. Thinking about going to see them again at Damnation in Leeds.
Made me a happy man that they played When cannons fade as their last song. Managed to fight my way to the merch stand and get myself a couple of t-shirts too. Guy in front of me bought ten!

Video doesn't make it justice.

Discovered a new killer band this weekend at a small festival: Telepathy, an English progressive sludge metal band.

I absolutely love progressive sludge, perfect mix between highly original prog ideas, heavy crushing riffs and often beautiful soundscapes as well. These guys really get it right for me. I saw The Ocean there as well, arguably the finest the genre has to offer.

Sólstafir - Ótta

They just keep on being special.

What can you say? Just an exceptional band. Ever since Masterpiece of Bitterness they've been on a steady upward trajectory. After the brilliant Svartir Sandar and a fantastic show at Graspop this summer, my expectations for Otta couldn't have been higher, but it still blew me away. I'm seeing them again next month with another special band in support, Obsidian Kingdom, who play a mix of many different styles, including some post-metal, progressive metal and touches of black metal. Those two together, what a night that will be.

Generally I feckin hate symphonic black metal nowadays after spending years playing the stuff, getting really fed up with the complexity, then realising I don't actually like listening to it anymore.

With one exception:

Yes! Discovered Carach Angren after I got tired listening to Stormlord some years ago. Think CA's latest offering is outstanding. Their songs are intriguing and intelligently crafted.

Yeah I love how their albums flow and tell a story like a (somewhat cheesy) black metal musical. Lammendam's probably still my favourite, the new one has a couple of really poor tracks (5 & 6 I think) that I always skip.

The new At the Gates Album has arrived and its fantastic!

I will be going to see them in Switzerland and in Munich on two consecutive days in December...I cant wait!

Ace. The dude with long hair headbanging front row could have been me 14 years ago. :D

Also, something for those of you who are fans of Blind Guardian styled power metal.

Can't wait to get my hands on this one next week...

By the way, do you remember the time when Nick Holmes used to do brutal vocals? Here's a taste of the new Bloodbath album with Nick as their front man. He said in an interview that he is going to sing like that in the new Paradise Lost album.

Until then The Haunted-Exit Wounds is probably the best thing i've listened to thus far in 2014, quality thrash metal riffs, excellent songwriting and an amazing production to go with it.

Quite many rates it as the best album in 2014 but their first 'Portal Of I' record was slightly better and underrated.

Still they don't drop below certain level.

Angra just released the track "Newborn Me" that's going to be on their upcoming album "Secret Garden". It's going to be released in January 2015 and although i don't listen to power metal as much as i did i have to admit that Loureiro and Bittencourt are still one of my favorite guitar duos in metal.

wow Angra have really evolved with the years.

I used to love Angra.., Angels cry, Holy land and Fireworks were so good. Stopped listening when Andre Matos left. More than power metal, their new sound is much more progressive, closer to dream theater than to their good old Mato's days.

I could have sworn I was listening to Vision Divine for a second. Fabio Leone is everywhere nowadays it seems. That was rather....weak for being Angra, unfortunately. Long way off the form of their last three albums.

Speaking of bringing back old Gods, Daniel Heiman is back on Harmony's latest single:

Not Lost Horizon standard (no shit!) but it's nice to seem him back on the metal scene rather than fecking about outside of it.

So hyped.

Listening to that Angra song, and I quite like it. That surprises me as I've never really been able to get into Rhapsody, barring Magic of the Wizard's Dream because dammit it's Christopher Lee. I never really managed to get into older Angra either, despite Andre Matos clearly being a fantastic vocalist (his performance on their cover of Wuthering Heights is insane and a little bit hilarious).

I do quite like Symfonia though, in terms of Andre Matos bands.

For over-the-top cheesy power metal, I love a bit of Aquaria.
