Music The Ultimate Metal thread.

I actually liked the albums with Annette :(.

Obviously Floor is miles better, so I'm not complaining, but I feel they're somewhat overlooked. Not going to listen to that song, because I want to listen to the whole album for the first time. Well, except for that song they released a video for, but that's it dammit.

Oh alright, I'll listen to that song.

More Finland

Never get more excited than when Moonsorrow have a new album in production. Could never tired of hearing Ville Sorvali die in another song.

Wintersun play in my hometown this summer.

Yes! Skull is a total ripper of an album.

I'm not too into 80's thrash bar Slayer and Metallica, but there's some totally belting neo-thrash around these days.

Power Trip are my favourite. Their LP totally rips

Yeah, you can only talk about good thrash with the word "rip", by the way. "Shred" is acceptable too, I guess.

 Tear is another good one i find.

That's not bad at all. Listened to 3 off Manifest Decimation, Hammer of Doubt is pretty damn rip shredding. Vocals remind me a bit of early venom, but not so much it becomes annoying.

german black metal - without any dodgy shit that unfortunately comes with it so often these days.

They're playing at a very small venue in my city this Saturday, had never heard of them before. Some coincidence! Together with 3 other decent-to-very-good sounding bands for just €13. Can't complain.

Go and see them.

If you are not some wacky true black metal purist youre gonna like it!

and have an eye on the drummer....what a machine!

I listen to plenty of metal that has progressive, sludge, post-rock and hardcore infuences, so I'm far from a purist. ;) And being a drummer myself, it goes without saying I pay special attention to the drums!

The main act that evening will be Downfall of Gaia, best described as sludgy post-black metal. I love that shit.

So I saw them yesterday. feck me that was intense. Absolutely relentless. Fantastic sound live as well, every note was crystal clear. Loved it.

Since those pesky Somalian terrorists just made my university cancel our work trip to Kenya, I am able to go to the Blind Guardian concert in Antwerp after all next week! Black clouds and silver linings and all that...

Was gonna go Sonisphere again. That got nipped in the bud. Maybe Download but that's about it. :(

Don't think I'm doing any festivals this year. Got Blind Guardian in about a week, and I'm going to Holland in September to see "Ayreon*" so I think that may do me. Although I am tempted by the idea of Nightwish in London in Wembley.

*For those not familiar, echnically Ayreon is Arjen Lucassen and others, and he's not actually going to be performing at the show (he's going to be there). Basically, he's the writer and main musician, and then he gets in a load of guest singers to do these concept albums. The show I'm going to is based on the album The Human Equation, and features the majority of the original "cast." I believe it's meant to be a theater performance as much as a concert. James LaBrie and Eric Clayton are both going to be there, and although they couldn't get Devin Townsend, they've managed to get Mike Mills of Toehider, who has an absolutely ridiculous range.

I'm a tad hyped.

I've got no friends who are into metal so unless i go on my own, i'm not going to anything.

Sucks to be me.

I have tickets to Wacken. I'm not sure I can go however. Party San would be nice. feck, any metal festival in Germany guarantees a great time.

What are caftards doing for festivals this year.

Hitting up Groezrock in May, possibly Hevy fest in August as well.

Graspop as usual.
Dour which has many different genres including hip hop, but it's also got the likes of Solstafir, Gojira and Electric Wizard. That's me sold.
Dunk Festival in May, which has lots of post-rock and -metal like Caspian and The Ocean.
One festival I really want to do this year is Motocultor in France, with an epic line-up so far including bands like Agalloch, Alcest, Death, Carcass, The Ocean, Solstafir, etc.
And to close off the summer festival season I hope to go to Incubate in Tilburg again, which is different from a normal festival in that it doesn't have a closed festival ground but is just spread all across the city. Always plenty of great stuff to discover, from indie to post-rock to drone to even black metal. But it's looking difficult with some nasty work related shit planned in the same week. Fingers crossed.

No Wacken for a change, I've fecking had it with their bullshit ticketting strategy (or complete lack thereof). Selling out when I've barely got home from the previous edition and with just a handful of bands announced. It's been going downhill for a while now anyway, shite festival last year. Shame I won't get to see Cryptopsy though.

So far only this festival on my list:

Might go to the Lokerse Feesten metal day as well, but the line up doesn't really seem that attractive.

I'll just leave this here...

Bank holiday weekend 3am Strapping sesh!

Wow, this was great. Very, very impressed by their live performance. One of those bands that sound even much better live than their studio work. And the audience was great as well (as is always the case with Blind Guardian I hear).

If they're every performing somewhere in your area, go to see them. You won't regret it.

^Going to see them tonight in London. "Hyped" doesn't come close.

I was there too, great stuff. The first half had too many newer songs that I don't really know, but they really stepped it up towards the end. From the moment they came back with War of Wrath and Into the Storm it was a fantastic ride to the end, with Sacred, Valhalla, The Bard Song and Mirror Mirror. I was there the previous time they played in Antwerp in 2006, similar reaction from the audience then during Valhalla and The Bard Song. The crowd continuing to sing Valhalla long after the song has ended is a staple of Blind Guardian shows. But having seen plenty of shows in different countries, I always feel bands get the best reactions on Flemish soil. Without trying to sound too chauvinistic. :D

feck, i can just imagine the epicness of Valhalla live. I think i need to try and sort seeing Blind Guardian. Even if i have to go on my fecking own!

Valhalla is amazing live. Bard's Song is also amazing live. Our big sing-along song turned out to be Last Candle though, the "somebody's out there" part.

I need to get my hands on Orphaned Land's stuff now.

Yeah that was pretty successful in Antwerp as well. Hansi tried to say something during that part but sort of gave up after the crowd kept repeating it. I suspect he does that at every show though. :D Nothing like Valhalla though, which was still sung at the beer counter after the show was over.

All Hail Joey!

I love to think he is somewhere nice having a good time with Chuck, DIO and every one of my rock heroes.

14 years already... :(

ps. got me tickets for Judas Priest/Motorhead :)

Don't forget Ocean Machine ;)

Devin is a genius.
Oh yes. On emotional level this album clicks almost instantly.

He's now on to writing a symphony or something like that with pace of releasing almost two albums a year. The guy lives for the brilliant shit.

I actually have trouble keeping up, he's one of the most prolific musicians out there.
